Just wanted to say Welcome and Hello to everyone who has joined since I first posted on this thread. I just wanted to add some additional information so you can find your way around the site a little better.

You may have noticed some smiles on some of the members posts and wondered where they came from. Here’s a link to help you add a little more to your posts: Smilies (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?action=showsmilies)

Not all forums have the Smile function available, but you can still use smiles in your post by going to: http://hometown.aol.com/riffman80/smiles.html Riffman was generous enough to make this page and help save Rick some bandwidth.

Another important page on the site is the vB Codes Page (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?action=bbcode) This page explains everything from URL Hyperlinking to Posting Images to writing in bold, underlined, or italicized words. This is one of the most useful pages to use when you are posting. Just to let you know, you can not simply paste a photo in your post, you have to use the codes and the photo must have an address in order to be posted. Most members use http://www.photopoint.com to put their photos on the web.

For further reference on posting pictures and images, check out Lee’s helpful post at this link: Photos ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=22325)

If you have any further questions, feel free to e-mail either me or any of the other Moderators! Thanks, and welcome to ExplorerForum.com!:)

I guess I'll be spending a little more time here shortly... I've still got the lemon Explorer which hasn't moved since January, but I'm getting a 93 Ranger 4.0 OHV for a beater-vehicle. The body is solid (except for the tailgate) and the drivetrain is solid. The interior is a little worn, but nothing some hot-glue can't fix! :) I think it'll make a MUCH better winter vehicle than the Probe did.

I just want to say hi to everyone and thanks for making a great site! I currently have a '91 Explorer Sport 4x4 and I love it. I have had it for 3 years and it only has 82,000 miles on the odo. I'm glad to see a site that deals with just Explorers/Navajos since I rarely see information about them in magazines these days. I will definitely be checking out the site more and posting here more too! Thanks. :)

i just started offroading with my friend in his jeep (my explorer isn't trail ready yet), but his isn't lifted like yours. he just has some bigger tires for a little more clearance.

Whats up everyone? I am a 19 year old from Alabama. I have a '96 XLT which I am trying to do some work on. Its not easy being the broke college boy that I am. However I have been able to put a mere G or so into it so far. Mostly just little things such as a westin light bar. I like it but may take it off and replace it with a rhino. My next thing will be some clear corners and a billet grill. Then my summer job should be kicking in and I will do a lift and some bigger tires. When my work is complete I will post a pic and let you professionals tell me whats good and whats not. :shoot: as long as you dont hurt my feelings! I have seen some very impressive X's by the way.

I have just purchased a 2002 Explorer XLS Sport, I have owned two 4x4 pickups previously and know a healthy share of knowledege. I have been all over MI (except Drummond Island), Wisconsin (Badgerland TNT off road group a few years back) and in the South. I will try and share as much info as I can to all. I am liking this site more and more! This is my second day in here.

Hello all. Saw the reply from TwoToneX. I'm just searching around here. I am from NJ and I just recently bought a 2002 XLT, Green color. This is my 3rd Explorer, my first with 4 drs. The other two I had were Sports. I love my new one. But it has what Ford calls a "Phantom unlock". When I go to lock the driver's door with the button, it thinks the keys are in the ignition and unlocks the door on me. But it will lock with the remote on the key chain. My dealer says Ford is coming out with a solution sometime after the second quarter this year. I also saw the comment for ECX from Yob_yeknom. Is there a NJ chapter? Nice to meet you all! Hello- I am a new member, just joined on Friday. I haven't had much time yet to look around, but I am happy with what I see. As soon as the weather is nice and I can clean up my 2000 Explorer XLT, I will get some pictures of it on the site. Is there a Missiouri Chapter? My husband is a member of the F150 World Club, and he enjoys it so much I thought I would join the Explorer Club.

There is a Chapter for New Jersey. Do a search for East Coast Xplorers and you'll find all the info you need to start off with.

Sorry, there is no Missouri Chapter at this time. But that may change.... ;)

yob_yeknom, I tried doing a search on East Coast Xplorers and I can't come up with anything on the web. I tried other searches as well. Is there a web site? Or should I be searching somewhere particular?

 I have to say for those who bought a 2002 model, I received today, by UPS a package from Ford, of which my husband is jealous of... it contained 2 of those nice folding director chairs that has Explorer and Ford Outfitters embroidered on the back on them. With a nice carrying case. I am impressed, and my husband can't believe he got nothing for his 2002 F150.

Welcome aboard and you aren't that far from Colorado which is just next to Moab so hopefully we will see you guys at Moab this year.
And no you can't use having a 2000 Explorer work as an excuse for not going, because MMPC took his 2000 last year with less then 1000 miles on it.

Just got my Explorer a few months back and found this very interesting forum. I hope I can add to it as you have before me.
I will be modifying my 96 Xplorer XLT V6 for both show and regular street use. I'm sure I'll need help since Xplorer's are new to me.
So far I've got a Smittybuilt Outland grill-brush guard, Jetchip, Lund sunvisor, Flowmaster cat-back, BBK throttle body, B&M automatic shift plus, and K&N Fipk. I'll get it done eventually.

Hi,
Just bought an Explorer, here in the UK. :redexp:
I was hoping to find some others from the UK here.
I've been told that there are less than 4500 Explorers here in the UK. I know I haven't seen another one on the road, and only 2 in the showrooms.
I've worked in the States before and want to get the X up to spec. I look forward to learning from you Guys.
:o
I'll have to learn alot about this SUV, and this looks like the place.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
I'm sure I'll be asking some questions in the near future. At present I'm just trying to find my way around the board.
My first project will be "Indiglo Gauges", I'll just have to get them sent over from the States. I found the very good "How to" on it.
I think even I could follow those great instructions.
(I Hope).

Good luck with the gauges.
I asume like me yours is the UK spec which seems to be a mix of USA specs with some oddballs thrown in.
I'm putting in rear vents as soon as they turn up (should be tommorrow with luck)

Hi:D

Registered here in July when I found this site by surfing the web. Grrrreat site! Can get just about every :redexp: question answered.

Got my 91 :exp: in '99 when I took it in trade for an upaid invoice my business. It makes for a great survey vehicle. Can get me/our crew to places we had to walk to before.

Took it on vacation to the OBX several times - had fun on the beach. Wife thought it was so comfortable, when I suggested a personal Ex, she agreed. So we looked and found a 'new' 97 :redexp: in May. Loaded! Quite a change from the 4x2 T*y**a PU. :) Crusies on the interstate at 75 or climbs a steep, rocky road with equal aplomb! Most impressed with the Control Trac system.

Hey...just thought I'd jump in and get started with this Explorer stuff. This looks like a great site and I am sure I will spend a lot of time here. I am coming over from the StangNet website where I have been for 4 years. I am still recovering from letting my stang go. I had poured a lot of sweat and money into it (93 GT Vert) and had it in the low 12 second range...but...it was just getting impractical to keep up.
I love my (new) 99 XLS and hope to do a few mods to it also...just not to the same extreme! I'm in my 40's now and need to keep things on the sane side.
I've got the XLS with the 4.0 OHC with 29,000 miles on the ticker. The inside and outside is mint.
Anyway, real nice to meet you all. This site setup resembles my old stangnet place so I already feel right at home.

Woo Hoo, my first post!

I bought a black 2000 Explorer Sport 4X4 about a month and a half ago and haven't regretted it one bit (okay, there's the rear wiper that doesn't clean properly, but that'll get fixed).

I've been enjoying the posts on this board and have learned a lot, like where to find the keypad code (in the tire jack compartment) and all sorts of neat stuff. Funny enough I had read the anti-SUV book "High and Mighty" before buying the Explorer Sport. The 'horror' stories in it merely resolved my desire to buy a SUV. Face it, if you're a lousy driver, it doesn't matter what you drive, you're still a lousy driver.

After spending an inordinate amount of money the past month or so on (touchless) car washes I finally had a chance tonight (in 2 degree Celsius weather) to use the power washer my wife gave me for Christmas...a toy that's 'supposed' to be for cleaning the siding and back deck! I took it out and zapped off about a week's worth of salt and crud. Felt great, but I can't wait for the first really nice day to take out a pail, a jug of Armorall wash, a bag of cotton diapers (a tip picked up on another site), plus a good wax/polish. That's when I can really go to town!

Welcome Aboard Chris!

Yes, there are quite a few lowered Xs here. Just take a quick look through the Sport Truck forum to see some nice pics. To determine whether your engine is an OHV or SOHC, just pop the hood. If it says SOHC on top of the engine, you have an SOHC. It is says EFI on top of the engine, you have a OHV.

Found this great forum on google search. Have just purchased the Explorer Sport 2003 end of year clearance. Thought I was getting a regular Explorer with the only diff being the 2 doors instead of 4, however after getting home found out it was a different suspension  . However, although it doesn't have independent suspension in the back, it should be OK. A little jumpy over bumps if sitting in the back seats, but better than our Mustang. It is the XLT with the Premium Sport package, posi-trac in the rear. It really is the nicest vehicle I have had. Power around town is great, and it turns much easier on the corners than I expected it to. Is there anyone here that has found a good cargo area protector and/or organizer that they like? Ford dealer has one, but I would like to see if there is anything better available. Again, hi to all, and thanks to those providing this forum.

Blee, how do you like the drilled airbox. I'm thinking about doing that or getting the KKM intake. Did you put another filter in like K&N? Do you think a drilled airbox gets the same results as a KKm replacement? Just curious.

The drilled is okay but I plan on going to an open element eventually.. Definately go with a KKM or K&N.. I go with KKM, I believe they are a supporter of this site.

Hey guys, its great being a part of your forum now; the main thing on my mind is what tranny my 98 SOHC has, i count 5 gears, but it might be my mind telling me what i want to hear. Can someone tell me the VIN character that denotes the 5 speed auto, or do me one better and decode the whole VIN for me. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know where I can pick one up for a 2000 model??

Hi, I live in the UK and own a 1997 Explorer. It is right hand drive, has 4 wheel abs, self leveling susp on rear, air con, leather, wheel arch extensions, and 255/70/16 tyres all as standard on UK models. How does this compare with your cars? Also, can't get any accessories or interesting info over here. Afraid they've stopped importing Explorers.

There isn't any state chapters but I believe there is a mid-west group.. Look in the Explorer clubs & Events forum.. If you interested in meeting some members in your area, you can do a search based on location like state or city under the Member list Advanced Search.

Hi Everyone,

I just became a Ford Explorer owner, this past Wednesday, as I purchased a used 2003 XLT 4x4, with the 4.6 V8.

What a great SUV it is and with the 4.6, it has a lot of power and runs very smooth. I was a little disappointed, as after I visited one the the Ford F150 forums, I discovered I will be getting a serious recall notice, from Ford, concerning the back glass and door hinge recall.

I have owned various Ford products since around 1963, when I purchased my first, used 1961 Ford Fairlane 500 (352 V8 and 3 on the column). I currently am the proud owner of a 99 Ford F-150 XLT (with a 4.6, also). I traded a VERY used 96 Taurus LX (160,000 trouble-free miles) in, on the Explorer.

I plan on spending a lot of time on this forum and will appreciate learning from all of you.

By the way, I am a forum moderator, over on the Online Trombone Journal Forum (http://forum.trombone.org); so, if anyone plays the trombone or knows anyone who is a trombonist, send them our way.

Welcome to the site.....

The cheapest way to gain a 2" lift is to put on some Warrior shackles on the back, and F150 coil spacers up on the front.

There are literally 25+ threads on those, so run a search on those items.:D

But soon looking for around a 3-5" lift and hopefully 33's. I just have a few questions. One: On my 4x4 selector (knob on dash) when I switch straight from 2wd to 4wdLow, the 4x4 light doesn't come on, but when I put it 4wdAuto, wait a sec for the lgiht, then put into 4x4Low the light stays on? Is this normal ? Also, I hear a lot about the warrior shackles and f150 coil spacers and have seen a lot in the threads, but I've never seen a place listed to get these items... any help would be apprecieated... thanks.

Welcom to the site, the thing with the 4wd light is normal, mine does the same thing, the warrior shackles you should look around to see where you can get the cheapest price - desert rat - 4 wheel parts - or on this forsale/trade/wanted forum on this board, not sure on the coil spacers though.

I used kit number pa853, it will be the same number for yours, now the body kit installation was a breeze, no modifications need to be done for the bodylift, now the bumpers and raising them flush with the rest is a FREAKING nightmare!!! Trust me I think I worked on this for two weekends, the bumper brackets that come with this kit will not work on your x, some ppl have said though that the rear bumper brackets from this kit WILL work on the the back end, dont know didnt try them, they said that they ordered the front bumper brackets from kit# 883 to use for the front bumper. I had mine custom made from a template on this website and found them to be a lil off and a Huge pain it the ass as well

Noob to Ford, just picked up an '04 XLT Sport 4.0 for a daily driver. Gunna drop in a K&N soon, but I got a question. The parts guy at the stealer could not find molded splash guards in his parts book for this thing. He had a listing for an XLT but not the XLT Sport because it has cladding on the wheel wells. Vehicle also has the optional step bars. Can anyone help with part #'s or an aftermarket product for this vehicle?

Hi people just joined, and guess what I need help......
I've got a 4.0 L SOHC V6 1997 explorer and the transmission has gone. tough luck I hear you say, but there's more..... I drove the car down from good old England (UK that is) to southern Spain been here for a year with no trouble untill now.....HELP!!
I've taken the car to a english mechanic to repair it be still not happening. The car will drive in 4x4 low but it wont move in auto or in 4x4 high it just revs and makes a whizzing noise. Anyway I've given the car to some Mexican's who deal purly with american cars but they are at a loss. So I got onto Ford and they have dropped the bombshell that they no longer sell the complete box only parts. So there must be someone out there that can help me?

Crankcase

If it is only moving in 4x4 LOW...then the transfer case is shot, and not the tranny.....

Crankcase thanks for getting back to me matey, I just need to find out what the case is and how do I go about sorting it out. It's strange coz at times the car will work in normal drive then as I accelerate I lose the gears and the whizzing starts, so I have to stop the car put it into neutral, switch to 4x4low and then it will drive again. So Crankcase do you still diagnose the same problem?

Thanks again mate.

Hello all!

My Name is Mark and I am one of the two masters of the European
Ford Explorer Board: www.explorer-board.de

We build up that board in July 20th, 2004 to give all European Explorer
Owners a home.
Since the FORD Motor Campany decided not to sell the Explorer Series
in Europe anymore we have the feeling to drive an "Oldtimer"!

Most of the FORD mechanics tell us they don't know the Explorer any-
more or are not able to repair it.
Parts are getting expensive and seldom.

You must think it funny, but we are going to preserve our XPs as
Oldtimers ...
If You wish to get more informations please don't hesitate to contact
me (m.lohrer@explorer-board.de).

Members of this board who plan to visit good old Europe next Year
should also plan to visit our
1st European Explorer Meeting taking place June 10th-12th, 2005
near Dusseldorf.
It is not necassary to bring Your XP with You! :)

Yours, Mark

P.S.: Sorry, although our board is a European Board, German is the
main language this time, we work on it...!

Hello everyone. I just pickup up a 94 XLT 4x2 yesterday.
It just has a few minor problems with it, but nothing major.
I have some plans for it but nothing to radical. I already have the head unit & door speakers dealt with. I'm going to pick up my AMP & subs today.
As for this site. It looks really good. I already did a bunch of searching & awnsered most of my pressing questions.

Well, i'm glad to be here. Looks like a knowledgeable bunch of folks here. I like that.

I will be donating soon to Elite Explorer :)

Hi, I'm a new member that joined 11/11/04. I stumbled across your site while trying to get information about fuel lines leaking. I have a '91 Explorer Sport 4X4 that was pretty well worn out when I bought it for the small price of $1,500. I have seen some pics of some really nice Explorers on here, but mine is not "show quality" LOL I do, however like my truck. I have a leak at the end of the fuel line where it enters the fuel rail(?) where there is a quick-connect fitting. I have been told to replace the O-rings by a couple guys, but first I would love to hear from a real Explorer enthusiast. Do any of you agree with this? I am no mechanic and I would like to get some input if any of you would oblige a novice owner.

Found this forum while looking for solutions for sagging back end of my 98 4-Door Explorer 5.0 EB. The tail also drops way too much in my opinion while towing my boat, an 18 foot bowrider. Anyway, I was just putting up with these issues until recently, when the Explorer trashed one of my rear tires. I decided I'm going to install new shocks before I replace the tires. Now I'm debating replacing the springs as well, or maybe going with some air shocks, load-levelers, or air bags. I'd like to avoid the hassel of replacing the springs if I can avoid it, but I'm worried about the ride quality and strain on the shock mounts if I take the easy way out.

Hello,

I am new here. I have wanted an explorer for ages and finally picked up my '97 XLT this last year. Runs like a charm, but is now needing a few repairs, it had a previouse owner who took excellent care, so my work is cut out for me. I have been doing little things here and there, and have come to the point where I need help. I have always wanted to learn how to fix and soup up my ride, so when I heard about this site in another forum, I knew this was the place to come for information and advise.

Hi, everyone!

I'm new here as of last week. I found this site when I was first looking at lifting my explorer. I drive a 2000 XLS 4x4. I also have a '87 suzuki samurai for severe offroad thrashing. I custom built all the parts on my explorer. Roof rack, brush guard, interchangeable rod racks, etc. I hate buying the stuff and its too expensive anyway so I build most of it myself. I change stuff around alot so it never looks the same. I'm just never satisfied with it. But then again why would we all be here if we were satisfied with our rigs. I'm currently trying to lift it slightly without paying an arm and a leg. I'll admit it's on the road most of the time except for snow and the frequent fishing trips to the coast. Then all the road time is made up for when I put it to the test in the sugar sand! I try to go as much as I can afford it. Anyway its good to be here and nice to meet everyone. I hope to get some pics up of my rig soon.

Hello all,

I just purchased a 2WD 5.0 '98 Eddie Bauer that was totalled (very lightly hit front and rear). I plan to put the chassis under my '57 F100. I want the look of the old with the upgraded chassis and drivetrain. I have been a regular on the Mustang boards, and will be seaching here for engine mods and such.

Hey everyone I just bought myself a 94 XLT 5 speed, 4x4 4.0 v6 for $750 not to bad it was a little dirty because the man i bought it from is a mason. I found the truck sitting in 1 1/2 feet of snow, it had also been sitting there for a few weeks without being ran. when i took it for a drive she crawled out with no problem so being the champion impulse spender i am i bought it. Now with mine we are the explorer family.
Mommy 2004 XLT
Daddy 1994 Sport
Sonny 1994 XLT
The only problem they had with the truck was that i didnt tell them i bought it and on top of that i drove it accross the front lawn covered in snow and parked it there for them to see in the morning.

How ya'll doin?
My name is Lee.
My sig is actually what i use on my mustang forums. I have a 94 Blue 302 GT that was totalled, and now i'm rebuilding it into a Turbo monster. Anyways, I bought an explorer cuz the girl was buggin me about haveing a family car for the future, and i figured i already had my stang, so i bought it. Well, after 3 months, the only mods i've had time to do is clean it, and put a chrome flame on the ford logo out back. Shoot, i tried to put on a cold air, but the check engine light wouldn't go away, even after resetting it. So, that's off of there now too. I'm gonna put that 2wd switch in it too, actually, right after posting this. C ya!

Hello All!
I've been a member for some time, but this is the first time I've actually posted. I've been the proud owner of a 1999 XLT V8 5.0 since my Junior year at the Air Force Academy in 2001. She was all stock when I bought her and we've been over some decent trails around the Rampart Range in Colorado and been on many cross-country trips as the military often has me do. No worries!! She's definitely earned her name: "Tried and True"! I started reading about all the mods you can do way back then but didn't ever get really serious until this past month. The first 'mod' I did was to install XM radio with the Delphi radio taking it's place in my center console since there wasn't much room anywhere on the dash to mount it. The first real mod I accomplished was adding a Westin Sportsman Brush Guard with 6" KC Slimlites. I added Silverstar headlight upgrades and kept the old bulbs as spares in my growing spare parts kit for the trail. I just finished installing my Wilderness Safari Rack this morning with 2 5x7 KC Long-range lights and Highlift Jack mounted. Just waiting on delivery of my KC 35-series wide beam lights to be mounted on the rear of the rack for added back-up lighting and KC 46-series All-Season lights to be mounted up front with the 57's. Next step is figuring out the dual battery set-up, installing a K&N Filtercharger, and various other "winterizing" mods like battery warmers, engine block heaters, etc. I'm going to wait on the Torsion Twist & Add-a-leaf lift, 31's and gear change until I get up to my new duty assignment, Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska. If any one from Alaska has any suggestions for anything else I can do to get my truck ready for the environment up there or any clubs, please let me know. As always, I have learned a great deal from this site and look forward to many more adventures! ;)

Hi all

I just picked up my new project! A 92 Explorer 4 door. Im new to the EX but not new to wheeling and building rigs. Sold my vintage bronc that i owned for 8 years. I did so to get into a newer rig that the family and i could be a bit more comfortable when out wheeling!
The first thing i have done to the EX is put dana 60s under it! I still have to get shocks and steering done but there under there! I just cut the top off also. Im geting the rear hatch and window ready to weld in just behind the seats. I want to get it in there nice so it looks like the factory did it. I have seen some others with the top cut off but as of now have not seen it done using the factory hatch! If any one has see one post it or a link!
Again Great site and im sure i will be on here a lot!

I was on The ranger station prior to this with my previos vehical 1988 HEAVILY modded Ranger, since then a couple of way to tight trails, close calls, and flat out foot to the floor wheelin' have sent my Ranger to a better place, lucky for me I blew a head gasket in my Explorer around the same time and most of my parts will be interchangeable with some inginuity and patience, within the week I should have the suspension, body lift, and rims and tires installed onto my rust free 4 door, how many people from the NH, MA area here? Hit me up, I'm always up for a good day of wheelin'! Once she's done that is.

Then I put new brakes, urathane controll arm bushings, Procomp shocks and a 4 wheel allignment. It would be a great truck if I could only get it to stop shaking. I'm about ready to try replacing all the bushings in the front end with urathane ones. I'll have to have it done so it's gonna cost a thousand bucks. I know this is a tough issue for this truck, seems like a major issue for the entire line so I'm wondering how others have solved this problem. I'd like to keep this truck for a few more years since the motor is strong and the tranny is new, but if i can't fix it soon I'm gonna let it go. I just can't take the violent shaking.

did u know that an explorer can go between 180-195 km/h??? i bet it could go faster than that, but unfortunately it is kind of "electronically braked" at this speed. anyhow i think this car is not made for speeds like that.....

a friend of mine in the netherlands owns a xlt. the difference is, that the highclass has e.g. sunroof, console with outside temperature/compass...so all in all its better equiped.
by the way -> all officially explorers sold by ford germany have 4x4. and we don't have the 2-door version called sport.....
oh and of course there are differences between the us model and the eu model such as: lighting, km/h tachometer, ... and many, many more.

anyway i like my xp; it's a great car to drive and i have already been offroad serveral times. only got stuck once..but that's another story! :D

Hey all,

New to the forum, though the explorer isn't new to our family. I just inherited my Wife's '00 XLT. The car is in pretty decent shape. It needs a little bodywork on the lower skirts from hitting [something], perhaps some touch-up paint here and there, but at near 130k miles she's still running great. First order of business is to clean the upholstery since the fabric is starting to show a little grime, wear and tear. The car is a pretty high pedestrian zone so the carpets will need a little cleaning, but I'll get her to sparkle yet!

Hello all,
I am fairly new to this site. I have been looking it over for a couple days now anyway. Last NOV I purchased a '91 XLT (stock) from my brother. It sat in a fiend for a little over year before that, but the price was right, even with all of the repairs (rebuilt front end, new clutch(the works), rear main bearing, tires, new brakes all the way around). I still I have lot to do, but hey, for $400 I figured it was worth it. The only thing I would cosinder a "MOD" on it, is I changed the auto hubs to WARN manual hubs when I did the front end.

I finished the repairs nearly a week ago, and today, I finaly had the time to go and try it out. IT WAS GREAT!! I haven't had so much fun since I was in my teens with an old F150. It was my wifes first time "off road" and she was more than a little nervouse, but once she realized you can survive she started to have fun too. We didn't really go off road, we stayed to old rutted access roads and trails. It was this first time this thing had been driven on anything but pavement for a VERY long time, and the fact that I hadn't done anything like this for a VERY long, I decided to take it easy for the first run.

Now I am hooked and looking for whats next. The problem is that just many things you can do to an Explorer, it can be hard to figure out where to start.

Thanks for having such a great site. I will be back regularly :)

Hey everyone, just discovered this forum. My wife won a 2005 Explorer 4x2 on "The Price Is Right" TV Show and we're going to pick it up later today. Interestingly enough, when you win a car you take it as MSRP. If you want to upgrade your very basic car, it is MSRP for MSRP. To upgrade to leather or 3rd row seating is expensive as we would have to upgrade to an XLT plus options.

I have been sniffing around the forum here and there for the past couple of months and thought I'd finmally say hi. I'm from lovely Sydney, Australia. I have a 99 Explorer which I bought in January and I am looking at doing some mods, so have plenty of questions to ask.

I have been 4wding for about 10 years, first started in an '84' Suzuki Sierra, (which most of you know as a Samuri) and progressed onto owning about 4 different Sierras (all modified), 1 Suzuki Vitara (Sidekick, I think) and a couple of Nissan Patrols (84 and 89). Now I have the Explorer.

Any ideas as to what the sypmtoms of lifter noise is? or what could it be? I remove spark plug#1 and the noise goes away.

Hard starting. Slight engine knock could be from low octane fuel? oxygen sensor may also need replacing? Figured it also may be rod bearing going? I dont want to drive it if it will damage engine any further. Remove spark plug#1 it goes away the sound. Any ideas or have i figured it out myself almost? ;) What octane fuel is best for this truck?

Hello, and welcome. Not sure what to tell you about the ODB codes..

But as for the engine knock.. If it goes away when you remove one of the plug wires or plugs, it's quite likely that you're getting rod knock, which indicates a problem with the bearings on that connecting rod. Usually not a good sign. :-(

However, if you catch it early, it can be easily overhauled/rebuilt. No easy way out of this one though. :-(

Hi,
My name is Bud LaMonica. I am a chemist from Chattanooga, TN. I own an '92 F-150 2wd, '02 Montero 4x4 AWD, and '02 Audi A-4 quattro. I think that this web site is excellent. I need some unbiased opinions about this most hilarious event. 2 weeks ago my wife and I were running at a local track. My brother in law was watching a womens softball game at a ball field behind the track. The next thing I know, my wife and I see this guy in an Explorer drive through the fields towards us where the bull dozers have been scraping to build a new parking lot, and he gets stuck. We were making fun of him under our breath until we looked closer and it turns out that it was my FATHER IN LAW! And he must have been showing off, because my mother in law was with him and she was embarrassed. He hung the frame on a lump and the tires weren't touching. To top it off, an elderly man who lives near by walked outside and gave him a lecture on how not to get stuck and how to get unstuck. I know that it added insult to injury, and since my father in law never does dumb stuff and always makes fun of every one else, we had to rub it in big time. He has about a '96 or so with awd/4wd. But we teased him that my wife's stock Montero could've gone up or down or across all that stuff in either forward or reverse and with her driving it and with out trouble. But, come to think of it, It probably could have.
I like Ford Explorers. I want to build up a really good 4 x 4. I'm not allowed to mess up my wife's Montero. I'm an exceptional welder metal worker also. But, I don't really know much about what the best platform to start with is. Now for the unbiased part. Could anyone tell me what brand or model would be good or cheap to obtain. I guess you could say I'm also an amatuer Ford mechanic, as anyone who has ever owned one has to be..HA..HA..HA. I want to do mild rock crawling. That is getting popular around here. Maybe, the easiest thing to do is point me towards a specific build-up that I can look at on this web site. I would also like someone to give me the reasons that they think that the Explorer is the best. Please only real mechanical reasons, not because my Daddy was a Ford man. Incedently, my Dad always had Chevies. :exporange

Hello people :) Im new to this site and so far im very impressed with the wealth of information here. A little about myself and my explorer, I never thought i would ever own a ford but in 2001 I bought a 95 taurus SHO and relized at that point there is no single brand name that makes all great vehicals or all bad vehicals because I love my SHO and still have it with 180K! Anyway about 3 months ago I relized I needed a higher cargo capacity vehical and went SUV/truck hunting. The ford explorer stuck out from the others for a few main reasons. 1) The standard equip on the XLT was great along with the modification future options after a little research I came to the conclusion the 4.0L had alot of untapped potential and had the capabilty for alot of moddification(I can never leave any vehical stock after all!) and 2) the price for 12K I got a vehical with 4 wheel drive leather all the power goodies and 49K miles on it. SO I bought it.
Well Im really enjoying my purchase and with very minor mods Ive already gotten the MPG over 22mpg avg and a few extra ponys where found.

Im very glad to have found this site and all you experienced explorer gear heads :)

Hello, My name is Don and since I just got my wife another vehicle, I have acquired her 94 xlt. Gears are already turning on ways to modify it. First thing I want to do is lift it and put some 33's under it, then go on from there. Even my daughter, who's almost 6, is getting excited about it because I told her that she could help me work on it. My son will probably be trying to join in on the fun even though he's going on 3. Glad I found this site and have a place to ask any questions that I may have.

I have been noticing that it seems to be driving a bit hard while one the highway and I want to rule out a possible transmition problem. I just bought this truck this past weekend so I have no idea if this is normal or obnormal.

Well, bummer, someone had my username already. Anyway, around the RBV community, I'm known as Sarge. Long story on the name, but basically it's 'cuz I'm active duty Air Force. Anyway, I might possibly be getting an X, so I figured I'd come check out ya'lls site. I live in Alaska, near Anchorage right now. I have one year left up here.

Anyway, here's a few pics of my current rig. It's basically a scaled down X anyway. I swapped in a 4.0 from a 93 X, and the D35, and 8.8 from the same X, as well as the roof rack, and a few other minor things. You can see the build of it here: My BII Build Thread (http://broncoii.org/fordforum/index.php?showtopic=121)

Hello yall! I found this site doing a google search for explorer perormance parts. I am not really an Explorer junkie I just think they make the best family car around and I love having a 5.0 under the hood. My main hobby is Mustangs. I have a Reef Blue 93 LX 5.0 5spd, and a blk/blk 92 GT 5spd. My truck is Dark Wedgewood blue with medium gray leather. The truck has been awesome in terms of reliability and utility. I have added a K&N filter so far, but plan to do a Magnaflow exhaust, custom CAI ( I don't like the available CAI's), underdrive pulleys, and probably a programer. I am also considering black 18X9 Saleen replicas with black upper/lower billet grilles. Love the site yall.

We think the fire was started by the previous owner leaving a rag on the top of the engine to wipe his hands on after checking the oil. We was told that it was an electrical fire but we got to looking and didnt find anything that suggested that. The fire was just contained to that small spot it didnt go any lower than the valve covers. But it is now running and driving I have driven it around a little bit it needs radius arm bushings, door pins, a really good cleaning, and probly going to need the engine rebuilt eventually.

Thanks all for the warm welcome. This is actually for my wife, she drives the 1999 Explorer Sport 4x4 and loves it. We bought it on Ebay 2 yrs ago with 49000 miles and have had NO trouble with it until recent.
1.The high/low 4x4 lights flash at start up and periodically during driving. I haven't a clue on were to start looking.
2. My wife is looking to upgrade the sound system that I installed when we first purchased her truck and has put it on ebay if anyone is interested.

Uhhh...New old guy in town. Been through a few Ford pick-up's in my time but just purchased brand new 2005 Explorer Sport Trac after having my 2001 F-350 7.3 powerstroke diesel stolen little over a month ago, so why not try something new? (As long as it's a Ford.) Fell in love with it as soon as I drove it out the dealer. Feels like a crossbreed between a pick-up and an SUV, very nice ride and torquey to boot. (Just hope my old lady sticks to her 95 mustang GT and leaves my truck alone.) Probably the only member in Puerto Rico at this time though I have been all over Texas, Arizona, California, Lousiana, New York and New Jersey (Europe too while in the military) But enough bragging. Will keep posting as I discover more about my new wheels. I welcome any comments and / or advice from all you Explorer owners. Really like what I've seen on this site so far. Glad to be part of this community.Take care and "vaya con dios" out there on the open road.

The flashing lights mean something is wrong with the 4x4 system. Usually not major. I had the same problem. I just disconnected the battery for a few minutes. Never saw the lights again after that. The dealership can tell you exactly what it is if the battery thing doesn't work.

Find the transfer case motor. Small electric motor on the rear of the transfer case. Have someone start pushing the 4x4 HIGH button while you tap on the electric motor with a small hammer. Tap it, don't hit it. It should engage. Ford dealership taught me that trick. The small motor sticks because it is gummed up. Take it off and clean it sometime when you get a chance.

hi, my name is Poul, i'm from seattle, just got 96 xlt awd v8 to do some offroading and forest exploration, my 01 mustang cobra is not good for that :)

so far works great, minus few minor issues. and to think i almost bought new h3 hummer for ten times the money, hehehe.

one issue i have is a knocking sound during acceleration. i am told it's a leak in the exhaust manifold, and there is no need to fix it if i can live with sound. what do you experts think?

another issue is that i have to press on breaks really hard; i am not sure if it's a problem with this track, or do they all have tough breaks?

and, i need to change half the lightbulbs under instrument cluster, but i've already found the thread :)

great site!

Hello, I'm Andy. I've owned a '91 Eddie Bauer Edition for about three and a half years. It has been a great vehicle. Occassionaly over the years I would check out this forum for advice. Well two weeks ago I drove my Explorer into some deep stream water trying to get out to a beach here, and it got stuck. It was in the water for about an hour before someone pulled me out. I am trying to figure out how to get the car running again and get all the water out. I plan to post more on this in the appropriate thread tomorrow morning.

This Explorer is probably lost to me. But I plan to buy another. I think they are great vehicles. Always been reliable and there are so many of them they are not expensive at all to buy used. I think most people look at Explorers as gas hogs. But that is not the case. With 136k miles on the engine and no rebuilding at all, I got 21.5 mpg consistently on long freeway drives, which I need to do regularly for work. That is not bad mileage at all.

Everything that needed replacing on this Explorer I did myself: starter, alternator, AC pump, and oil changes have always been super easy.

Well, I am probably not telling you anything you don't already know. I look forward to conversing with you and getting advice on what to do with my recently submerged Explorer and what to look for when I go out to buy a used one.

Andy

what's up people. I'm 22 and from North Carolina. My first truck was a 88 ranger, which i loved. I then got a hand me down 91 explorer xlt from my mom and brother. My brother had a lot of fun in it and did a good job of raging it out. i had it about a year before it died but i kept it in hopes of one day restoring it. I then bought a 93 eddie bower explorer that i drove for a year and a half before someone cut in front of me and I total it. I should be getting a hefty settlement from that. Anyways i was first thinking of buying a new f-250. But now with my love of my 91 xlt I want to restore and make it the hottest 4x4 on the road. I don't know much about this so i look forward to any advise. :exporange

Ok... here I am... I know squat about this truck 'cept it's a '97 V6 4x4 auto/OD w/AC two door sport model. 'Got it at Carmax with 60,300 miles on 'er. White over silver with gray leather interior, 6 CD cassette... most of the bells 'n whistles I guess. Used to be a fleet vehicle in Kansas. Absolutely clean. Seems to have some grunt... better than the Magnum I rented recently. (whutta pig!) It will remain stock 'cept for a few things like in-track window vent guards 'n small convex mirrors I ordered this morning. Since it's goin' to AZ shortly... what t-stat is recommended and what weight oil?

I wanna know what the rear gear ratio is... (for beginners). Also... why it has lighter 'n no ashtray? Where can I get an ashtray for this truck? This will be my daily driver as my other truck is modified way past daily driver use (2000 Dodge Dakota R/T 5.9)

So I have a '99 Ford Explorer XLT AWD V8. Its all stock, and I was thinking of doing some stuff as far as mods go. Any suggestions on what to do or what to not do? Please let me know because I see all of these early 90's lifted and what not but no late 90's like mine. I would like some suggestions before I perform any major changes to my vehicle because it is nice now, but could be better I think. rynobell@hotmail.com Thanks.

Hey Everyone!

Looks like a great site! I joined to help my girlfriend with her 02 XLT. I'll be looking around for help with some of the issues she's currently ignoring. ;)

As you can see from the sig, I'm not a newbie to Ford. Been using the 95 Tbird as my daily driver now for almost 3 years. Have owned 3 other Ford products in the past.

The 01 Sebring Convertible is my weekend/long trip toy, only in warm months, so it has been put away for the winter.

The 89 Daytona is a fun car I picked up on Ebay, and it does great pitching in when the Tbird needs work or I need a mini-pickup.

Look forward to learning a lot about the Explorer!

If you have a Sebring convertible, check out this site: SebringClub.net (http://www.sebringclub.net)

Will post again soon, lots of questions.

Hi, i'm new here. I have searched all over this site and the internet trying to find out what is wrong with the OD in my A4LD. It's weird, the OD works untill the tranny comes up to operating temp, like in about a mile then it is like there's no OD at all...Looking at what i have read on this site which is the best Ranger / Explorer site on the net. It looks like it might be either the servo or a solinoid but i'm just not sure..I drive a long way everyday and it worries me because without OD the 2.9 is running at around 3000 - 3500 RPM'S on the interstate not to mention the fuel milage sucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i cannot afford to take this thing to the tranny shop..Anyway, Thanks in advance for any info you guys can provide. :us:

Hey all, new to this forum. Just got '99 Explorer XLT because of kids. Couldn't fit them in my '92 F-150 anymore. They're also the reason I don't have the bike I spent a winter and spring building, and the reason I don't have my '93 Mustang anymore. Oh well, guess it comes with the territory. All my toys are gone and I'm lookin for things to do to this thing I have now.

I'm new to the forum. My 98 EB I've had since new. Only minor repairs. I'm a retired chem. engineer. Have restored a 57 Chev (2dr HT), a 34 ford, and 59 Chev truck in my time. My Exp has 126k and I'm beginning to wonder how long I can trust it to be dependable for long trips. So...... looked for a forum to start gathering some real world info. Some things that I can do myself or inexpensively. My Exp has the tow pkg. But never towed anything. It has the 4.10 axle and 16" wheels. I assume it has an aux. trans cooler. Hopefully this will lend some longevity to the tranny life. I had it flushed at 85k. Looking foward to reading all the posts. Adios, Iowaboy.

I have recently bought a 1991 4WD Explorer. My daily driver is a Corvette, so I needed something to get me through nasty winter weather. I bought the X from a guy at my work. He had it sitting in his yard for 6 months because of a brake problem and it would not go into 4WD. I bought the truck for $500.00. I replaced the Rotors, Calipers and Pads in the front for about $150.00! I couldn't believe how cheap this stuff is! I also replaced a leaking Heater Core in under 30 minutes for $16.00! This is a great truck so far...Then I tackled the 4WD problem. I came here and looked up a thread that had pictures and a complete walk through of fixing the bushing in the shift motor. That was the problem, I fixed it, and the 4WD now works great!! Thanks to all! I am really likeing this truck so far!! (about 100 miles so far)

Only a short few weeks ago I got my first explorer.. it's a 1991 XLT, 4x4, 5speed.

I also have a 1996 Chevrolet s-10, stock as the day is long. Don't get me wrong, for what it is, the lil s-10 is a hell of a truck. It's got an appropriately sized nutsack for it's class. It puts those little mazda 6's to shame, and can haul a pretty decent load (had up to 3/4 of a ton in there at one point)

However, man, I didn't know what I was missing... or maybe I did. I always wanted a 4x4, but I was really looking into a 98 or better s-10 4x (zr2) but then I found my explorer.. sitting lonely in a parking lot, surrounded by gutted and smacked rice burners. It was stupid, but I could almost hear it begging me to take it home. So I did. A few hundred bucks later (yes, well under 1000) it's driveable again. Even with the amount of work it'll need, it still never fails to change my impressions of it. Infact, just recently I wrote about an experience I had towing another, much larger truck that was in bad shape and couldn't move under its own power. At first I was thinking.. "ah, this explorer will be great for winter driving. I'll prolly sell it come summer."
Then the explorer mercilessly yanked that f250 around like it was a rag doll. (Wish I had made a video of it, it was reallllly ####ing cool.)

It was then I knew I couldn't sell it, I had to go for it and get it into some trails and start to learn about doing all that.

So thats where Im at. Im starting from the bottom I can tell you. Lots of stuff needs to be replaced (someone started parting out my baby before I got it.) and its going to take awhile. But I think with the great people here and some part hunting luck I should be exploring trails sooner than later.

As for me, I have some common sense car knowledge, there isn't much that scares me, except perhaps, a lack of situation specific knowledge.. (ie, getting a tranny off, then on reassembly finding out I have 5 extra bolts or something like that..) but I see that all as simply needing to learn how this particular truck works. Im not someone who's above using the mud on a trail as a sled for undercarriage work. :-)

So, thats about it, thanks for this great forum.. oh.. btw, does anyone know if window decals are available with this sites logo/address? I see its a choice on the "how did you find us" poll..

See you in the forums

Hi everyone,

Im a newbie to this site and have a 91 explorer xlt 2wd. I've recently moved from sunny california to beautiful northern arizona. I live in Prescott Valley and have lots of off-road country surrounding me. I did do some light off roading in my explorer in cali but nothing serious. I really like the pre-runner look and have already ordered parts to that effect. The problem Im having is finding a good lift kit for my explorer and one that has new radius arms. Does anybody know of any kits that come with radius arms or does anybody know if I can use a Ranger lift from the same year? Arent the suspensions the same? I've been told that its the same frame underneath so why cant I use a Ranger lift? I also want to do a spring over axle conversion as well. Im looking to do some serious off roading and jumping. Can someone please let me know.

Thanks for all your help

My name is Darius Warne I am from Sparta, Michigan and suburb of Grand Rapids.

I own a 2002 Explorer Sport. White, Leather, Moonroof, Premium Sound.

So far I have tinted the windows to match the rear, added a Clarion CD player, Sirius radio, Nifty mats, K&N FIPK, JET performance chip, and a MAC cat-back exhaust. I also have a set of 265/70/17 Bridgestone Revo A/T tires ready to go on some new rims in the spring.

I may lift the vehicle this winter still but I am baffled to which lift to buy and what works with my year and modle. Thats what lead me here!

Take Care,

Darius

Also just joined the site today. I have a 93 Explorer XLT 4wd. Currently has 120K miles in it and has always done me well. It is still in great shape and I am now thinking of putting a small suspension lift on it. Only major repairs is a new tranny a couple of months ago, and a new shift motor for the 4wd.

I also own a 2002 Jeep Wrangler Sport with a lift, winch and 31 in MTR tires. I am on a few other Jeep Forums with the same screen name.

Both vehicles are DD's.

I'm new to explorers. I bought my '93 XLT 4x4 in November. It's currently in the shop-oil pump. I had some uppervalve noise, so I tried some seafoam. It seemed to help- for a while. AND THEN. the oil pressure was fluctuating drastically. The needle was all over the place! I drove it the last 80 miles home of a 350 mile trip like this. My mechanic's got the tranny, oilpan, and bearing covers pulled. The farthest (from the pan/pump) bearing looks brand new. I'm still holding my breath.

Hi all,

I just bought a 98 Explorer Sport a couple weeks ago, and I love driving it. It's super clean and has great power (4.0L SOHC engine), but I am already having some minor issues (which I hope don't might turn out to be bigger problems). I did some light skimming over the forum archives and I found some useful information, but I was hoping to get some replies on my problems.

Tranny: I think it's common to X's, but I am experiencing a shudder under acceleration when between 30-40 mph. One of the local Ford techs said to switch the O/D off and see if that helps. If that doesn't help, then he said to drain the torque converter, fill it back up, start up the X to run the new fluid through the system, drain it again, and then fill it back up. Does this make sense to anyone else, or is this a sign of bad things to come (i.e. new torque converter)?

Electrical: I am having, from what I've read so far, the notorious dying radio display issue. I read how to fix this (if you know your way around electronics/soldering, you're halfway there). I may attempt the fix, but I am planning a complete stereo install this summer, so I may just deal with it for now. My dash light indicators do not seem to be working after startup. When the dash panel lights up in the run/accel position, I can see the 4WD, O/D, brake, other lights, but these indicators never seem to light up while I am driving. I thought the 4WD light was always on to tell you if you are in 4WDhi, 4WDlo, or flashing...mine doesn't do anything. I have no idea if my O/D is on or off as it doesn't seem to be working either. The parking brake light rarely works. It sounds like a bad GEM to me. If so...anyone have a clue as to how much this unit costs? Does anyone else agree or have another suggestion?

Suspension: The rear is sagging really bad on my X. I have looked into AAL and shackles and that route is definitely cheaper than replacing the leaf packs with a new set. I have checked out Eaton ($260 upgrade kit w/2 leafs per side) and some other places. I was wondering if the AAL/shackle solution is like putting a band aid on a sucking chest wound. It'll be a daily driver for me, mostly on highway/local streets, and some light to moderate trail riding. I don't have the garage or work area to do any work where I live. Anyone have a suggestion on which route I should take? I would like to do a 2.5" - 4" lift at some point, but I just don't have the $$ right now, so that can probably wait. I just want to be rid of the sag and gain an 1" of lift over stock if possible.

Hi all, just joined and wanted to say hello. I just bought a 93 XLT 4x4 about a month ago. Nothing done to it yet, but planning on doing something with it. 120k with trans rebuilt about a year and a half ago according to maintanance records. Just had servos and modulators replaced because she was not shifting in the morning when she was cold. Runs pretty good now. Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I recently needed a new "work car" as my old '94 Tracer (Escort) was nearing 200,000 miles and needed more work that it was worth. A local lot where I know the owner pretty well mentioned he had a '94 Eddie Bauer Explorer coming in he could give me a great deal on. Normally when a used car salesman offers me a "good deal" I start worrying but he has been honest with me in the past..
I wasn't totally sold on the explorer at first as I knew the fuel mileage would be much worse than the old hoopdee but it seemed basically solid with some repairs needed...and the price was right!
I have had it for a few weeks now and am really becoming a fan! A couple things I was wondering about....
When I first bought it the 4x4 button didn't do anything... after removing the dashboard for a different problem (heater switch) I noticed the 4x4 switch harness was disconnected! I plugged it in and now when I press it I get a few clicks and whirrs from the back and seemingly the transfer case, then the light comes on and the "4x4" indicator also comes on. If I am moving, the road noise also changes slightly. Unfortunately, the one time I had a chance to try it I had the right rear tire on ice and the tire just spun! It didn't appear that the fronts (on dry pavement) were helping at all.. also I assumed there would be some help from the left rear tire... (posi?)
This is my first 4x4 so I am pretty ignorant about these things, and there was no owners manual with the truck (I now have one on the way...tnx to Ebay)
Also, sometimes when I hit a bump there is a fairly loud thump coming from what sounds like under the drivers side door... and backing from a parking place there can be a fairly loud thump from the front suspension (ball joint?)

Thanks for any help you can give me,
Tony

Low circuit voltage is probably due to excessive resistance in the circuit. Check all the wires for corrosion, fraying, bare spots, pinched points, etc. Also check for a good ground. Make sure the ground straps from engine to frame or engine to firewall/fender are there and not too corroded. If the egr valve is not getting enough voltage, it will not open all the way and will limit the airflow.-Tom

Just wanted to say thanks for the welcome and to introduce myself. I am from Georgia (Atlanta Metro) and I own a 1994 XLT. It has 174,000 miles and is painted in the teal green color (photos later).

This is by far the best and most informative site for "X" owners that I have seen. I am proud to be a member.

I am about to hand my X over to my son (almost 16) in about 1 year so that he can start driving. What suggestions do any of you have regarding a tune up and anything else regarding safety?

What a great place for FORD folks to gather and share.

Looking forward to entertaining myself with this site. Especially on bad weather days when I can not get out Rock Hop!

Which here in Arizona is very seldom. ;) Right Rick?

Best Regards all,

I have a 1994 Eddie Brauer Explorer.
The problem is: I put my vehicle in 4x4 and NOTHING HAPPENS.
The front shaft (from the 4x4 case to the front pumpkin) spins.
This was noticed on a lift and I found out the hard way when I got stuck in the snow.
NOW I would like to know what the problem is.
I heard the hubs could be the problem from a newly made mechanic.
What I would like is a second opinion from a real experience mechanic on what the problem might be.
Thanks,
ERIC

Hi everybody, I just sent a note out to one of the other people on line and thought I'd send it out to the group to see what suggestions you've all got. I live in Illinois and have emissions testing I need to pass. I went today and failed. Below are the codes that I received:

Ready Status: Not Ready
CODES:
CAT Not Ready
CATHEAT Not Supported
EVAP Not Ready
AIR Not Supported
AC Not Supported
O2S Ready
OS2Heat Ready
EGR Ready

Any suggestions on how I can get my Explorer to pass ('97 XLT 4.0 SOHC). Thanks in advance to the group, any help is appreciated.

Hey, nothing to be ashamed of with 2 wheel drive. I have a '90 Ranger, 175K on it when the oil pump went, of course I didn't know it at the time, so I drove it about 50 miles with no oil pumping. You guessed it, NOT GOOD! I loved that old truck, it was on its original trans (stick/4 speed w/ OD) and clutch, never changed it out. In the snow, welllllll, it was fun, just put a little weight in the back. When starting out on slippery roads, put it in 2nd, ease off the clutch and off you go. God I miss that truck! Man, tears to the eye. Thanks, Thanks a lot for making me think of my old friend! :-)

Hi,

I am new to this forum, and I also have only been an Explorer owner for about 3 days now. My wife and I had to upgrade from a 2000 Grand Am since
we have baby # 2 due this spring and we got tired of trying to decide between hauling groceries or the baby stroller in the trunk. We looked hi and low for a SUV and I did tons of research. We tested some Jeeps (great for young single people, they have no room in back seat) and 4-runners are way overpriced, so we tried an Explorer, and low and behold it has everything my wife and I both wanted. She wanted it to look good, and I wanted something reliable that I could do some minor modding to. So we traded our car and a very small amount of cash for a 1998 XLT 4.0L 4wd. We love it, I thought I would miss the car, but I am way to excited about the XLT to even care.

Cheers, and hope to see you all on the boards.

Hi gang,
Just registered to the site tonight. I hope I am posting this correctly.
I found this site while trying to find a solution to my 2000 xlt radio display problem. I love the site! Too much thinks my wife :D. In due time I will learn how to post and reply to the forums. I am not too computer literate. I am still figuring out what "threads" are. Hope to check in often. Once again, Great Site!!

Hi Nice site, I can't wait to really dig in. I've had my '02 xlt since it was new. originally it was bought for my city-girl wife who didn,t believe in dirt. After a few years in the Great Northwest she has gone "Native" and keeps asking why can't we lift it and put some decent rubber under it, " like all these other trucks". :fire: I have the same question. One of the reasons I bought it was because of the full independent suspension , now I hardly find shocks other than stock . Whats the deal?

03-21-2006, 01:25 PM
Hi
So you are from poland. I am happy to meet you.
An Explorer burns a large amount of fuel, compared to other vehicles available.
I'm just being honest, but about 23 MPG is about the best you could ever achieve, under normal easy driving conditions. Some members here report better fuel economy than that, however they have performed many modifications to thier vehicles.
The realistic number would be more like 17-20 mpg at best(15-17 being what I see most often in explorers)
Good luck
Jon

I was reffered to this site from carstereos.org because i was asking there on how to set up the audio in my '05 Explo EB. Anyway, i am an active member of FCP (fordclubph.com) where we have more Lynx and Focus members than trucks and SUVs. Its a welcome thing for me to be with fellow Explo owners.

Hey, I'm Chris from Taber, Alberta, Canada. It's nice to find a community like this.
I've just recently picked up an Explorer, 1999, XT. We needed something bigger than my old Saturn. It's in good shape other than the rear wiper problem that I've already fixed thanks to the site, and a burnt out cig lighter socket which I'll be digging into later.

Cruisin' the web tonight looking for some sites with info on the 97 explorer sport I just picked up Sunday. Lo and behold the first site I find is this awesome site! Of course I just had to join. I don't know how much help I can be as I am just your basic backyard mechanic but I am willing to try. I've already had the rear axles out of my new toy to replace bearings and seals and as I do plan to "play" some with it I am sure I will have some questions that I am sure some of the more knowledgable folks that I have already seen posting on here may be able to help with. Thanks in advance for any help. I'm off to see what the "Elite Explorers" is all about!

Scott Hogan from Victoria Point in Brisbane in Queensland in Australia, wow that was a mouthful.
Will be taking delivery of a Brazil built, silver 2005 plated XLT (still brand new) in a week or so. Oz Ford have stopped importing them as our Locally built Ford Territory AWD has taken their sales away, this is one of the last 3 new cars in the country. Very upsetting for me as I have to trade my 2003 XR6 Turbo in for it. My wife is expecting our 4th child and we need more seats so the sedan is going, much tears flowing, Aussie guys do cry, over cars anyhows

Hello all,
Been reading alot of threads for about a year now, but this is the first time I'm writing anything. I have to thank the guys who share so much of thier knowledge. The dealers are no help, and most of the custome shops are very neggative about what you can do . After reading some threads I broke down : TT lift Warrrior shackles, 31" tires, Helper leaf, cut open my air filter box and added a K&N drop in filter, and last I did the stock fog light switch mod. Now my Mounty is the way Frd should have made it from the start. And after all this, she still gets groceries. Thanks agin for all the great addvise, Gino

Hello all,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a 32 year old graphic artist in the LA area and will soon be buying a '99 Eddie off my parents in July. They just picked up a new Aviator and offered me the Explorer at a really good price. Anyway, it's basically 100% stock but I've already gathered a lot of info from the audio forum on doing a HU swap and ditching the stock one with the faulty display problem... thanks for all the info so far.

Hey all, my name is Pete. I have a 2000 Sport 4x4, and I love it to death. Recently, I did about 3000 miles worth of towing (my motorcycle, trailer, and the entire back stacked floor to ceiling with parts and tools) as I traveled around on Air Force business. Truck performed without a single problem for the entire trip, which was from Dayton, OH to Wichita Falls, TX, then back home to Dayton and back to Wichita Falls (sans trailer), then to Phoenix, AZ, and finally from Phoenix to Dayton. Ran like a top the whole time, I was really impressed.
I've lurked on this forum before, looking for information for mods, and after spending 4 hours looking at stuff on here yesterday, I've finally decided to joing. Looking forward to learning a lot and improving my Ex!

I own a 99' Explorer XLT SOHC V6, and although I'm not mechanically inclined whatsoever, between this site and a Haynes manual I've taken care of some things that I wouldn't have even considered in the past. After registering about 48 hours ago (although I've browsed the forums a couple times in the past few months), I though I'd show some appreciation via donating the 20 bucks for Elite Explorer. Nevermind the extra's that come with it. If you're like me, and need the wealth of knowledge from the many knowledgeable members here, I'd almost feel guilty if I didn't contribute. In other words, thanks very much to the owner, and the many members on this site for all the information/how to's etc. :chug:

Hi everyone. My name is Bryan. I'm 43 years old. Thats only 6 in dog years. :p And I'm from Kentucky. I don't have an Explorer as of yet. I'm going to look at one tomorrow. Its got a lot of miles, but seems to have been well maintained. So I'll just have to wait and see.

This is not my first 4x4. I've owned a 96 Cherokee and I have an 88 1/2 Suzuki Samurai. I'm looking at the Explorer because the "war department" has forgotten how to drive a manual. And we need something to travel in comfortably. I haven't told her about the outing in Attica,IN yet. :D She has it in her head that an Explorer is NOT a rock crawler or Mud Beast. Give me time to change her mind on that one. :fart:

Well, I've rambled on enough. Ya'll take care and wish me luck tomorrow.

Ok, yes I never thought I would be joining a Truck (SUV) forum but here I am.

I have (original owner) a cream-puff '91 Explorer EB 4x4. She has only 82K miles and have religously kept the oil changed at every 2500 to 3000 miles along with all other maitenance prescribed. Its a great truck if you take care of it. Oh yes, I have been through several sets of radius arm bushing, who hasn't! About 8 years ago I had new AC lines and seal installed. At the time the Compressor was starting to "tic" louder. But here I am some 8 yrs later and the system still works most of the time.

Current problem is in the heat of the day when I call for AC the system is intially blows good air but then the compressor trips out. The cooling fan/cultch is not working properly I just learned today! I have sourced a new fan blade and fan clutch and it comes in at about 50.00. On ebay, I can get a brand new compressor for about 185.00. And then there is the dryer conversion from old style freeon to the new stuff etc, etc!

So far with 82K miles and 15 years old I have replaced the following;

A full set of AC lines and seals
4 sets of radius bushing
Driver/passenger door elec window motors
New side mirrior control switch
Rebuild Transmission, no I have not towed anything!
Change out those cheap auto frt hubs for new manual Warren hubs
New T'stat cooling
New brakes and frt rotters
New shocks at 32K miles

The List of things to fix are;

Gas tank guage
AC System not cooling full time
Fan Blade/fan clutch
Power steering is leaking fluid, don't know where but it sure is leaking!

Any help out on the following;

AC system not cooling full time
Leaking power steering sys
Gas gauge

Thanks in advance for any suggestion on the above 3 items!

Hi all! I am a new member obivously. Anyways, i have a 1999 Explorer XLS with 72,000 miles. I just got rid of my 1997 Ford F150 so i am no stranger to Fords. I took my stereo out of my truck so i am already planning a few mods to do. First off, gotta change the oil tomorrow then maybe new running boards. One thing, does anyone have any reccomendations on speakers. Also, this vehicle has PATS, how much does an aftermarket remote entry system cost?? Thanks for the help...Hope to be around for a while.

I don't get it until saturday but you can click on my signature to see it.
I will be interested in a bar for the front end to add lights.

I will be interested in hearing from you guys to see what can be done about
my rusty rockers (no other rust on the truck)

I would like to add a sunroof - but I do not know if that can be done..

I would be interested in lifting it two inches and getting 31x10.5 BFG AT Ko's on it.. but that might not fit. (not sure if it is lifted now..looks loike it but how do I know?)

I am in Vancouver BC Canada

^^ If it's a 4x4, you should be able to fit 31s on it at stock height. Every truck is different though. Search the site for F-150 coil spacers and some warrior shackles if it isn't lifted in the rear already.

Welcome to the site.

I'm brand new to this site as well. My name is Mike. I drive a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0L and am doing something very peculiar with it. I'm working on making it an extremely fast naturally aspirated beast but have kept the body and wheels and everything stock to keep the sleeper look. I'm looking forward to getting help and helping others and this site seems to be the place to do it. I will talk to you all soon!!!

Welcome to the site. Pyle offers some good speakers, other than that, i've had good luck with JVC speakers. As for the PATS, im not sure as my truck is to old to have remote entry. Good Luck. :burnout:

Just want to say hi, i am new an i like what i see so far. Cool site. I don't own an explorer, but i do own a 88 bronco 2 v6 fuel injection 4wd manuel. I love offroading, our family as a whole would never be caught on the road with a 2wd or sedan. So it comes natural. ONE THING I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS A FORUM FOR BRONCOS IN GENERAL BECAUSE I SEE STUFF FOR RANGERS AN THEY ARE ALOT ALIKE. GREAT SITE ANY HOW......

Hello, name's Steve. I just bought a 94 Explorer Eddie Bauer for the wife yesterday. Actually, it's really for our 4-month old son. Wife's 86 Toyota pickup and my 85 Bronco II aren't the most practical vehicles for constant loading/unloading of a carseat (same goes with the 67 Mustang and 67 Cougar GT we have). Anyway, I got the 94 cheap because it's got a blown head gasket. I've got the engine torn down now, so hopefully it will be on the road within a week or so.

One thing you might want to check on your air conditioning compressor is the electro-magnetic clutch assembly. There is just a single 10mm bolt holding the clutch plates together and often the center bearing of the compressor leaks just a little bit over time and gets grease on the clutch plates. Easy to remove and give a good cleaning to with some degreaser and perhaps a light scuffing with some fine sand paper and reassemble the two plates back with the single 10mm bolt.
The next check for me would be the freon charge in the system regarding the air conditioner working well.
I am not sure why you are thinking the clutch fan needs replacing, is the engine having cooling problems too?

I don't think anyone is going to read this, but if someone should happen to, I'm probably the youngest on this forum at 17, and I have a long way to go with my piece of c--p XLS '02. It's 4X2, 4.0L V6, and all it's got going for it is a brand new set of Bridgestone Duelers. I do offroad once every couple months, buuuut, my parents don't know about it... They think offroading is evil and deadly...our neighbor died offroading in his Jeep Cherokee not too long ago, so they're not real big on it. I know next to nothing about automotive, but I'm willing to learn. I guess one thing I'm wondering is if I've come to the right place for help, and by this i mostly mean advice.

Double Thumbs Up!!

Been lurking around the site on and off for awhile, and finally decided to register. I'm 39, live in IL and have a '91 Sport, 4" lift, 5spd, 33" Boggers, 5:13 gears and (temporarily) lunchbox lockers f/r. Future mods to include a custom winch bumper, sliders and cage for my wheeling pleasure and to protect my pretty features on rollovers. And yes, it is strictly a trail rig, so therefore a trailer queen.

Love the info the site provides, and look forward to eventually meeting some of the other members for wheeling.

Only gripe I have about the site is the color of the boards, being blue on blue, it makes it to damn hard to read for an old fart like me.

Hello. I was recently given an Explorer that has been in the family for the past 13 years. Its needs a little work inside and out, so I figured I'd join a forum where I could find people who could answer any questions I had.

This is a picture I took of it last year:

Hello, joined this forum on behalf of the wife. (It's actually her X ;) )
I've been a member of the Bonneville Club Forum for a while now and she wanted me to find something for her. (Translation; join the forum, keep her updated about upcoming events and get valuable tech advise for the upgrades) :D I checked out some of the other forums and this one seemed like the better choice.

So anyway, we live in Kensington, CT. we own a '97 XLT 5.0 AWD (along with a '98 Bonneville, my ride) The X has 194K miles on it all of which are ours. Owned it since it rolled out of the dealer's lot.

Current upgrades include: K&N conical filter, Accel coil packs, MSD plug wires, NGK V-Grove plugs, Ford Racing "shorty" headers, new Cat's,and a Walker Turbo Cat-Back exhaust. Drilled & slotted rotors w/ "GreenStuff" pads.

On-the-way: Jet power chip and a 180* T-stat.

Soon to be done: Edelbrock IAS shocks and a polyurethane bushing kit.

So, hello to everyone and I look forward to getting to know some of you. :exp:

Hello, I'm a new member but I've been visiting this sight for a while and I love it. My X is a 96 XLT V8 AWD 87k miles not many mods yet, CD player and amps, K&N, Tornado (not worth it to me) and muffler. It's my daily driver. The most work it gets is pulling my travel trailer 4000lbs and it pulls great. Future mods 3in bl, 31" tires (maybe 32's), air bag helper springs (for the towing) and shocks.
Thanks for a great sight.

Hi all!
Nice to find a forum like this.

Just bought a 1999 XLT.
I had a 1991 Explorer I bought new. Had it for 9 years and 147,000 miles.

Someone stole my wife's Dodge Stratus, so I had to find a replacement.
I missed my old Explorer so much!
The used car dealer practically was giving this one away so..... :)

Need help getting rid of a noise, a clunk.
I just got a 1998 Explorer Sport 4.0 sohc, 120,000 miles. The clunk seams to be coming from the rear suspension. You can only hear it when coming to a complete stop. It sounds like a set of golf club moving around in a trunk. If you come to a very easy pampered stop it will Not make the clunk.
I removed the spare tire. Not it.
Took it to local shop. Put up in the air, Test drove. No help.
Took to Firestone. Put up in the air, Test drove. No help.
Both could hear the noise, but couldn’t pin point it.

This is the last thing I need to do to get it in near mint mechanical shape. Got rid of two engine codes ( 02 sensors), door ajar light, rear wiper now work, rear hatch button is replaced so it can be locked and alarm works, got lumbar working in passenger seat, wired in new bulb to driving light, dash light, and found the code for the keyless entry. Found out nothing is wrong with the 4 wheel low (Just can’t use it unless the tires can slip)
But I need help more on this!

Hi all, I'm new to the whole thread and forum thing so forgive me if I screw this up royally or end up in the wrong forum.
My name is Myk, I own a 1998 base Explorer (No badges, prior to XLS), no mods, 4.0L OHV, 5spd 5R55E, 4X4.
I've owned Ford and Jeep all my life, and love the out doors and getting muddy. I've got 2 kids, (Son 8 and daughter 6) they love the mud too, my wife is another story, but I'm working on her. (hence the budget)
I was a Mechanic for Ford for 12yr until a car accident blew out my back, now I sit at a desk all day in front of a computer.
I joined this forum to find out what I can do to my truck that the retailers won't tell you. (example; add-a-leaf for 1998 4x4 Explorer.... NOT) I'm tired of trying to shop for parts for my Explorer just to be told not avail. and then I see all these 1998 Explorers with lifts, add-a-leafs, body lifts ect... :fire:
I want to know if there are a diff year leafs I can get from the wreckers to swap in and the add-a-leaf will work.
I want to know how to make a 1995 body lift kit work on my 1998, not why the manufactures left me out. I'll use hockey pucks if I have to but don't tell me it can't be done.
Anyway I'm getting on a rant.
So that's me in a nut shell, I want to build a truck on a budget and I want your help.

I have owned a 2000 model with the AWD and 5.0L (302 for us old guy's) for 2 years now, and just recently sold my 89 BII and bought another Explorer, a 93 model XLT. Yesterday purchased 1999 XLT AWD 5.0L V8 w/ 35k orig. mi. in CA for $7.9k.
Tow package, immaculate interior.
Original owner has maintained vehicle, and records, meticulously.
Used as commute vehicle 1999-2000, then only to tow boat to/from launch ramp at fresh water lake at start/end of boating seasons. Hence, low miles.
Orig owner decided to sell because lack of use does not justify keeping it.

Flying up S.F. area to take possession shortly. (Purchased based on e-mail.)

I can feel some of you readers smirking smugly...

We'll see.

The 1999 XLT has 5.0 Liters under the hood, same as my 1977 Early Bronco.
Do the math: 99XLT+77EB=10L

At 14, I parked dads 2wd GMC on a 4ft dirt mound in the back yard and have been addicted to climbing since. After 8 years of abstinence, I own a 93 "exploder"(as my friends say) sport and I no longer jones for the dirt. Although it is bone stock, save a larger set of tires, its limits are futher out there than you would expect. :us:If you lead, They will follow.

Hello, my name is Dave, I am new to the Explorer game...I have had my mustangs...But not a SUV. So any how...I am big in to VW's and knew there were forums out there for thoes...I knew there would be for this....And here I am...This place looks great!

The good's
I have a 1994 Explorer, that i just got...The body is in great shape...no rust, no dents...nice green paint. Tan interior...cloth...not clean, but on the way there. 4X4, Auto...Cd player, 4-door, 4.0....100k...I think it is good for miles. 31 inch tires....Aloys....

The bad....Well the tranny...it is a little funny....I'll post more about that AL4D in that DEPT.

I hope to gain alot from the forums...I have alot to offer! I am top notch with computers, custom interior's, car audio, multi-media, security-alarm, and wrencher...How can I help?

Hi, I'm the proud owner of an 88 ford bronco 11.
this was a gift back to me from my son, as he is not allowed to have an auto at his first year in college.
Being over 40,i remember when the ranger's/ bronco 11's first came out and purchased a new ranger in 84, so it was only natural to accept back the bronco 11.
I haven't had time to search the whole site out,but so far looks great.
just wanted to say hi and can't wait for the snow:D
Hope i didn't post in the wrong forum as i don't own an explorer, but i am keeping my eye out for one.

Hello all,
Everett from Richmond VA here and I am the owner of a Black 98 XLT V6 4X4. This is my second Explorer, the first was a 92 EB that got me to 330K miles before I traded for the 98. I have a bone stock truck, the only mods I have is moving the oil filter off of the engine to a spot on the frame and replacing the stock stereo and speakers with an XM desk and new speakers. I have 130K on this model and I am ready to mod up. I plan to get the X-spec suspension kit from Explorer Express, bigger brakes, larger wheels (20"), Volant intake, custome exhaust, etc. Any advice any of you have will be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to drop a quick post to introduce myself.

My name's Derek and I'm in Portsmouth, VA. I hail from Memphis, TN originally. I'm an Electronics Technician First Class in the U. S. Coast Guard. Enough about me.... lets get right down to the nuts and bolts:

I recently traded in my '04 Frontier for an '07 Nissan Quest 3.5S for my wife. Consequently, I inherited my wife's '99 4-door Explorer 5.0L as my primary means of getting from A to B. She has 128k miles on the clock (the TRUCK, not my wife :D ) but still runs strong. I haven't done any modifications to it, but I'm getting ready to beef up the somewhat bland factory audio system.

I'm basically here to learn all I can about the mechanics of the Explorer (preventative and corrective maintenance, performance tips, etc.). I'm no stranger to an engine bay or toolbox, but I know each vehicle/manufacturer has its quirks.... and I absolutely HATE to pay someone else to do the things I can do myself

So with that, here's a big hello to all of you.

I just wanted to say hello and let people know a little about me.. I have just bought a '93 explorer limited, with all the toys and this thing looks like a new truck. It's a beaut, and I am looking forward to some pleasant interchanges on this web site. I am located in Vancouver BC but spend time on Vancouver Island helping a friend manage his PUB

Aloha folks,

Nope, not from Hawaii though... Connecticut.

Just your average ordinary eX owner, I'm an electrician and a fire tech... low voltage, etc etc.

Just recently aquired a 98 Sporty and I really like it... it was basically something temporary, until I find myself a decent Ford SD 350 Diesel, but... I may just have to keep this puppy around for a while!

I've found many things quite interesting here already, all helpful indeed. Like the project I'll be doing this weekend with the swaybar links, torsion bars and adjusters.

Now, if I can only get my Pioneer head unit in... damn factory amps! - That's another project, LOL!

Anyway, thanx to all of you who make this forum what it is, entertaining, easy going and most of all, informative.

-Cheers,

TC - 'CTHighVoltage'

Hey all. I was sent to this place by a guy over at the MN12 T-Bird Cougar boards, www.tccoa.com. I've been driving a 1993 Cougar 5.0, all tweaked out, since '96. She's got a lot of miles behind her (235K), and a lot more miles in front of her, and has been wearing the laurels of both show car and daily driver/workhorse very well. But I decided to give her a break, got her a new car cover, and I'm letting her sleep till the world calls on her again.

In August my folks were getting an 06 Eddie Bauer Explorer, and they were going to trade in their 97 Eddie Bauer. I picked up the 97 for the trade in price, and now I have a daily driver/workhorse that actually has room in the back end to do what I need it to do. A few coats of polish with cutting pads, and she came looking like new again. Now to tweak something else....

I'm not planning on doing too much to it, as it is my daily beast. Mabye J-mod the transmission (these 97 5.0 AWD's have a 4R70W in them, right?), stainless brush guard, and lighted Lund moonvisor. Just to make it look like mine.

Nothing too crazy on this one I don't think. Some rims definately, maybe something that will get me a little better gas mileage. I am sure I will be bitten by the mod bug though and do all kinds of things to her in the end.

hello all
I am new to the site and also new to explorers.
my name is Jeff and i am from putnam ct.
I never thought i would buy another ford. I bought a 2000 e-150 in 01 for work and hated it. it had lots of problems. anyway i found a 1997 xlt v8 for $2200.00 in great condition and fell in love with it so i bought it. This rig is mint inside and close to mint out. It had one owner before me who was anal about servicing it (I have all the records). Anyway i plan on doing many mods to it this spring but before i do i need to fix one problem that concerns me.
When i am going up hills light on the throttle it seems like the tranny shimmys a tiny bit. If i give it some throttle it stops. The overdrive switch does not work so i am guessing its stuck in overdrive (the o/d off light isnt lit). So my question is do you think this (the shimmy) is happening because i am in o/d when i shouldnt be or is it possibly a more serious tranny problem. If it is just the switch any help on how to fix it would be great. also if its something in the tranny that i could fix myself i would love some advise. I am very hands on but never worked on a tranny before.
thanks in advance
jeff

Hello everyone. I just recently purchased my 2001 XLT Sport from the dealership I work at, I needed to get back into something 4WD before I lost it. So far I have been pretty impressed my my truck. It's black (I've always wanted a black truck) with 87k miles.

A little about me, as I mentioned I work at a Ford dealership as a sales consultant. I enjoy off-roading when ever I get the chance, which unfortuneatly isnt very often. Three years ago, I was the Michigan Chapter President of TTORA, but stepped down and walked away from that venture due to at that time, there was little to no interest in the Michigan Chapter. Currently I am an administrator and team leader of the Section 8 Renegades Scenario Paintball Team, and I am a very avid player. If your curious, our website is www.section8paintball.net.

I am 23, live in Corunna MI, have a daughter and girlfriend of a year and a half (not related unfortunatly).

I am planning to get some different wheels for my explorer for my first mod, I was thinking some black rims, but have not yet found any to fit at this time.

Hey all. Jim here. I signed up some time back., but never posted. I habe a 92 basket case that I will eventuall stuff a 5.0 into. My daughter also just got a 98 XLT explo with the 5.0 and AWD. It just lost the 2-3 shift and further. If you put it in @nd it starys there fine and runs like a top. In drive the 1-2 shift is OK, but when it gets to the poing of 2-3, the engine revs. I have dropped the pan and pulled the filter. There is nothing in it except the black powder like stuff that is in them all. It diesn't smell burned at all. 110k mi on it. When I dropped the pan, the dipstick plug was still in it. I need some expert advice here. B4 it went completely TU. sometimes the TC would not lock up. Since that solenoid and also the 2-3 solenoid both are wired through the plastic wiring, is there a posslbility of that being bad, or am I looking at a rebuild. I've only done about 4 auto trans' My first was a 4EAT, and I've done 2 or 3 A4LD's. How does mo 70W compare as far as ease of teardown/rebuild. As you can tell, I have a ton of questions. Thanks for any and all help.

I got a good Deal on it for 1,400 I do how ever have some Issues with it like a vacume leak causing the check engine light to be on. It has no cruise control Which I hope to add via a factory set up am looking for info on the possibility of just adding it on??? I also own a 92 Mazda Navajo with a 4.0 also. it however is a 4x4 the sport is 2x4 but a clean looking ride I refer to it as my Limo since it is black and has tinted windows . Both are 2 door models which I might add are hard to find parts for in the junk yard here in Vegas. if any one knows if the sport can have factory cruise control added I would appreciate the help I am hoping that the wiring harness already has the plugs in it but haven't checked it out as of yet. I do hope it does so all I have to do is get the parts and plug them in if not I hope to strip the needed connections out of an existing harness and add them to mine I believe factory is much better than aftermarket.
