A friend of mine had his f-150 that was his work truck stolen and was wrecked. He said I could get whatever I wanted out of it for practically nothing. I could get the 5.0, manual transmission, transfer case, for practically nothing. All of it is in good shape except for the truck. How much would it cost to put a V8 in place of my 4.0 with no to pay for except some adapters?! Also would the manual tranny from a '94 F-150 work in my '93 auto? My V6 is coming to its death soon.
Your post is unclear as to adapters, you probably have to get an adapter set for about $800. You can probably take the computer out of the F150, but it will need to be reprogrammed. That should be easy with a Hypertech plug in programmer. If you're swapping in the computer from the F150, they tranny would work, mechanics wise. You have to get it to fit, I don't know which tranny it is. You would probably need to get a new driveshaft, or two, to work with the new stuff. Also, what would you do with the auto shift lever? You'd have to cut into your floor to get the manual shifter through.
It's an involved project, but you're many steps ahead since you have the parts. It wont be cheap, but will again, be a lot cheaper than getting all the parts.
Good luck! Go for it!

If you can get all of the running gear- engine, trans, transfer case- you wont need any adapters. Rip out the existing engine trans TC, and the computer, edis etc and just put the 150 guts back in, along with the electronics from the donor. With the V-8 I would think that you would want to get a new trans and TC anyway. If thats the case you would only need the motor mounts, a new trans crossmember, and drive shafts front and rear. Radiator for the V-8. The clutch pedal assembly from an Explorer. All of the electronic engine controls from the 150 stay with the same drivetrain so you wouldnt have to tie them in to the Explorer- saving tons of headaches and work. The only real fabbing would be the trans crossmember, and the clutch connections and they wouldnt be too bad.
Just my thoughts but Im not sure I would mess with adapters. Sounds like its more complicated but I dont think it will be. I think it would be just as easy to use all of the F150 parts, and probably a little cheaper-not a lot, but some. Adapters are expensive and if you dont need them then...

Does that F-150 have the 5.0 or the 5.8Liter? The 5.0 Liter should be the 302 and should fit with new mounts and all, but if its the 5.8 it may be too big. Of course with $$$ anything's possible, and a 5.8Liter V-8 Explorer would kick @$$! Especially if you have to have a hump in the hood to fit it. Imagine how that would sound with a nice Flowmaster on it!

Well i could strip the whole drive train out, and may put that 9" rear in the explorer. It is the 302. My problem is how long this would take me since the Explorer is my only vehicle. It will cost money, but better than a new engine, and i will need a rebuilt tranny, plus i want the manual transfer case. I can't remember if it is a manual case though?

you should go for it, i've heard so many better things about the v-8's power, and its gas milage. Which is 14-19 mph. only 1 mpg worse than the v-6 4.0 liter. Go for it man. tell me how it works
