View Full Version : Tomken TC0100 (YJ) Tire Carrier

Thunderhorse and I installed the Tomken "The System"
Tire Carrier on the rear of my Ranger, and it really looks
and performs nicely. The install took a little over 2 hrs, and this was due to Jerry needing to cut away at the
plastic trim along the top of the bumper in order to have
room for the mounts which also needed to be drilled in place. The carrier is totally rattle-free, it holds the spare up and away from the bumper, and really compliments my truck. The cost was only $199, and w/tax and shipping (TriCountyGear and I split the cost) the total came to $216. Thunderhorse (Jerry) of course took pictures and is contemplating installing one for his Explorer.
If you're interested in buying one, its the Tomken tire
carrier for the Jeep YJ. This must be due to the wheel bolt
pattern being identical to that of our beloved 15" Ford
rims.

Ken, we need pics! Did you lose the use of your tailgate, or does the carrier fold down somehow? Or do I not understand what you're describing?

The tire carrier bolts to the center to right side of the rear bumper. It swings out [right] and stops the tire just
shy of hitting your passenger brake light. Jerry took pictures w/his killer 35mm SLR camera. I'll try and do the
same soon. Because the carrier was mounted so far to the right of the bumper, the integrity of the bumper is being
compromised. I'll keep an eye on it, but so far, so good. I still have full function of the tailgate, but now, I have
my spare mounted up behind the truck, and soon, my CB antenna, Hilift and 5gal Blitz can will be back there as
well. The rear bumper is kinda flimsy, but if it doesn't hold up to the rigors of Baja, I'll just get something made
for the Ranger, and show it off to you folks at the next rendezvous! Oh, the 2" body lift didn't hurt much...

One more thing, if you need a way to hold your 33" spare, this is the way to go if you're not up for an in-bed
carrier, and also want that HARDCORE look and utility. The cost was a mere $216 w/tax and you'll be the envy of all of
those "other" SUV's and Pickups. Didn't the guy on the new Nissan commercial say, "This isn't a good time to be another
truck?" I think not. I'd like to see this Tomken carrier to the back of a plastic Nissan bumper! Now, that wouldn't
be a good time to be a Nissan on the trail!

Ken, I think the best part is the improvement of the front/rear weight ratio, especially when you put on the HiLift and gas can. Our truck are SO unbalanced!

That's why I made sure we'd mount the carrier to the right
side of the bumper to counteract the left-side lean that
we all experience with our Rangers. No more lean, but now the truck really rides nose up. I'm not some "show truck"
wannabe, so I'm not really concerned about this. I do know the braking action is going to be more stable, though. WE
should get out and do a mild run next weekend. I've been wanting to get out, and I couldn't make it to Truckhaven
last weekend. Suzanne is doing more wedding shopping with her cousin, so I'll be sitting around *ALL DAY* w/nothing
going on.

Email me privately, and I'll send you as many photos you'll want of this setup. It looks like I'm all about 'wheeling, and it made it all over Baja, California - when some $200,000.00 trophy trucks couldn't make it all over Baja, so you know the thing is beefy. Anyway, just email me, and I'll do the rest!
