I found this forum because i am searching for a solution for my 1996 ford ranger xlt. The front wheels are making a clicking sound, much to fast to be a u-joint, doesn't change pitch like a bearing, and everything i can find looks normal. I took the guts of the hub out, to see if it was parially engaged and drove it around, same old noise, like a playing card in the spokes of your old bicycle. any hints or clues would be great if you got them!!

...Welcome here..:D

...Have you thoroughly investigated your bearings/brakes, and is this coming from both sides or only one side???

wow, that was fast. I have been looking at all of these things, and it is coming from both sides. could it be the abs sensors? this problem didn't sneak up on me, just one morning it got really loud as i drove to work.

...First, you haven't mentioned an abs light.....Do the abs sensors look clean or are they covered with stuff, or are they showing any signs of damage??

..I would think that you would be see visible wear marks on a few items if it is a problem other than the hubs or bearings...

...When was the last time you pulled and packed/replaced your bearings and or brakes???

i had not even thought about the abs. I did some brake work quite a while back. I am going to check the abs and look carefully for any kind of wear. If I don't find that I will repack the bearings. Thanks for your help!

...Personally, I still think it's your hubs...:dunno:

...You have manual hubs but they may be packed with grease...Be sure they are clean and then soak them in atf overnight, dump it out, and thats all you need...

...But let us know what you find...;)
