View Full Version : Feels like i'm driving knobby tires

First I would like to say that this site is an awesome find.

I have a 4x4 sportrac that feels rough when starting off, kinda like I have aggresive tires. When my speed increases it goes away.

There is no "ratcheting" like a CV would make.

Any ideas or experiences.

Richard

what tires are on there? Are they worn irregularly in spots like high and low spots? Sometimes if you dont rotate for a long time the tires may develop "cupping" Sometimes you can feel it by running your hands around the tread. Or you can often drive a few feet onto a smooth concrete surface like a garage floor and then look at the tread and see if only parts of the tread seem to look dusty or chaucky.

Welcome to this forum! Rotate the tires, and see if there is still a problem.

My first thought also was the tires. I had the problem before my tires were replaced. My new tires, all four, still feel the same. The wear on the old tires were even. I drove them without rotating.

I was told that my CV joints may be dry. I peeled back the boots to inspect but the grease was still intact. Besides the "ratchet" sound is not present. I was also told that the tell tale sound may not always be present.

Has anyone heard of CV joints failing when the boots and grease are in good condition. The knobby feeling when I start to roll forward might just be the bearings starting to fail, it is more pronounced when the wheel it slightly turned.

Opinions?
