I was looking on eBay and found a company called Hiper who sells Xenon bulbs. They have the size that fits the 1995+ Explorer fog lights, H3. Has anyone ever bought a Hiper bulb? I am curious because I'd like my fogs to have a somewhat match to the PIAA 9007 headlights.

I was thinking about getting their Xenon 9007s. I dunno about the brand though, it might be crap. BTW, 95+ fogs are not H3, at least my factory lights aren't. They're some weird bulb that I can't remember. I'm loads of help, aren't I?

I see that brand on ebay all the time... I've never seen them in any stores... I'm always concerned about products that compare themselves to other products to make a sale, for example, "Like PIAA!" Sometimes there OK, sometimes theres huge difference...

I could have sworn in the manual it has fog light replacement is H3. Let me run to my car and look at the book. I'll let you know in five minutes. :)

(In my best impression of a history teacher.)

If I may direct your attention to page 398 in the Owners Manaul under replacement lights, it has fog light trade number "H3" listed. Not too long ago I replaced a burnt out fog light, but I took the bad bulb to the auto parts store and had them get me what I needed while I picked up some Meguiars Quick Detail spray. Maybe I should have looked myself... Anyways, any further insight on this is appreciated guys.

I think the manual is wrong. Someone else on this board had the same problem. I know when I replaced mine, it wasn't H3. When you replaced yours, did the bulb have a big wire harness type connector at the back, or just one wire coming off the bulb? The latter is H3, the former is some other bulb.

I didn't like my stock fogs anyway, so I got some aftermarket ones, and they do use H3 ;)

I also wanted to replace my foglight bulbs(but with PIAA)
the owners manual for the 2000XLT says the bulb is an 899.
I pulled a bulb after not being able to find an 899 bulb anyplace on the web...The bulb is an Osram 55W. H1
AutoBulbDepot.Com says the bulb for the Explorer fog is an H3...but (it's not) they sell the H1 PIAA>>part #PA11455

PIAA bulb-H1 55=100w XTRA clear
list25.67
net23.00ea.
The H1 goes into the back of a plastic mount similar to the 9000 series bulbs, that twists into the back of the foglamp.....can you just install a 9005 bulb??

NOMI, I do too want to replace the 899 bulbs. I have email autobulbdepot.com and got a replay back to check with them in 4 weeks. So I guess they are getting them soon. They also mention to me what the H1, but its definatey different style. I never heard of a 9005 bulb.

Xplor..
If you go to Autobulbdepot.com>products>PIAA
and scroll down you will see the 9005 and 9006 bulbs, below those you will see the H1...The H1(Ford#899) sticks into the back of a right angle mount just like the 9005-6....

Well I have a 1996 Explorer. What fog light bulb do I need? I would like to use PIAA lights if possible. I didn't know they offered a white style like the 9007 headlamps. Thanks guys.

NOMI, that PIAA bulb will produce 100w? I would like to look into for a ion crystal bulb. So I can get that yellow beam light when it is foggy. If they doin't then 'll probably get that H1.

The stock fogs are 899's. Autostock.com carries the Xenon brand, but no matter the manufacturer, the 899's are still only 38 watt bulbs. I don't really know if the H1's are the same thing, but I talked w/ autostock, and they told me about Ford's manual being wrong, and actually sent me some Xenon 899's. They're not much different than stock. I think I may call them and see if the 899's are the same plug design as the H1's. Even if the plugs are the same, I'd think they're completely different bulbs. If so, there will be a problem, especially if you're thinking of putting any thing higher than a 55 watt bulb in there. Good luck,

The 893's I bought worked fine since I couldn't find 899's. Now my fog lamps match my bright white headlamps.

Just posted this reply to another post:

The factory bulbs are 899's. There are a few posts regarding these. I've been looking for replacement bulbs. There are no good 899's, They're only 27 or 35 watts. I just saw some 885's at pepboys that look the same, but are 50 watts. They only had one left, so I got it and pluged it in. It looked quite a bit brighter in the day lite. I haven't had the chance to test it at nite, but I wanna get a match before I compare. I'm also gonna start looking for some "super" 885's or something that may be more toward the PIAA super whites.

BTW the H1 bulb, if it is what some others have said , will not replace the 899. The 899 is a straight connector, not at a right angle. I saw a whole bunch of replacement bulbs at pep boys from 7 to 55 watts. Some straight, some right angle, all with the same plug pattern. I guess any of 'em will work. Just watch the wattage (don't wanna go too high).

I see you use Whelen Strobes. Vol FF? Do you have any pictures of how it looks? I am very curious. I always imagined an Explorer looking good with a blue over bar on the front roof, some strobe headlights, some hidden blue lights in the grille, and some strobe rear lights (inside the break/parking light covers).

Just my mind wandering :)

I have a '99 explorer. I have the standard round factory fog lights. When you remove the bulb assembly, there is a plastic right angle base and the bulb. The bulb can be easily removed by pulling. Although Ford calls it an 899, the actual bulb is an OSRAM H1 at 55 watts. If you look up 1999 and up Explorer on autobulbdepot.com they show this. They sell a PIAA H1 replacement with Xtra technology, but it does not have the super white technology. They also sell a Hiper bulb that runs at 80 watts and has super white color.
I bought a pair of the Hiper bulbs and they work very well and are direct replacements. They match perfectly in light intensity and color to my PIAA 9007 super white main headlights.
