View Full Version : FROADER's backyard fix-up

FROADER
12-31-2007, 05:28 PM
I got a nice new 30" dual burner grill and I want to build an island for it. I want it to have enough room for the bbq a small fridge and a counter/bar big enough for 3 chairs/stools.

http://www.explorerforum.com/photopost/data/3420/medium/IMG_3476.jpg

It will have to be on the smaller side, since I don't have that much room in the backyard. I've been looking on the webernet for ideas and I like the looks of these.

http://www.hottubdepot.net/images/grills/chef300.jpg

http://www.lagrillislands.com/images/island2-sml.jpg

I will be running propane for a while until I can hook it up to the CNG from the house, which is right next to the chimney (between the slider and chimney in the pic below).

I think I would want it right in front of the chimney, but I'm not exactly sure yet.

http://www.explorerforum.com/photopost/data/3420/medium/IMG_3473.jpg

http://www.explorerforum.com/photopost/data/3420/medium/IMG_3475.jpg

Here is my first idea, but I'm not sure if I want to have to walk all the way around it to get to the Q.

Any help/ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Flip it left to right so that you could walk out from your slider straight into the grilling area. Plus, if you had guests at the table, you'd be facing them. I like it, like the detail on your patio cover also.

...i just got back from installing security cams, emergency call...anyways, let me know what day i can come by, including tomorrow, take a peak and discuss it..;)

Since his CNG connection is between the sliding doors and the chimney, his diagram may be the best solution. Unless he wants to run a gas line at the bottom of the chimney to connect it on the other side, which could be a pretty big hassle, not to mention pretty unsightly.

Have you thought about doing a two section set up, Froader? BBQ on one side (say a "short end") and the angled counter with chairs, refrig on the other? Kind of like a short I on one side and a backwards L on the other? :dunno:

(I can't post pictures or I would draw it out for you.)

How about something similar to this?

http://www.custombuiltoutdoorkitchens.com/artwork2007/kitchens-web-2007/Lew-web-2007/Completed/Lew-0052.jpg

With the BBQ sitting against the chimney, I think that would look nice!

(Keep in mind I said something SIMILAR to that. It doesn't have to be that big but it would solve the problem of where you walk in to the BBQ area.)

Tomorrow would be good. I'll give you a call when I wake up, since I know you get up at ungodly hours. :p:

I hadn't and that's a great idea. I'll draw something up using that idea.

Sojourner i like that idea.

I also thing the entrance would be better on the door side because you will be bringing stuff in and out the door but you may have it set up better for guest now.

FROADER
12-31-2007, 08:00 PM
Yeah, the only problem with reversing wht I have now, is there wouldn't be any room for the person to pull the chair out at the table.

I like the two part idea, a lot.

There is a plug inside right next to the CNG for the fireplace. My electrician buddy siad we could just run it from that for the outside.

That would be great if you could get that from your buddy Ted.

I can't really tell from the pictures but is patio cover solid? If you put the BBQ under it are you concerned about smoke build up under the cover? Maybe some residue on the bottom? I'm not much of a cook but I know how smoky I can make the kitchen when I burn something. Might not be an issue though. Take lots of pictures of how you build everything, cause I will have to copy it in a year or two in my backyard.

Tbars4
01-03-2008, 08:46 PM
...the cover is not solid...it is open 2x4 pvc...if the bar b q is just off the edge of the cover it shouldn't be a problem...if the bar b q is under the cover, it will require a hood and vent per fire code...;)

...and if i ever find a girl who doesn't think the smoke detector is, the food is ready bell, i would be set...;)

Like so:

Tbars4
01-03-2008, 09:40 PM
...thats cool too...kinda what i was thinking with the first design...i liked how it had a nice contour shape and swing it around to the radius, you still have spacious room for the stools on the raised are but they are still under the cover and inside the post...

...btw, i got a couple pics of a previous bbq i'll post...it's real simple just to show set up, appliance locations...

Well there was a change in plans for the whole backyard, which changed the bbq island idea. I ended up getting a pre-fabbed 3 piece deal. I got a pretty good price on it, and it fits perfectly where it is.

5 burner including Infra-red and a griddle. It has a rotisserie set-up which I will probably never use so it's not installed right now. The fridge isn't stocked yet with the goods and the propane tank sits in the right side behind the stainless door there. It's amazing the difference a good bbq makes compared to the $120 Charlbroiler.

Made some progress on this yesterday. I had an electrician buddy, Steve, come over and help out getting power to the area that I want the water feature (between the two deck pieces that tbars4 built). Things tend to go slow when you've known the electrician for 25 years, hence the night pics. :) On with the pics.

We cut the cement to get the conduit from the house to the spot that tbars left it to hook up to. Enough room to get a water pipe in there also.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x75/HB_Tiki/Backyard%20Crash/IMG_2928.jpg

Then I dug a trench to get to the wall so we could mount the box. (Ted, that stuff was waaaay softer than when you were here. :)

The box will be hidden when all said and done with this project.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x75/HB_Tiki/Backyard%20Crash/IMG_2934.jpg

Was a pretty interesting wire pull with 3 90° and 2 45° turns. We used Steve's 100' fish tape.

Wired up a GFCI where the existing plug was.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x75/HB_Tiki/Backyard%20Crash/IMG_2939.jpg

Steve asked if I wanted the water feature to be on a switch, so I wouldn't have to crawl behind it and plug it in each time to turn it on. Of course I said, "Shit yes!"

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x75/HB_Tiki/Backyard%20Crash/IMG_2940.jpg

Weather proof switch cover. (looks like I have something important to turn on and off). I may paint that red part to black or white.

So this went from the right side of the pic behind the bbq to the left side of the pic to the tiki. Don't mind the smoke in the sky. The Corona and Chino fire's smoke made it all the way here with the Santa Ana winds.

We cut the cement to get the conduit from the house to the spot that tbars left it to hook up to. Enough room to get a water pipe in there also.

A built-in bong??? :notworthy :smokinfro
