View Full Version : Insulating fire place

Well not exactly insulating. I have a vented gas fireplace. The top metal piece vibrates like the dickens. It can't be completely insulated as there is a blower that moves air around the fireplace. I believe most of the heat comes out of that top panel. My idea is to space little squares of something around it to weigh it down. I just don't know what can take the heat. I need something like dynamat but heat resistant.

Ideas?

Could you put screws through the panel? What is under this metal panel?

...Without pics we would just be guessing what you need...As for insulation you need a minimum of 1" clearance to a combustible material...Your Manufacturer specs might call for even more as they set the minimum standards first...;)

...For little squares you may be able to use what they call "Adobe's"...2"x2" cinder block material which you should be able to get at Home Depot, a block yard, or try contacting a concrete company to find...:dunno:

A custom granite slab with cut outs for heat might work but will cost a lot. You could price something like this in a kitchen cabinet retail store or tile store.

The panel you can see my fingerprints in the dust is the one I'm talking about. There's really nothing to screw it into.

...That looks like a Heatilater brand unit but may be another brand...This is from their website...
"Should I have any type of inspection done to my fireplace, stove or insert?
Yes. We recommend annual service of your fireplace by a qualified serviceperson. This will ensure that your appliance is functioning properly."

...On a more important note, I see you have the glass glow rocks that are sold under various names......Most manufacturer's void warranty with use of those...I have actually seen a peninsula fireplace shatter granite on the surround wall to the ceiling after those rocks were put in..:dunno"

...A couple links to add...For the glass rocks...

I don't think those are glass rocks. Its been that way since the house was built in 98 I think. I got it in 02. Haven't touched the fireplace.

Its not an issue with the fireplace itself. When I'm watching movies a certain frequency makes that top piece sound like the trunk of a ghettosled.

...Sorry, I surely thought that was rock glass on the floor of that fireplace....I think you might have a cracked weld or pinch that is loose on the top...:dunno:

...Thats the best I can do..

I don't *think* there is anything physically wrong with the fireplace.

The problem originates here:

The picture was level before watching the dark knight:

The people living next to you probably have the same problem with things moving on their own.:bounce:
