View Full Version : How to: Wheel, Tire, and Lift Sizes...

Tbars4
05-31-2008, 06:40 PM
...This is a compilation of info and links I have found very useful on this site, including items I have learned over the years...Just my favorite links to the noted subject's...:D

...The wheel size does not make the tire rub...The tire and backspacing cause/eliminate this...;)

...The preferred size wheel for the Explorer and Ranger is, 15"x8" 5-4.5 with 3.75 Backspacing...You can fit up to a 12.50" wide tire on this wheel..

...If you look at the tire size and lift charts here, they will give you the correct amount of lift needed for minimal, to no rubbing with the stock size wheels,(15"-16" tall)...A 15x10 wheel basically will give you a deeper dished wheel and usually, the back spacing size they come with will cause the tire to rub more on your front fenders...

...For offroading, it is more likely to walk a tire off of a 15x10 wheel than it is a 15x8 wheel...Also, the 15x10 wheel is not protected from rocks and such, as it is now closer to the outer edge of the tire...:D

I want to run 33x12.5x15 on 10" wheels or settle for 32x11.5x15 on 8" wheels (procomp M/T's) even if I need wheel spacers.. Want 3" suspension lift and cut out flares (any recomendations from other trucks since we are limited) I don't mind cutting up the body. I also have rears out of a ' 76 bronco. Should I use them with coils up front or stick with the TTB in my 92 for a better ride. The 44 up front and 9" rear would be great and srtonger but not sure if they would be too narrow or not. This is my first small 4 wheeler any help with engine mods, 4.0, and susp. would be great with gas at $4.26 here the big rigs are out. Was going to go with the jeep cherokee 4 dr but I am a ford/mazda man at heart. Thank you for any help and input. The tranny will be pulled soon as it is now junk (thats how I got the truck for free) and the body and inside are in awesome shape (hopefully not for long)...Thanks

I have been searching this sight for several days and cannot find what I am loooking for and cannot get anywhere on why people do things. I have many good parts use of a good junkyard and was looking for a little help as the project starts soon. I might have been better off with a jeep with all the parts I have. I was just looking for a little help thats all and thought an explorer would be neat and I don't mind cutting the wheel wells out but can't find flares to cover the tires. I remember a time when 4 wheelers where happy to share info now it seems like things are kept silent. I will try yhr links you gave me but still have found nothing but will keep looking. Thank you for your time..

On the 01 Sport, the rear wheels are tucked in further than the front. I decided against doing spacers for the rear. Since the vehicle is in 2wd 99% of the time, would it affect anything (4x4) if the rear rim were wider? Or, better question: Help? :D

Tbars4
04-01-2009, 11:11 PM
...I don't know a lot about your set up on the '01...What is the back spacing on your wheels???...What size tires are on them???...Etc...:dunno:

...The one thing I would worry about is the tire coming up to meet the rear fender...You could receive damage from just going around sharp corners if you don't have enough clearance and your tire can not tuck up, into the wheel well...This is not to mention when you do go off road...

Donner
04-02-2009, 12:40 AM
Ah! I didn't think about that... thank you! The tires/wheels are 265/70/16. I have no clue about the backspacing... Sounds like it's best left as is.
