ok i got a 4 foot firestick and a hd firestick spring and 18 ft of firestick cable. i am set i also went to the shack and got a cool luggage rack clamp. i wont have to drill any holes in anything!!!:>)
James,
Unless you got a no-ground antenna, you will need to ground the antenna to something. Usually, an antenna mount is on metal, so it grounds itself. But if you're mount is on the plastic roof rack, you need to run a wire from the metal mount to something else metal on the truck.

Are these 'no-ground' antennaes any good? Is a grounded antenna better than a no-ground? I need to learn a little bit before I go buy a CB and antenna and try to install them.
I think all antennas are grounded antennas unless they specifically say "no ground plane." If you have a question, call Firestik and ask. If you're still mounting it on the roof rack, you could do a few things to ground it. Basically, you need to run a wire to something metal and screw it into that metal. What I would do is get a wire of appropriate length, probably 14 or 16 ga. Put a loop connector on each end, and put one end on a mounting screw of the antenna mount. Then you have to run the other somewhere. My suggestion is to take out one of the screws holding in the roof rail. Then rescrew it in with the wire attached. Put a light coat of silicone on the threads before you put the screw back in, and a little over the screw when you're done. Be careful, it's really easy to strip the heads of those screws. This will also limit the sliding of the roof rack parts.
If you don't want to do that, run the grounding wire into the truck with the coax, and ground to the closest metal body panel. I'm sure you can figure it out!
for a great magmount base, MFJ makes a Tri-Magnet base that with 5" magnets will hold a Firestick with NO PROBLEM. See the link below.
