I am interested in making my explorer's engine sound a little louder and better so I am interested in buying an aftermarket air intake. Does anyone know what company's if any, make a good explorer intake?

Will, most people you talk to on this site will recommend a KKM http://www.kustomz.com true-rev kit, or a K&N http://www.knfilters.com FIPK, or drop-in filter. If you use the drop-in filter, you can also consider drilling some holes in your airbox. Do a search on this site for airboxes, you may also get some ideas for a custom cold air box.

Both of you two are in the same boat I'm in. It's one of two things. If you want the "cone" type filter you must go with KKM. Nobody else makes them for the old explorers. For a drop in filter you could go with K@N. I myself am debating about upgrading to the cone type filter.

BTW....JGSTEWART8 if I do go with these systems I'll give you a yell. Right now my airbox is wrapped with header wrap to keep it cool with a K@N drop in. Both can be reused. I'll let you know.

Both have they're ups and downs. The KKN one doesn't like the water too much from what I've heard. While the drop in gives you a bit less power. No matter which way you go I'd stay away from drilling the air box. But that's just what I think.

I had to upgrade to a new filter not long ago. I left a wrench on my air box and when i closed my hood it punched a hole in the air box. After a month with a duct taped air box i replaced it and went with the KKM and have been pleased with it.

Go with the KKM, it is the best intake mod for the $. If used correctly, you won't have any problems with water.
