tk2000 12-02-2007, 03:24 PM Hello all, 40 something Michigan explorer fan here. I've spent the better part of my last two nights off looking through this great site. Got me so worked up I replaced a badly needed lower ball joint and a ECT sensor on my xlt today. I'm learning tons of things from this. Think I'm in love.:)

BrooklynBay 12-04-2007, 09:47 AM Welcome to this forum! How do you like it so far?
powderfool 12-04-2007, 05:49 PM I am a newbie on the site. I have been 'wheeling for years. My first 4x4 was a '66 International Scout that I drove for over 200K miles. I have had many vehicles since, all with both axles powered. I now have a 2002 Explorer XLT with 97K miles and all stock. I am interested in performance enhancements and mileage improvment. I don't 4 wheel off road much anymore, but I do put in 10k miles per year driving to the ski slopes at Lake Tahoe. I see that there is much valuable info in this site and will be using it alot.
Thanks for the informative and fun forum.
Randy

contractor 12-05-2007, 04:14 PM Hi y'all,
I have been mostly a Chevy fan however after I bought a '92 Ranger several years ago for a winter beater it never failed me and was such a great ride I decided to upgrade to a '99 XLS V6. I love this vehicle and with yet another winter setting in here in warm and sunny Canada (insert sarcasm here) I'm sure glad to be able to have access to the great information here. My baby needs some work but I'm not giving up on her yet :)
I'm going to get rid of a Chev & buy another newer explorer with a V8 for the wife ;) I'm still keeping my 'vette though.. please don't hate me :P
Anyways, there's the intro. Great to be on board!

Oubre 12-06-2007, 06:21 PM Hi All,
Just joined the forum after deciding to keep my 1995 rwd Explorer.
Im looking for help on finding a nice suspension lift kit.
Glen4X4 12-06-2007, 06:45 PM Welcome To The Forum! Glad your keeping it, you planning to take it off road is that the reason for the lift or just for looks? Cuz if your doing it for offroading you should maybe consider tradin it for a 4X4 explorer or do a SAS and transmission change and convert it to a 4X4. Try doing a search for Suspension lift in this forum there has been many discussions on them. If you do a Torsion twist and an add-a-leaf you could gain somewhere around 2-2 1/2 inches
BrooklynBay 12-06-2007, 09:02 PM Welcome to this forum! Check the forum on suspension systems. Many people here have lifts.
STEWARTW 12-06-2007, 10:50 PM I'm from north idaho, I purchased a 1993 explorer sport for my daughter. It is quite a fixer upper. I have had a lot of experience with doing maintenance on older ford 4wd and newer ford 4wd and thought I might have dodged having to face the learning curve on the OBDI but no such luck. Anyway I like this web site and find it very helpful.

Well, seeing that I have a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0 V8 with 190k miles, this seems to be the place to be. Everything has been great with the exception of a squeal in the engine compartment. Im thinking pulley, so we are replacing a pulley today. If that does not fix it, I will be back!
Thanks

SirWil 12-08-2007, 01:38 PM Hello. I have a 92x 4x2 4.0 v6 5sp 210,000 miles stock. I drive it everyday for work. Runs real good. It is in good shape too. I have a really bad oil leak. It needs a qt about every 200+ miles. It started out at about 1000 miles/qt. Then droped to 500 for while. And now its about every other day I put in a qt of oil. ANywho. found the site just by searching on Google. I have been checking it for a while for help and finally joined up. Thanks for the help.

Randy_the_Hack 12-09-2007, 02:16 PM Hi all!
I'm a new member - joined to try to find some mpg improvements for my Dad's '05 Explorer. I know so little about this truck other than it's gold.
I spend most of my time online hanging around at The Diesel Place (http://www.dieselplace.com), where I play with my '04.5 Duramax/Allison powered Chevy Silverado. Messing around with my truck, I've been able to boost hp by about 100-110 hp and increase highway mileage from 17.5 to 22.5 mpg. My goal is 25 mpg, and I'm pretty sure I can get there - pretty easily, in fact. So, I recognize the value/benefit of this type of 'net resource, and the potential gains available from tinkering with your truck.
I've read out here that a couple of guys are up around/above 30 mpg with their Explorers. That's about 2x my Dad's current mpg's; needless to say, if we could get near that, he'd be one happy camper.
If y'all have any pointers, tips, or ideas, in the words of Ross Perot, "I'm all ears!" :D

DogDays 12-09-2007, 02:37 PM Hi Guy's
Just got s a used 04 Explorer Limited 4X4 yesterday. Mileage was pretty good for 4 yrs old, less than 40,000. Traded in an 02 Chev Silverado Duramax. The Explorer will be used to mainly drive back and forth to work and pull the wife's small travel trailer to horse shows. We have an 08 Super Duty SRW 350 for hauling the horse trailer.
This is my first Explorer and I will probably have more than a few questions. The Explorer was the only used one on the lot with a V8 that could pull the trailer and it had all the beeps and whistles so why not. The wife likes the heated leather seats already.
See ya Around.

lambdebois 12-09-2007, 09:45 PM Just taking the time to introduce myself. My name is John. Currently project is a uncut 74 bronco ranger. Have had a 91 4.0l pushrod, a 98 5.0l, and a 00 4.0l sohc explorers in the past. I wish I had kept my 5.0l explorer to use the 4r70w and engine in the bronco but at the time I had no idea it would be of use to me and sold it. Oh well. Maybe I'll find a good deal on one here in the future. Love to wheel, camp, and fish in my spare time.
Currently don't have an explorer...I couldn't justify getting one after they went to their IRS and I ended up getting a 06 v-8 4runner to replace my 98 v-8 explorer as a daily driver.

airbear406 12-12-2007, 11:26 AM Hello fellow explorer's !
New to the forum and hope some of you "experienced" mechanics can help solve a few mystery problems I have with my 93 Eddie Bauer 4.0 2wd.
Cold start - rough idle, shuts off, restart, same result unless you pump accelerator and hold idle over 1200 rpm. Once engine warms up, seems to run ok. Changed IAC valve, seemed ok for a day or two, then back to same problem. also have residue comes out tailpipe when engine starts, black condensation only during engine start. no smoke. Also, checkengine comes on sometimes immediately, sometimes after 3 or 4 miles. Drives and runs fine on hwy at 70 mph. Has 99000 miles. Any ideas ?

I had to buy my wife a newer X but I got her old one (95 XLT). I have been looking at lifting it and really like the SAS. I looked at the lift that Cory did for Josh but can't seem to get to all the pics. This won't be a hard core off-road machine but in will get used. Any help and/or pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanx and I'll be typing at U later

thejackmfk 12-17-2007, 12:50 AM im a new member and would like to start off by saying hello, my problem is i have a 89 ford ranger 2.3 dual spark engine that broke a piston and shot a rod through the oil pan(and yes it is posible) now i have found a a replacement motor for about 300- 350 bucks but im pretty sure that it is not dual spark and i dont want to spend a whole lot of money rewiring or looking for a new comp will anyone tell me if this will work
BrooklynBay 12-17-2007, 09:47 AM Welcome to this forum! What year is that other motor from?
thejackmfk 12-17-2007, 05:28 PM My truck is 1989, the donor motor is out of a mustang i do not know what year all i know is it has around 125k miles on it and at about 105k it had a new reworked head with a 5 angle valve job also it said something about it bieng a e8 block all i can tell from the pics is it is a 2.3 with the intake and exhaust in the same place as mine but it has only one distributor with 4 wires. i belive this will be my biggest problem, i belive i can take the wires going into my 1st ignition coil pack and re soder them to work wih a distributor cap but i am not completely certain i also need to know if i need some different 02 sensors , also if my throttle body will work, thank all in advance

Nosmo 12-21-2007, 07:08 AM HI, I am Nosmo, the 's' is pronounced with a hard 'z' sound as the first 's' is in Cosmos.
I found this site with Google searching for Ford Explorer Troubleshooting.
I have two Explorers, on is a 94 XLT with a 5 speed standard trans and manual hubs (4whl drive, 4 doors), and the other is a '00 Eddie Baur (sp?) model with the SOHC engine.
This '00 is the one I need help with at the moment and I will search some the forum for the symptoms and see what shows up.
Thanks for being here and I hope to gain a lot and help where I can as I do most of my own work on both these Explorers.
Later,
Nosmo

Thanks for being part of this info sharing and have a great holiday!!

scrapper 12-23-2007, 05:38 PM Hi, I have a 94 ranger 2 wheel drive. I would like to install factory air and cruise control, maybe change the rear end to 373 gears for towing. I work in a scrap yard and have a little luck finding parts for the upgrades I'm interested in doing. I think I have all the parts for the cruise control. May need help finding the best way to istall it. I will be hanging out here alot just to find out what parts I can use from any number of cars, trucks, explorers. Thanks for the help.
BrooklynBay 12-23-2007, 08:10 PM Welcome to this forum! You will be a very liked, and vaulable member of this forum if you work in a scrap yard. Take a look at the parts wanted section, and you will see the load of requests on a daily basis.
takemetoyurledr 12-23-2007, 08:24 PM Hey, I have a '99 explorer Sport and am looking to do a lot of upgrading. Anyone know where the nearest scrap yard is to Annapolis MD where i might have some luck finding parts?

Frank Richards 12-25-2007, 12:08 AM Hi all you good people.. I subscribed to this forum some time ago to solve some problems with my daughter's 96 2wd xlt. With the help from the experts on this forum, my problem resolutions were so much easier. My other daughter now has a 98 4wd xlt. Now some problems have come up at 112kmi with the transmission and/or the transfer case. Since I've just towed it into my driveway, I haven't started the diagnosis, but will right after Christmas is over. I'm reading all I can from the experienced folks here to learn all I can so I can make an educated decision on how to approach and solve these issues. So far I have received much knowledge from "Glacier991" from Sacramento (if I read this right) on the transfer case and what's in there. I hate to be just a "taker", so if I take on these units, I will try to contribute all that is possible in the process. Again thanks so much for letting me participate. Regards, Frank Richards, Virginia Beach, VA.

My other car is a 93 Thunderbird (non-SC unfortunately), so I'm obviously a Ford fan. I'm a 32 year old Clinical Laboratory Scientist in Orange County, California who like to do things himself whenever possible. So I'm sure you all will be seeing my name come up in the future with plenty of "how-do-I" questions. So thanks in advance for your help - I'm looking forward to it.

I currently have a 06 Eddie Bauer and 03 Short right now. I also used to have a supercharged 91 XLT 5-speed that I sold a few years back.
I'm looking to get some new/used rims soon for the 03 and I will have a couple sets of tires and rims for first and second gens up for sale in a couple months.

DawgGrad00 01-01-2008, 06:16 PM Thanks for having me. My real name is Ryan from a small town in NW Georgia. I currently just purchased a 2001 Sport Trac XLT for $1500 but it has some problems that I'm hoping to straighten out because the junk GMC Sierra is playing out. My first vehicle was 81 Ranger F-100 that I dearly miss. My second was a 91 Mustang. From there I went downhill with a 69 Camaro and the GMC that I just mentioned. I do have a 68 Firebird but never drive it and only have it because its all original from Hawaii. So needless to say, I'm glad to be getting back to my roots as long as the Sport Trac will pull together for, at a low cost. Again, thanks for having me here.

WendySanDiego 01-01-2008, 08:17 PM I have a 96 Explorer Sport.
do I have a clutch that can be adjusted?
It just started to slip.
Not any real problem yet.
I am hoping an adjustment will be able to fix this?????????
I know if I take it into the dealer......they'll rip me off.
Same ? about the Emer. Brake too please:exporange
thank you !
Wendy
Nosmo 01-01-2008, 09:25 PM Wendy,
I assume you have the standard transmission, 5 speed?. If so, I also assume it is just like the one I have in my 94 Explorer XLT, 4 dr, 4x4, 4.0 v6 engine. If that is so, the clutch is actuated by hydrolic pressure, not a cable. There are two cylinders in the system. The "slave cylinder" is the one that is pushed by the clutch peddle and the the other is inside the transmission bell housing and moves the clutch plate, that one is called the "master cylinder." From what I understand and have also read inside one of these forum "threads" is that it cannot be adjusted.
I do have one question, how do you know it is truly "slipping?" I have never experience it so wonder what those symptoms are.
As for the emergency brake, that could be an adjustment problem or it might be that your break shoes are worn and need replacing. It isn't too hard to see if the lining is thin or not.
Good luck and Happy 2008,
Nosmo

dubcrazy 01-04-2008, 11:33 PM Hello! I found this site searching for pics of some lifted sport tracs and have seen several on here and also found some very helpful info. Great site! I had an 01 Ranger previously but have my first child on the way and needed a couple more doors so I traded and got my 01 Sport Trac. I am very happy with it but it is 100% stock and I can't stand that too long. I am looking to lift it, add some bigger tires and wheels and do a few performance add-ons. Thanks for the welcome and a great site.

442 man 01-06-2008, 08:17 AM Hello..... just joined to see if I can get some help with some problems. We recently purchased a 98 Eddie Bauer Explorer and are loving it. Used to have a 98 Eddie Bauer Expedition but the wife felt it was too big for her to drive. I've had a 91 Ranger for years but just recently got it going again.
I've been driving cars and a 4 wheel truck since getting rid of the expedition, but wanted an SUV. Been admiring Explorers for a long time so what the heck, I bought a super clean one with quite a few miles but running like a top.
Being a classic car restorer, I'm usually over on the classic car forums and I sure get a lot of help there. I know forums are great for help so I'm looking forward to posting some questions about some underneath noise that has me baffled since nothing is loose. I'll soon be posting over on the other question threads.

Deni Martin 01-07-2008, 04:08 PM Hi! I just registered and found this site by doing a google search on a part number.
My fiance has a 2002 Explorer XLT (I have a '03 Monte)....but I drive the truck. We both love the truck, but we have been having all of the problems that you can find on the net about the 2002.
Quite recently we needed the 4WD, but it wouldn't engage. I sat at the dealer today for almost 4 hours for them to find what is wrong, and I am not completely trusting what they tell me, so I thought...what the hey....I will try this forum to see what all advice (good or bad) I can get from you people :)
As I said, I really love the truck. I just need some help with finding out what is going on with it and hope some folks here can help guide us in the right direction.
I am going to spend some time here and look around and see what all I can find. I look forward to meeting you all :)
Deni

Coosfaba 01-07-2008, 10:26 PM :us: Hello newbies, welcome to the Forum. Hey wait, I'm a newbie, myself! Only been here about a couple of months, ever since I got my Explorer. Used the 4X4 yesteday off road for the first time. It was a little strange because I was all alone in the woods and only had room the width of my truck. Found a place to turn around and I was coming back when I got into some real slick red mud (North Carolina mud), going up an incline. the back tires started to spin and my truck was starting to slide sideways. First I thought maybe I'll back down the hill and get a running start. Then I thought, this was a good time to try out the 4X4. I stopped, put my trans. (auto) in neutral and pressed the 4X4 button. I heard the appropiate clunk and it was ingaged. Put it in Drive and Immediately my truck pulled right up the hill with no problems at all. I guess it's no big deal to a veteran 4 wheeler, but I was extremely happy. I was hopin and hollerin and said "Yes!" When I got out of there I just stopped, put it in neutral and pushed the 4X4 button again and then I went in the opposite direction for at least 10 feet and it was disingaged and I was on my way. I left a lot of mud on the road for about a mile. Went right to the car wash and it was clean again. Maybe I should have left the mud on awhile, but hey, it was Sunday. :D

Glen4X4 01-09-2008, 07:30 AM Hey ddb Welcome To The Forum! What kinda truck ya got?
Blackcypress-EB 01-09-2008, 03:31 PM As you can see by my join date I have lurked for a while. My '02 4.0 2WD has the typical tranny problems and I am trying to overcome them or get rid of it, which I hate to do because it is a good vehicle for the wife. It has hesitation shifting between all gears and the lag between park and reverse. I had a buddy that owns an AAMCO shop hook it up and drive around but it showed no codes. I am going to service it this weekend and hope a good cleaning and fresh fluid helps. The weirdest thing is when you place the shifter in the 3 position past Drive, the car goes straight to third gear, meaning it takes off in third and never gets out of it. It didn't throw a code while doing this either. Oh yeah, my panel under the back glass is busted all to crap just like everybody else's. Thanks FORD.
I found the ratiotek pdf which I will hang on to and some other good stuff here, Thanks Y'all.

bsbishop13 01-11-2008, 10:49 PM I'm a newbie here and still lovin' my 99 XLT! OK, so I'm getting ready to replace the transmission and have an annoying problem with the driver side door lock. Other than that, it's in perfect shape and is my baby! My daughter wanted me to sell it and by a new vehicle? Why? It's paid for, runs ggrreeaatt, looks pretty darn good and a transmission is a lot cheaper than a new vehicle.
I've worked on cars since I was a little girl and have no problems tearing an engine down if the need arises. So far, my baby hasn't given me any problems other than the tranny but if it should, I'm ready!!

pocodon 01-13-2008, 01:32 AM I've been skimming thru this site for several years now and have previously been registered on this site, don't recall what name I was under, have found lots of helpful info and hopefully might be able to contribute.
I've got a 1999 sport 4.0 litre ohv, red in color, 4" superlift kit, a powertrax locker with 4:10 gears, basically 32" yokohama mt's,a warn 8000i winch on one of those cradles so I can mount it front or rear, also just upgrded the radio to a pioneer with infinity speakers, Wouldn't mind upgrading the horses one day though cause it lacks power when loaded.
pocodon 01-13-2008, 02:00 AM 1999 sport, in the last year or so the truck has become a little hard to start, nothing serious but it just wants to crank more than usual, it's got an Optima battery which is about 2 years old so shoud'nt be that, any ideas?
Glen4X4 01-13-2008, 05:26 AM Welcome To The Forum!
BrooklynBay 01-13-2008, 09:33 AM Welcome to this forum! The battery isn't the problem since it cranks. Clean the MAF sensor, and check the ECT sensor with an Ohmmeter to see if it's within spec.

EddieBauer5.0AWD 01-14-2008, 10:00 PM Just wanted to say hi to all and I just joined. I stumbled upon this site doing a yahoo search on changing lower ball joints and found "Mountineer Green" very helpfull info. Then I got playing around and found a lot of posts about mods, exhaust, lifts, etc....(I love "jtsmith" 's rig.....I want to build a 347 for my EB.........That sounds awesome!!) I used to be a Chevy man when I was younger, I had c-10's, V-8 s-10's, camaros, etc.....then one day a friend of mine told me about a friend of his wanting to sell a 1989 fox body mustang 5.0 and he told me I should give it a try (test drive)....after all, my friend had a v-8 drop top mustang and it was pretty much stock besides under drive pullies, mac shorty shifter and K-n-N filter. It went OK, not fast, just OK. When I laid my eyes on this mustang LX hatch, I says..."looks like a typical ford mustang, weld drag lite wheels and tinted windows.....are you embarrased to drive it and that is why you want to sell it"? He gave me the keys and I said I will be right back, nothing could compare to my super GM camaro z-28. Needless to say, I was out driving that car for 45 minutes.......IT WAS AWESOME!! And that my hopefull friends is when the FORD bug bit me. I kept that mustang for 4 years while I phased out the Blazer and bought a 94 Explorer sport w/ a 5 speed tranny and drove that trouble free....untill the tranny went. I bought a new tranny, and drove her somemore, then I got the line on a southern (SC) 98 EB AWD, I said I will be down in a week to get it. I drove it up from SC to CNY and am still driving it. Now that I have found an Explorer fourm, I want to put her in the garage and modify it to be a sleeper.....Who needs a Mustang when an Explorer is 10 times the fun kicking the crap out of unsuspecting import "wanna be" racers!

brooklynchris 01-15-2008, 08:10 PM Hey guys, I came across the site doing a random search for a stereo for my brothers new 05 Explorer. I took his 97 EB off his hands yesterday and I have found a great deal of helpful information here. I'm hands on and will do pretty much all the things on it that need to be fixed. Mostly minor stuff like door handle replacement and blend door repair. It took me no time to find links with quick fixes.

BrooklynBay 01-16-2008, 10:47 PM Welcome to this forum!
HondaPeople 01-16-2008, 11:15 PM We are new members (wife and I), we haven't officially purchased our Explorer yet, but wanted to get started on talking with folks about their Explorer's--likes and dislikes. We are considering purchasing an '07 or 08 Explorer Ed Bauer or Limited. We've always been Honda people, but wanted an actual 4x4. We have friends that have Explorer's and they love them; so we thought we would come here to learn as much about them before purchasing one. We love the '07 and the '08's and hope to own one soon. So... here we are!
BrooklynBay 01-16-2008, 11:18 PM Welcome to this forum! Did you ever test drive a 4 X 4 Explorer?
HondaPeople 01-17-2008, 12:17 AM Thank you for the welcome! We just test drove an '07 Explorer 4x4 V8 this past weekend. We enjoyed the ride. It was relatively quiet around town and had descent acceleration in city traffic and merging onto the highway. We were pretty set on an XLT with the V8 and 4x4, then our sales person told us about the program vehicles that typically have under 20,000 miles, have the full Ford warranty and can be had for thousands less being up to a year old. The '07 we test drove had the second row captains chairs (something we don't want, as we prefer the 7 passenger seating). However we got a feel for the vehicle and like the overall size, and feel that it will fit our needs for our growing children. We want a vehicle that is capable of true 4x4 off road ability, can tow up to 7000 lbs, hold up to 7 passengers, have neat bluetooth features like SYNC, and be relatively quiet for a mid-sized SUV. The only other vehicle that we've found that similarly matches the Ford in features, price, and specs, is the '07-08 Nissan Pathfinder V8. We like the look, but it appears much smaller than the Explorer. Having the V8 is important to us for towing a camper. So, that's what we think so far. Thank you again for the welcome!

PaintMan00 01-19-2008, 01:20 AM Hey, I'm Josh, from Starkville, MS. I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4WD OFF ROAD. I recently replaced the hub bearings, ball joints, and the inner tie rod ends. Then, the local Ford dealership service dept. applied a front-end wheel alignment. I did all the work except the alignment. The service dept. checked everything replaced, and approved of my repairs, but they didn't see if the hubs would lock to the axle. I noticed my hubs not locking shortly after the repairs were completed. My transfer case, axles, cv joints, and the shift or shift-on-fly switch is perfectly okay>>>>>are they're problems with the PVH hubs that I have b/c they are vacuum assisted. Need help, Please!!!!!!!>>>I am thinking about converting the hubs to either WARN or SUPERWINCH manual hubs. Thanks!!!, Josh!!!

I have a 98 XLT, I purchased it for my son over a yr ago. It now looks like I am going to be rebuilding the engine and trans. The vehicle has right at 200K miles on it and I got it at a bargin price, so I am not going to complain.
Thanks again for the forum, it sure looks like it will come in handy.
Thanks

I am new to this form. I am now a freshman in college and most likely to major in mechanical engineering.
I've had my '02 explorer now for about six months with 41k on it and love it. Haven't been off road yet.
Although now I am getting a bit concerned about the reliability of the transmission. I've got the 5R55E. Has anyone seen this page recently?

What is everybody's experience with this transmission? Any helpful hints to help prolong the tranny life would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi James and welcome to the Forum. Welcome all new members. I'm new myself. I also used to be in that life. (Corvette's) and this is new to me and I love it. I have only had my X for about 2 months and have had it off road a few times already. By the way, I'm from your neck of the woods originally. Stony Point on the Hudson. My wife and I used to ride up over your way on our motorcycle, in the summer. I remember the Park on the water. John :us:
Jothcra 01-26-2008, 06:18 PM Hello! I'm new here. (obviously, heh)
I'm 16 and my first car is our family's old '97 XLT. It's still in pretty good shape, no rust or dents (plenty of scratches though, and part of the door trim is coming off). I'll try and get some pictures up later.

Y2Kris 01-30-2008, 12:28 PM Back in search of info to fix a friends 92 sport 5sp w/inactive SOF;
the X was purchased in part of a move to Eastern Wash to deal with the occasional snow and to allow more cargo for shopping than the Pontiac Sunfire as well as to drag a trailer for hauling hay or the appliance <=> larger items.
part of the issue relating to the STB SOF is that the previous owners' selling for friend removed the aftermarket super stereo and clipped wires puller whatever was in the way and informed his ~friend~ that the X was burgled . . .
I will search posts and feel free to edit this as appropriate as I see that this may not be the ~topic~ to post these issues.
.
my first ~ride~ was a 1965 Mustang 200 I6 3sp on column purchased with blown 1st gear bought in 1974 (I was junior in high school) for $200 and a trip to J-Y got a $35 replacement 3sp (the first from J-Y was filled with sawdust; the 2nd was not LoL)

fangotango306 02-01-2008, 12:21 PM hey im new to this site .... i am a ford fanatic and i am in the navy:salute:, i just returned from a deployment in africa and my wife bought us a 99 sport, 2wd automatic, i have had 7 rangers and numerous cars but this is my first explorer, sort of. i also have a wrecked 2000 sport 4x4. i found a link to this site form therangerstation.com and i am very impressed with it so far. i hope to modify my exploder fairly heavily with my wife and new baby son in mind.....i would love to go crazy on it but she still has to be comfortable in it. one thing i have noticed is most of the members to this site have 4wd explorers...i have had a couple 4x4 rangers with lifts and one with a v8 swap, however i intend on building this explorer into more of a street truck, possibly bag it and start shaving the body. i hope my posts about a street explorer will be welcomed and i dont get too many people mad talking about lowering it. i would like to pop a transfer case in it and a solid axle but where i am living and with the current price of gas it seems like a better idea to get closer to the ground and go for looks rather then articulation. thanx and im sure i will enjoy this site

fredhdyman 02-06-2008, 01:26 PM Hi All, I have been using this site for a few weeks now and have found this invaluably. I have repaired the front auto hubs, and the loose bearings which in the past cost me quite a few bucks. Also I replaced the pads since everything was thorn open. I'm now trying to figure out where the noise is coming from underneath. Jacked the Eddy up on its fours and ruled out the transfer case but I believe it is either the rear u-joints or hopefully not but might be the rear differential. The noise seams to whine from speeds at 15 MPH and up but no clunk sound when braking or accelerating?
One thing I haven't found is info on the stock alarm system, if I lock the car I can only enter from the passenger door or the alarm goes off? If someone could direct me on where to find any info I would be much appreciative. Oh yes the stock wireless key entry quit a few years ago and I would like to solve this problem too. Thanks for a great problem solving site.
Fred

I signed up last June but never really "explored" the site until today. I already found some very good information regarding the rear diff maintenance!!!
I have a 2004 Explorer Ltd. and bought it three years ago with only 20K kms. Now, it has just over 100K and the truck still looks the same! Maintenance wise, I need to change the oil in the transmission, transfer case and both diffs. My rear diff has a very small leak that I want to fix along with the maintained. My transmission oil was already changed at 50K by a garage that had a machine that hocked up to the hoses on the truck. Isn't there an other way to do this?
At the same time, I'll most probably change my brakes - front and back. Any suggestions on where to buy the parts would be appreciated.
Anyway, good to join the forum finally and chat with you guys soon!

myslyn 02-07-2008, 12:15 PM Hi. I'm new here, well, not that new because I did not post in this forum first. I was in NEED of help, post haste, regarding my '93 Ford Explorer with 204k in mileage. :-)
It's a good running vehicle and my hubby and I are trying to learn more about upkeep and better performance. This forum has been a blast with so many people who are helpful and want to offer advice, and a joke or two.
I've always been the type that was mechanically inclined and I love working with tools...no jokes, please! :p: I was the kid who took my toys apart or grabbed the screwdriver to tinker in the back of the tv when the reception went bad. So, this is enjoyable for me, not so for my hubby, but together, we'll learn alot!
thanks again...

jwinlaporte 02-07-2008, 01:30 PM Hello,
The pictures and descriptions on the a4ld rebuild are spectacular. My 91 Ranger super cab 4x4 has the-often mentioned on this site-slow reverse engagement problem. Will replace the reverse servo o-rings fix the problem?
Did it a while ago, complete success!!! My gratitude for that helpful diary of a rebuild. It snaps into reverse and drive now.
Where do I go to ask about died in drive-won't restart (cranks strong and fast but no combustion)?
Shiseiji 02-07-2008, 01:33 PM Greetings all. Ron here, '98 XLT Sport, 132k miles, so far only the intake o rings and fuel pump have crapped out on me (well the rear wiper too, but haven't got off my butt to see if it is a relay or what LOL). Have replaced the rear brakes but not the front, a first for me the rears going before the front. Time to do some suspension work and was shopping for bushing when I found the site. So here I am. :)
Glen4X4 02-07-2008, 01:38 PM Welcome To The Forum Ya'll!
BrooklynBay 02-07-2008, 01:48 PM Welcome to this forum! I would recommend the TransTec Viton D ring kit for the low/reverse servo instead of regular O rings. A shift kit, and end plugs with O rings might also help the delayed engagement issue.
SVTFocus101 02-07-2008, 03:41 PM Hey people!
New to this site, but familiar with sites like this, I am member of a Ford Focus enthuses site much like this.
My two rides:
2002 SVT Focus, Black, 25K miles, rarely driven w/ 288WHP, 266TQ. Intercooled turbo charged, fully loaded with suspension, clutch LSD, wheels, tires, etc
2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V6 4x4. I just pursed the car from my grandpa who purchased it brand new early 2003, it was his road trip car, so it’s very clean no issues, plus he sold it to me for 4500 bucks!. It has 10600 miles on it. Chrome wheels (Not OEM, would like to trade for OEM). And nerf bars. Anyway, glad to be here, I do have several questions, but will ask those in the appropriate threads, thanks!

Hardtail 02-08-2008, 12:05 PM Hi folks, newbie here. I'm Chris from Philadelphia Pa and I have been sitting on my '96 Exp for a couple of years trying to decide what to do with it. Now that I decided to convert it from a 6 to a 8 cyl, I came across this forum and am finding it very helpful and informative and look forward to reading as much as possible in a short time, and hopefully contributing some.
Glen4X4 02-08-2008, 02:12 PM Welcome To The Forum! Alot of information here on V8 Conversions. One of the easiest routes I think is to just get the motor and drivetrain from another explorer/mounty with the V8. Good luck.

myslyn 02-08-2008, 09:11 PM Welcome to this forum! Do you want to know about tune ups or something specific?
Yeah, well, I'm good on the tune-up side of things but the maintenance on the sensors (relay, throttle, IAC, etc.) well, that is what we need to understand more about. Now that the truck is older, these things are falling apart and if we learn more, we can do more.
Thanks for asking; I NEED all of the help I can get...

Hello, New Member Here in TN. I have a 2000 Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC (140,000 miles) that will not idle when the engine is cold. It starts, but dies, then will idle rough after the second or third start, but I have to hold the RPM's up to keep it going for a minute or two. I use Shell gasoline, have installed new plugs and air filter, used F.I. cleaners. Does anyone have any advice on what may fix my problem? Thanks in advance for your help.
BrooklynBay 02-12-2008, 09:17 AM Welcome to this forum! It might be the IAC valve. Spray it with fuel injection cleaner to clean it out. You might have to replace it if it doesn't help.

topless 02-13-2008, 08:05 AM Hey guys. I joined because I just bought a '98 Eddie Bauer with every option and 60,000 miles. I've had many Mustangs with 5.0's a few with AOD's, most were T-5's or TKO's. My current Mustang is an '03 Cobra with a Kenne Bell, and appropriate mods to make just over 500hp on pump gas with 18 psi, 630 on race gas and 22 psi.
My past 5.0's never stayed stock long, but I'm not sure how much of my typical Stang mods will help this truck. Also, I'm not planning on racing it and don't want it to lose drivability. I know that the ECU in '94-95 Stangs didn't like mods and I changed them to an A9L Foxbody.
This truck ended up with some ugly 3 spoke wheels and Goodyear lumps that have to go, but I've only found a couple of replacement wheels that fit. The Tire rack has 2, and they're not much. They are very cautious because of the tire recall.
So, I'm going to be looking for some help with engine upgrades, exhaust, and wheels right off the bat. See ya around.

I'm a newbie, I've lurked the site on and off and finally decided to join. I'm from STL, Missouri and I have a 2002 Sport with a few minor mods here and there with a major MAF issue. I love my Explorer and I was hoping to get some answers from the best here :) Hope I get to meet and talk to a few of you soon!

Mud_Bone 02-15-2008, 01:55 AM Hey All,
Came across this forum by accident and glad I did. Found lots of good info on it so far, keep up the good work.
I just bought a 2000 XLS for the Mrs. and have a '97 XLT, '95 XLT and a '96 Mustang GT on standby.
I also have a '95 XLT rollover :roll:with only 4,200 miles that I bought and am I'm looking to do a complete body swap with another '95 with a shelled drivetrain that I picked up to do as a father/son project. (The wife said I should take up golf) :D
I'm sure somebody here has done this before and I was wondering how many hours/days and 12-packs of beer for a project like this. Thanks!!
Glen4X4 02-15-2008, 05:03 AM Welcome To The Forum! Your with the right folks now since your into ex's :D Goodluck with your bodyswap.

FordxMan 02-15-2008, 09:18 PM Hi, my name is Steven, I am from the California. This is a great site and I will use it every day. I own a 2007 Sport Trac Limited 4x4. I have had some problems with it, but I had a 1999 Explorer XLT that was not perfect either. My dealership has worked very hard to fix all my problems. I must say that FORD has fixed or satisfied all my issues. I really like this new Explorer Sport Trac. It has the 4.6L V-8, with the Magnaflow exhaust it rocks!!!! My tires(Michellens) are done at 33K(check out picture). Thanks for a great site!!!Stevenhttp://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj109/FordxMan/th_P8180450.jpg (http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj109/FordxMan/P8180450.jpg)

polarisman 02-18-2008, 05:39 AM Hello all. I am new to the forum. I might be buying an 01 sport trac soon and am trying to do some research first. Actually I think I will be buying it tomorrow either way now.
Glen4X4 02-18-2008, 05:48 AM Welcome To The Forum! Why do you say you think you'll be buying it either way now? Did folks on the site have an influence on you? :D. I'm guessing since your in Pa. your getting a 4X4 right? These things go great off-road even if its all stock unless of course your trying to do rock crawling or go in big ruts.

It's really nice but i am trying to find a two bike rack for it and it's kind of weird with the preexisting bars going down the roof. if i didn't have to spring for the $100 cross beams that would be cool. if anyone has any good ideas let me know. thanks.

Snowy 02-22-2008, 05:01 AM Hi to everyone.
I inherited a 96 XLT when my dear old dad (70) upgraded to a sportier new Nissan Pathfinder.
Dad isn't much of a maintenance type. Drive it 10 years or so and give it away is the SOP.
It's taken a bit of work to sort out the little gremlins.
It has 140 000Km on it. Dad had a bit of trouble with servicing as Ford couldn't sort out a transfer case problem. The 3rd case was the charm though. Then the clutch died. Then the tailshaft fell off. Then a Yokohama tyre delaminated at 120km/h and the resulting vibration snapped a leaf spring.
I have all that behind me now and after getting loose under the "hood" and remembering the good old days playing with my first 4x4 (chev 327 in short w/base FJ40 Landcruiser) I suddenly realised why I switched to buying new cars. Damn they cram a lot of junk into a small space these days.
I am now on a quest to find some go fast goodies here in the land of Oz so I can transform the old OHV 4.0 V6 into a respectable performer. Not that it isn't doing ok for what it is. At AUS$1.40 / liter i could just do with a little more "mileage". I got 23 1/2 MPG on a recent trip of 1200km (I'm old school and do my mileage in UK MPG). Which dad tells me is the best it has ever done.
Does anyone have any experiance with Jocobs ignition products? In particular the after market Tower coil for the V6? There is also an Accel 300+ ignition kit I'm looking at. Any ideas if they are worth the money? At the rate the Aus dollar (south pacific peso) is I could mail order and save quite a bit on importers prices.
Cheers.
