What are all you Ranger guys getting in MPG? Hopefully better than those Explorers.

I also (see sig)have a 1994 Supercab STX 4X4 with manual transmission and BFG all terrain 31s. It gets far worse gas mileage than my Explorer and I haven't figured out why. Around town it gets 13-16 and on the freeway I may seen 18-19. That's with no cat. My Explorer has gotten up to 24 mpg on the freeway if I don't exceed 65 mph. I usually get 21 to 22. With the yakima rack and going 75 it sits at about 19. Around town I get 17 to 18. The Explorer is blessed with Borla exhaust, Custom air intake and a newer much torquier engine. I know the Explorer has a 3.55 rear end and the ranger probably has the same and is turning bigger tires. So far I have been dissappointed in the ranger. The clutch is very stiff and engages at a good pedal height but has poor clamping pressure until just before if fully engages resulting a jerking sensation unless heavily feather at the end of the engaging. Kind a wierd. I did the clutch on me explorer and things got a whole lot better. Maybe it is time for the ranger to get one too.

My Ranger w/33" BFG A/T's and 3.73's gets 12-15 in town
and 16 or so on the HWY. Not great, but a compromise w/
the 33's and 6" of combined lifts I'm now running...

I have a 95 Ranger, 2.3L 4cyl dual-plug, auto (4R44E) 2wd, w/3.75 rear. It is bone stock, save the K&N with cut-out air box, and after a full tune up w/ new Bosch Plats, new wires, syn oil, syn tranny fluid I get 18.5 - 19 mpg around town. My Explorer (73K), see below (w/ 3.27 rear), will get 25.5 mpg hi-way and 20.5 around town. Both stock tire sizes. I am not real happy about the Ranger (68K) mpg especially since I just changed out one of the 2 O2 sensors. It runs fine, just still throwing a CEL (check engine lite) at me all the time, probably the EGR valve or the 'other' O2 sensor. I just expected MUCH better from a 4cyl dual plug !!!

one thing I forgot, did you account for the different tire size versus the speedo error. There is some kind of calulation out the on the forum, do a search. Until you change out your speedo gear, if you not considering the error factor (i.e. w/ 33s versus stock,12% error, I think)
you are getting mych better mpg than u think.

I think my speedo is correct because the stock tire size on the STX supercab is 265/70R15 which is almost the same diameter as the 31s but just a little bit narrower. Great idea though. I ought to get on the freeway with someone and compare.
