In front of the spare? The spare is under the truck in my '04. Is your '03 really different?

Anyway, the room under the seats is pretty limited, and even if you could put some kind of box under there you wouldn't be able to lay your seats down anymore. I would just put a box in the rear cargo area. If you are that worried about space, you might look into a Stealthbox or something similar.

You will get the best sound if they are in the far back, in the cargo area

Ha! I have one 10" in the cargo, and one 8" under the rear seats... sweet! However, it does need to be in a rather flat box to accommodate the speaker...
