View Full Version : Farewell to both explorers maybe
BrianDye 09-11-2009, 01:11 AM So you all know....or should know I have my 92, and my 95, Ive been working on the 95 for 4 months now, still not even plated yet to drive, but its just been more of a laziness type of thing, I just need to put the interior back together lol, but ive really had my eye on LS'es lately, and decided why the hell not, so I posted an ad on craigslist, JUST TO SEE what kind of offers I would get, mainly wanting to trade both the explorers for an LS.
So I was browsing around (12-1 am, so I knew I wasnt getting any replies to my ad tonight for sure) and I saw one ad for a 2001 LS, 170k miles, runs great, perfect interior, a deep blue color, with tan and grey interior i think, he says he wants to trade it for something with big rims, or bagged, so I figure why not email him.
So i basically said I have a 92 eddie bauer, and a 95 XLT explorer, blah blah, email back if you'd be interested and ill give you more info, so he emailed back right away, asking for a few pics, saying he was real interested in trading, so I just about shit my pants (im almost 18, part time job, and LS'es have been my dream car for like 4 years now haha, my dad had bought one in '00 when they came out, and i fell in love with them, then my uncle bought one last year, an 06? i think) so hes coming out to look at them sunday, and im gonna be checkin the LS out.
Im so happy, yet so sad....its like trading family members, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my explorer(s) and I hate to get rid of them, but the 92 isnt getting any better, one of the pulleys was loose a couple days ago, it was making a horrid rattling noise, very embarrasing I might ad haha.
I was watching some vid's on youtube, and seen a comment or two about the 01's having tranny prob's.....anyone know about that? Ill honest to god probably tell the dude no, if its the original tranny, thats like waiting to go if it is the original.
Any other things I should check for?
And BTW for all the elite's....I still fully plan on becoming elite, even though I wont have an explorer, this site has helped me so much, and has been so much fun to post on, and help people out, so the least I can do is spare 20 bucks, im just waitin to get a few more hours at work, then ill be able to.
Heres the pic he had on the post, well there were a few of the interior but I didnt save them

Not the BIGGEST fan of the color, but in the future, id be getting it painted black lol. From the pics, it looks like hes taken care of the paint very very good too; it looks like theres a scrape on the mirror, but its just a reflection he said.
BrianDye 09-11-2009, 01:18 AM And another thing I love about them, is that the batteries in the trunk, so I can buy 0 gauge wire, at the rip off price of like 4$ a foot, and only spend like 16$ haha.
(I think all years it was in the trunk, i dont remember my dads much, but my uncles 06 is in there.)
Sams01XplrSprt 09-11-2009, 03:27 AM so r u buying that ls brian and is it a v8 or v6
BrianDye 09-11-2009, 05:28 AM he was real interested in trading,
Its a v6 though :/
lol
BrianDye 09-11-2009, 09:00 AM I never liked the Taurus lol but I have to agree with alot of what you said I know I should keep the 95 but I've wanted an ls since 00' when they came out, and ID hate to pass this up and I can assure you I would probably have it until I'm at least 20 then ID probably have enough to buy an 06+ lol
the 95 IS road worthy and done, I just have to put the panels and whatnot back on so I'm gonna spend today after school todo that and I should have it just about done.
I do thank you though for your honesty though and straightforward opinions about it.
But trust me I'm gonna drive it for a good 30 minutes at least plus I'm bringing my buddies dad to check it out with me he's a mechanic so he'll be a lot of help.
b00xtreme 09-11-2009, 04:56 PM its your money, but i'd say don't do it. you are trading 2 explorers for 1 v6 lincoln ls with 170k miles.....seems like you are getting the shaft. it has that many miles and only has a v6...hardly seems worth it
blueka 09-11-2009, 05:09 PM and that lincoln is ugly and looks like an old mitsubishi...
Si
BrianDye 09-12-2009, 11:37 PM I shit my pants yesterday...he told me its the original trans, I made my mind up right there that im not giving up 2 explorers, even though the 92 is far from good condition, I told him id do the 95 explorer, and my ps3 and games. (read down further, I forgot to ad this so the quote is where i originally started)

That lincoln has half of my 92's mileage, and almost the same as my 95's...
The only thing wrong with it, is it has a small crack in the windshield, and it needs a new motor for the window in the drivers door. Paint looks amazing, interior is spectacular, and it runs like new, I went and looked at it today, didnt have time to test drive it.
Im got so happy, because he said he'd take my 95 explorer, and my ps3 and games and whatnot, so I was like sweet shit, ill drive the ls then put my 92 up for sale, and I can use the money from my 92, to put into the car, and then save the rest, (id get the 06 style chrome grill, 03+ style taillights) (that are only red on the bottom, clear on top, and then id pay myself back from the window motor, and windshield)
I also said id throw in a big dual 12" ported sub box, which I have no use for, and he was gonna trade me for all that.
He emails me today before I go into work, and told me he'd rather trade for both explorers, and I emailed him back just a litle bit ago and said the only way id do that is if you put a new trans in there, otherwise im gonna have to say no thanks....(no email back yet, it was about an hour ago)
Then I got an email from this guy who has a '79 Mustang (or as he called it "Notch" maybe thats actually what it is, excuse my stupidity) 5.0, 25,xxx...let me repeat that TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND original miles, not a spot of rust on the body or anywhere else, mint condition, but its an automatic....he wants to straight up trade both my explorers for it.
Id love todo that, but call me stupid again, I HATE HATE HATE the interior on that car, plus I would feel horrible taking it from him, I cant garage it in the winter or when it rains like he has.

and ew!!

Thats one thing if you dont know about me, I HATE red interiors, let alone horrible looking fake wood, at least on the LS its got some shine haha
and that lincoln is ugly and looks like an old mitsubishi...

I literally asked nothing about what you thought it looked like.
I disagree with both things you said, and that was a pointless post.
Just thought id throw that out there.
vroomzoomboom 09-13-2009, 12:13 AM DAM! I'd kill for that 79! i also know if SVO saw this, he would probably say the same thing!
BrianDye 09-13-2009, 12:52 AM I cant say id kill, but honestly, if you put a brand new (whatever year is the latest LS...07 I think?) 07 LS, and that 79' side by side and made me choose, I cant say which one id pick.
I could easily tell that guy with the LS to ##### off, and take the notch, but then again, whats better for a 17 year old LOL
blueka 09-13-2009, 02:40 PM I know you didn't ask my opinion... you don't know me...
and as for a pointless post????

BrianDye 09-13-2009, 09:30 PM I was just reading his 2nd to last email, when he said trade for the explorer and ps3, he said ill take the explorer with speakers, and the ps3, I assumed the 95 for some reason, not realizing I put that the 92 has tweeters and sony 3 ways all around, and the monitor and whatnot, in the ad I put the 95 has the stock JBL system so I assumed he meant that, so that would be kickass to have the LS and my 95 still, I could continue to work on it :D haha
Joe Dirt 09-15-2009, 10:55 PM I'm still waiting for the BIG news!!!
;)
BrianDye 09-15-2009, 10:56 PM JD, Did you ever get my PM about the center caps?
I had read in a post you have quite a few extras, and I had asked if you wanted to sell me for of them for the 95 lol
Jd0gg919 09-15-2009, 10:59 PM Keep the explorers man. If you finish up everything that you've mentioned wanting to do, you will have a nice vehicle. You'll also have a sense of pride in it that you wouldn't otherwise have. I think about trading my truck every once in a while but I can't bring myself to part with it because of all the hard work I've put into it. I'll drive it til it explodes.

I have a ton of that pride from what ive already done lol, but just in the long run, an LS is everything I want, the only things id do is get the chrome style grill, newer style tails, and maybe a nice set of 18" 5 spoke rims, where as my explorer, I want one thing after another for it, plus I miss handling the road the way a car can. Im keeping the 92 though for sure, so ill still have my baby :D haha.
Idk, im just taking a shot at my dream....like I said before, Ive wanted an LS since the day in 2000 when my dad bought one as soon as they came out. Ive always liked explorers dont get me wrong, but ive liked LS'es so much more, and I realize I am EXTREMELY stupid for getting the 95, but then again, it was worth it getting rid of that problem child taurus. So no matter what, im not gonna be disapointed about that, and I fully plan on driving the LS for a good half hour, highway, roads, bad roads, and im gonna have my buddies dad with me to check it out even more than I can. Im not afraid to tell him if I dont want it, or if I think theres somethin fishy goin on; when I got the 95 explorer, I was really iffy about it, because the interior was pretty thrashed from smokers, but I loved the way it drove, and I had full intentions on redoing it all, which ive managed to almost finish; so I went ahead and traded, I even asked the dude right there if it was stolen, he just acted weird, plus the "real" owner wasnt there at the time, it was his brother, and I later found out that they buy cars and then sell them, so it made a little more sense.
(I traded him the taurus, and seen it on craigslist that night LOL)
BrianDye 09-15-2009, 11:47 PM its your money, but i'd say don't do it. you are trading 2 explorers for 1 v6 lincoln ls
V6 luxury car, vs V6 brick wall....lol.
Plus its got the semi-auto shifter, so I can go from D5, or D4, or I can shift electronically like a stick which is pretty badass, when I drive my uncles I always do that
Joe Dirt 09-16-2009, 08:32 AM All of my caps were history in 4 PM's, and I had about 20 PM's on them...
Been there done that on the "dream car" thing. Problem is, you're settling for this LS, and saying that it's your dream car when it isn't. A Black on chrome V8 might be, but a blue V6 isn't. You'll never be totally happy with it, because it's not what you want. It isn't a V8, and you'll get rid of this one to get a V8 when you find one, and end up spending more money than you needed to in the process. Been there, done that.
You'll also love it at first, then eh- it's ok, then God this thing is slow- HP is virtually the same as a SOHC Explorer! Plus- you'll grow indifferent to it after a few months of daily driving. It's your money and equity, but if it were me, I'd buy a 2003+ V8 before I'd settle on an unflattering blue V6.
What's worse? When you race a SOHC Explorer that runs 0-60 in 8.5 sec, in a LS V6 that runs 0-60 in 8.5 sec... And the Explorer gets a jump... Ouch- at least you'll be in a luxury car. ;)
What happened to the 4x4 Mustang?
