View Full Version : HVAC part ID needed please
Stic-o 11-07-2008, 12:50 AM Ok, so it started getting a bit cool in the house, so I desided to fire up the Heater...or if it even worked:confused: Good news it does...only my wife walked into the house coing home from work and said the whole house smelled like gas:thumbdwn: So I explained to her over the phone how to shut the gas off. I figured it was a leak somewhere...and I was right.:( I need a new box pictured below. Mine has a crack where the intake is at the thread, and is leakying. Now I need to know what this thing is called? Anyone?

Thermocouple Pilot Gas Valve thats what i found from google. Its pretty much the gas control valve, the thermocouple should run down to the main burner.

Its a Gas Valve.
Stic-o 11-07-2008, 01:07 AM Ok yeah I found it... It the gas valve.
Lennox G12Q3-82 is the model... Looks like there is a upgraded new one for about $250 bucks:eek:
I think I'll be calling the home waranty company and spend just $55 :D
Ouch! Ya good call on that one. I know some places won't even mess with heaters if there a certain age.
Last year my grandma called me over to look at her heater. The valve screwed up and was giving the heater to much gas. The entire front of the furnace was charcoal from the 2 foot flames. She was very lucky to say the least. Ended up having to replace it because it was to old.
Stic-o 11-07-2008, 01:18 AM No no... My warenty says they will fix or replace...no mater what the cost. That was the first question I asked, when I bought my place;) If the A/C system goes, they pay for it, all the ducting, everything;)
Cost $55 a visit:D
dogfriend 11-07-2008, 03:01 AM Its pretty much the gas control valve,
I was going to say that. ;)

Wait, did you get an inspection on this before you bought?
Did they check for CO? If not, ask for the furnace to be replaced, you have no idea if there is a crack in heat exchanger then..
If they won't do it, ask for a CO (carbon monoxide) test after they fix it.
Stic-o 11-07-2008, 12:16 PM yeah the inspection guy just said that the furnace didn't work:rolleyes: However the gas was off at the time:rolleyes:
I can actually take my finger and feel and hear the gas leaking out of the crack:(
you can sort of see the crack in the pic above, just over the threads in about 11 o'clock.
Gatorblazer 11-07-2008, 12:21 PM Have the warranty company check the chambers in the unit while they are there. They didnt check mine whent they replaced my valve, and then my CO detector went nuts when the unit started working. I had a cracked chamber pumping CO in the house. They are replacing the whole thing Monday.
Dont tell them that your inspector said it didnt work, they will deny your claim. It was running a few weeks ago and then just quit...
Stic-o 11-07-2008, 12:27 PM The inspector was just lazy:rolleyes: I just figured they (old owners) turned the gas off during the summer. That's what I always did:rolleyes: No reason to have a pilot lit for nothing.
When I had them come look at the A/C orginally they would not touch the furnace part because it did not have a flex gas line on it. (earthquake thing) We had to put one on our selfs, and the A/C guys said there was no way it should have passed inspection with out the flex line. So I call it lazy:rolleyes:
Just got off the phone, they are coming out tommorow to fix.
Stic-o 11-09-2008, 12:15 AM So they came and looked at it. Waiting to here what the warranty company will say, they are recomending the whole unit be replaced:D
It's the orginal from 1973 http://www.thebreakfast.info/forum/images/smilies/23z.gif
BrooklynBay 11-09-2008, 12:19 AM Check a plumbing supply. I've replaced many of these units for under $100. Keep in mind that they have different BTU ratings. How many BTUs is your boiler? The part you need is made to use a standing pilot. The intermittent pilot uses a spark module instead of a thermocouple. The end which acts like a spark plug sends a signal back to the spark module when it detects a flame. The thermocouple sends a very small voltage back to hold open the gas valve just enough to keep a pilot light on. It shuts the gas down if there is no flame.
Stic-o 11-13-2008, 03:33 PM Update:
Good news and Bad....
Good news is they are going to replace the Furnace
Bad news is, it's going to cost me ...gulp $970 bucks:eek: This is mostly because my unit is 25 years old...and well the units these days are a little smaller  some modifications are needed.
it could be worse though...with out the waranty, it would have cost me a lot more!:(
Ya thats still fairly cheap. My Dad is replacing his right now and the furnace itself was $1300.
Stic-o 11-24-2008, 01:46 PM So we're coming up on 3 weeks here and I still have no heater. I'm told it's "in transit". For some reason they orded another Lennox, which is not very common on the left coast, so it's taking awhile:rolleyes: Should here a status today. Mean while they have given me a $50 credit to buy a space heater.
So where can I get a Heater for a 1200+ SqFt home for $50 bucks?
Now, If a buy a space heater...and Put in front of the intake for the HVAC, and turn the HVAC fan on....Will it heat the house? Getto? Yes...:( Or do I just put it in one room:rolleyes:
Stic-o 11-28-2008, 07:48 PM New heater is in...and the house is warm again:bounce:
Ended up only cosing me about $800 bucks
Now I'm taking back that space heater and buying some tools:p:
Stic-o 06-19-2009, 07:58 PM well thought I'd revive this thread, because it's time for part 2: The A/C Condinser died:(
It' s starting to tink about warming up here in So Cal, so I thought I should get to it before it's 110* outside:rolleyes: and my home warrenty exspires in 45 days.
So the came and looked at it, and a new one is on the way;) It's goona cost me $500 bucks for the install, but that's it:thumbsup:
