View Full Version : GE To Pull Plug On Appliances
Tbars4 05-18-2008, 11:08 AM ...This is big news in the construction industry as GE is a good, solid long term appliance manuf. co....I generally refer their products as they are a good, median priced product which keeps up with current trends..
..The best thing about the GE appliances are they don't require service, but if they ever do, they have a great 24hr service that will send a truck to your door with a repairman, with any part needed already in his truck...
...They are pulling the plug on the Appliance Division...:(

Donner 05-18-2008, 12:26 PM That's a good thing... It will allow another corporation the ability to focus on the appliance division as a sole unit. GE has their hands in everything right now, and they need to spin off this unit. It's possible the appliance division could function on its own, and do very well w/o GE management.
Tbars4 05-18-2008, 01:55 PM ...I'm not in agreement...I don't like when there is a good quality product that gets replaced, bought out, or removed...I have seen this over the years and in today's modern world of greed, this only means it will be bought as a "for profit only" biz and will fail as the product will suffer...
..Also, I would rather see more companies with their hands in everything than a few, monopolizing and controlling any market...It makes for better competitive markets and leads to a consumer trust in the products...It also makes for a better economy whith the product being good, at a good price, rather than just being cheap and mass produced...
...G.E. was going under a few years back until one man brought them back...He did a great job to promote consumer interest and save the company...He later moved over to take control of Home Depot and he only did the wrong things with that company...I think he really lost his mind then but, I believe he was compensated with the highest record payoff of any CEO in history when he left...:dunno:
Donner 05-18-2008, 01:58 PM I say Home Depot or Lowes will pick it up... Or *gulp* Wal-Mart
Tbars4 05-18-2008, 02:04 PM ..One of the things he installed at Home Depot is to have products made exclusively for H.D. at a cheaper quality...That's why when you try to price match, the scew's don't match..;)
...Home Depot does sell G.E. appliances as a staple though..But I am not impressed with the other appliance companies...
..I might add, I do appliance installs on all my job's and other peoples job's...G.E. is preferred, but I also install from Kitchenaid to Viking...

Not quite correct. First off, GE has not been close to "Going Under". GE's CEO for 20 years ('81 to '01) was "Neutron" Jack Welch. Upon his retirement, Jeffrey Immelt was named as the CEO and is still running the company. The person you are talking about is Robert Nardelli, and Immelt was chosen over him to run GE. Nardelli went to Home Depot and made a mess out of it.
GE thrives upon a culture of growth. Appliances are not a growth industry. This may be why GE is spinning it off.
Tbars4 05-18-2008, 02:20 PM ...Thanks for the correction and you are correct...I have met Nardelli twice out here on H.D. business...I'm not 100% on the not going under part but, I will concede as your point of a growth company makes sense...
..The problem when companies do this though, is no consumer confidence...The next thing you know they will quit making GE light bulbs..
BrooklynBay 05-18-2008, 02:30 PM Every manufacturer has a good & bad product. In my experience repairing appliances, the Amana/Maytag refrigerators have a poor construction with fragile shelf clips, bins, and other plastic components. The compressors fail after 2 years, but their replacement parts seem to hold up (even though they are suppose to be the same exact part which new appliances come with). The GE/Whirlpool washing machines have defective clutch mechanisms, hood ajar cut off switches for the spin cycle, and the new temperature controls keep cycling, then eventually only let either cold or hot water enter the machine, but never let them mix. Caloric was known for their ignitors blowing internal fuses or completely blowing out the ignitiors during their self cleaning cycle. So this shows that every company has a strong, and weak side.
JDraper 05-18-2008, 02:33 PM GE has already sold off it's plastics business and a couple other business's and re-structured quite a few others in order to get back to good growth. If you take a look at GE stock over the last few years it's been close to flat because the street sees GE as being "Too Big and spread out".
I'm positive on the GE not going under statement. Trust me :). I know. It's had it's ups and downs, but has always been a blue chip company and it is the longest listed Dow Jones company on record.
Tbars4 05-18-2008, 02:38 PM ..BB, I do believe this to be true also...But, when it comes to dishwashers, ovens, ranges, cooktops, convection ovens, and microwaves for the home, they are a very good product with a good service management team if needed...Or, they were..:(
..Jdraper, Where do you see the company headed??? What new markets???
JDraper 05-18-2008, 02:41 PM I'll let you do your own research on that. I would rather just politely duck that question because of what I do for a living.;)
Tbars4 05-18-2008, 02:51 PM ..Ew, pm me some info on what you do...:D
...I guess it doesn't have anything to do with Mack truck parts, lol..
Donner 05-18-2008, 08:38 PM More media, more medical research technology - they will be the first to beam someone up :)
Tbars4 05-18-2008, 08:42 PM ...Glad to see you made it home.....
..But I wonder what kitchen appliances they will have when they beam you up, and don't say a replicator made by Kitchenaid...:p:
Donner 05-18-2008, 08:55 PM Home :) nice place! Actually, I think they are going to be the company that finds and detects illness before it has a chance to do harm. And GE will focus on bloodless surgical procedures... (and then they will be called a monopoly and broken up)
BrooklynBay 05-18-2008, 09:06 PM Actually it will be IBM, the California Institute of Technology, and the Australian National University which will be the pioneers of quantum teleportation:

Black92LX 05-19-2008, 03:05 AM GE seems to be in some troubles recently they are attempting to cut costs left and right.
They recently threatened to stop using UPS if they didn't cut down on fuel surcharges.
UPS said we can't and GE said they were saddened they would have to use a different carrier.
UPS quickly responded that they would too be sad that they would then have to have all their future aircraft turbines be made by Rolls Royce instead of GE.
Guess what GE is still using UPS as their carrier.
Tbars4 05-31-2008, 10:21 PM ...They just started running commercials out here for Electrolux appliances, sold at Lowe's...
...Here is a link to the Electrolux site...
