Here's a little poll to let us know how you got here. With the site growing as rapidly as it is, its always interesting to see how you found explorerforum.com and explorer4x4.com.

Thanks and welcome!:)

I was on the net at work and typed in "Ford Explorer" on Yahoo and up came this site. Until I actually spent some time going through the site I was not going to do any modifications to my Explorer, but know I am saving my pennies (actually hiding money from my wife) so I can do as much as possible. My wife just rolls her eyes and says it's a waste of money (typical I imagine). About a week ago I put the Warrior shackles on , my first mod, and I swear my Explorer is running better!!

i found this site from a little notice in an issue of 4 wheeler a couple years back. not the one about truckhaven but another little section a ways back. that was still when the site was at the other location.

I have tried numerous time to convince my wife to go , but she says she is scared of rolling over. She even gets nervous when I drive into the yard to unload something. However my 3 year old son loves getting crazy, he and I did a little drift busting and some donuts this winter and he was yelling more daddy more. The only problem was he told mommy when we got home, and bet you can guess what happened next.

My ex-girlfriend said that too. I found this on the internet and that's when I started to spend a LOT of money on my truck instead of my ex, but that was not the reason why we broke up. hehe.

I was just surfing the net when I came across this Explorer Oasis. I'm in the market for a new car, and I really like the Explorer Sport. So I've been surfing the net for stuff on the Explorer. I must say that this is the best web site I've been to, that's why I refer it to as an oasis. I can read about anything I need to know about. This is the website I keep going back to. Thanks!

Hmm...Well, I think it was from the rec.autos.makers.ford.explorer newsgroup. I was messing around on Netscape Collabra one day (I normally use Microsoft stuff--I HATE Netscape--but the University installed it, so I was seeing what all it did...but I digress) came across that newsgroup and found a message regarding this site. Lucky me. :D

Well I was out playing in the mud in my X and I kept getting stuck. Everytime I got stuck I noticed one of my dummy lights kept going off. But only for a split second, not giving me enough time to read it. Well, I finally got so stuck I needed a tank to get me out and that dummy light finally STAYED on! I read it and didn't quite understand it at first. It said "YOU NEED TO VISIT ULTIMATE EXPLORATIONS ASAP!!!"
After I tipped the tank commander $50 I went home and logged on to Ultimate Explorations. Then and only then did I understand what my truck was trying to say. It seems there are all sorts of modifications that can be done to me beloved X!
The rest is history!

Or maybe I just happened to find it when I did a search on Yahoo for Explorers. You decide.

Gee, let me see.

It started when I was 13 years old. I met this strange young 15 year old boy. Well, we dated (so to speak) for about 3 years. Then he went his way and I went mine. My brothers would bump into this long afro haired boy at some silly race track. Finally, at 18 we talked to each other again. At 25 I moved to AZ and moved in with him. Well, thank goodness the long hair was gone. He didn't SEEM like a bad guy. Next thing I know I'm in this Ford Explorer and climbing over things bigger than me.

The worst part of it all is I married him!

Oh yeah, this was supposed to be about how I found this site. Darn, I can't remember! Anybody have any ideas? :D

member 95XLT who lives near me got me interested in a explorer over an f-150, and ever since then it just continued and i love explorers now. Before i owned them i used to have them and their drivers, but now i have realized what a great vechicle they are and what a great deal you get for your money. you get a lot of cool stuff included in the newer X's. and they last a long time, they are quite durable!

Thanks! I was surfing ebay and found that one of the sellers had it on a website of ford related products. I right clicked on it and chose to "add to favorites...". I named it animated ford logo.

Now all I have to do is open up "my favorites" and click on animated ford logo and it pops up. I right click on it and choose properties. Then copy the address and post it like we do all our other pics. (using the "IMG") and there you have it.

You can right click on the one that is in my post and do the same.

This sight is the coolest! I did a search on metacrawler and found this site. Since I have been reading this info provided in here , all of my questions have been by far answered. I am new in the explorer stuff since I just purchased mine about four months ago, my wife is totally digging the 4x4 stuff and is active in finding me new toys and info for my truck. Thanks again for having such a kick ass website.

LOL... Me Too.. After every mod "I swear Suzie, that's as high (loud/fast/whatever) as it will get" ;) Needless to say she hasn't seen the X with the new 2" P.A. lift and TSL's... hahaha.

When I first bougt the X about 5 months ago, she thought is was the sweetest ride, it was smooth a loud system and just fun to be in (HER idea of fun). Now I have it about 4" highter and you can here the mudders and flowmaster coming before the system!! As you can see, I've done a ton in 5 months, so you can only imagine her suprise. hehe :)

hmm... I only imagine.... what would happen if I would have put all the $$ I spent on the X into stocks... ahhhh... who cares. :D

I specifically remember the first time I stumbled on this site. I was in the computer lab at college in some sort of english/writing class and we were supposed to be finding a website to critique, ya know, the layout, design, make sure there are all the good features. At that time I was considering selling my Nissan and buying another SUV, but I didn't know what. Somehow I ended up here and the rest is history!!!

with the direction the stock market has headed for the past year, i think you made the better choice. you would probably have less money if you invested it in some stocks (especially tech stocks).

I actually did a search for Ford Explorer Forum after going to the mustang forum (Stangnet.com). And this was the 1st one that came up. This site and Stangnet.com are the best forums, go to any other forum for any other car and they suck, some you can barely read b/c they use a different layout than our sites.

I happened across this site a few months ago. I became interested in some of the tech articles, but didn't get hooked until I started reading the forums. I wish I had found this a few years ago. When I first bought my truck the only sites I could find were for everything EXCEPT an Explorer. I'm looking forward to getting back to San Diego so I can join in on the fun.

Happy Trails.

Well Hello Lex, and welcome to the site. Glad to see that we made it to New Zealand. :D Do you do any wheeling over there? I would like to see some pictures if you have any. We have lots of very good information here and the guys and girls are top notch here. If they can't find the answer to your questions, then no one can. :)

Lex Ward
02-06-2003, 03:37 AM
$x$ is pretty big in New Zealand, the terrain kind of lends itself to it!!! We use them pretty much for business in farming and getting to where you need to get for both business and pleasure. There are several 4x4 clubs in NZ with some pretty way out machines being made by some pretty clever people. New Zealands are known for their ability to make things that they cant buy, as we are so far away from the rest of the world one needs to be able to be inventive. You should come down under some day and have a look.

Lex,
Visiting your beautiful country is definately on my lifes list of things to do. I got a few more years before the kids leave the nest, then Sandy and I are going to do some traveling. New Zealand and Australia are the first 2 countries on our list. We wouldn't be able to take the Explorer, but I know that there are 4x4 rentals there, so we could check out the countryside.

I was looking for a good used suv that could be adapted to a weekend (offroad) warrior but still be a good daily driver. I figured that the jeep was overrated and many of the aftermarket parts are way overpriced for what they are. The blazer...no freaking way...HATE them (i had an s-10...pretty much the same). And will not buy a "foreign" model. So google thankfully brought me to this site.

My tempo rusted so bad that the support for the gas tank gave way and the gas tank hanger rubbed on the brake line so I needed a car... I saw a nice 94 LTD drove it and loved it so I looked on the internet to see what I could find. Found a site with legal inormation about joining lawsuits about rolling over, tires explodeing, then I found this one! So I bought the truck and I love it, and I love this site! But I keep planning on lifting it, getting 33-35's, 4:10, headers, hahaha, this truck is so great, awesome website!!

Was having problems with my 02 explorer tranny and found this site via Google. I would like to add that all the local dealers in my area swore up and down that there was no way to disable the auto 4x4.................but there is. did the brown wire mod and can't help but wonder why Ford didn't install this themselves. Running in 2 wheel has really helped to eliminate my od from searching for the right ratio all the time tho I still have a problem which i hope a flush and service will fix. This is a great site that I found by Google search.

I purchased a new Explorer XLS in 2000 with the 4.0 EFI motor. I used this vehicle to haul horse and general purpose trailers but it always seemed underpowered. I would like to increase rear wheel horsepower and torque but don't know which mods are the best and in what sequence I should modify. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate a return message.

Hello all. I am a new member and I hope to participate in future discussions.

I recently bought a 1999 EB edition Explorer — and I love it.

However, there are a few problems with it that I was wondering if it has occurred to others: like the CD Changer only reading two CDs, some of the steering wheel controls do not work, where's the best place to get a lens for a cracked fog light... etc.

Hey everyone,

Wanted to post as a newbie. I have a 99 Explorer, 2DR 4X4 and love it. The only think I don't like is the fuel milage. I am irritated that I have a 15 Gallon tank and want to put in a 22 Gallon Tank. I want to ask the moderators and members who work on their trucks and know them inside and out. I asked my cousin, a lincoln dealer in Exeter, Ontario, who told me it was not possible....but I think it is.... I just want confirmation and to ask where I can buy one.

I first found this site while doing research on building a Jeep Cheorkee with a Cummins 4bt engine conversion. While researching I found the jeep drivetrain was weak. dana 35 in back and 30 up front. A common swap is to take an explorer rear end and weld the brackets for the jeep. This brought to the Explorer. dana 35 in front and the robust 8.8 in back, a strong latter frame. and ford qualty and stoutness. This was the perfect platform for my project. However it didn't materialize. I was looking at 3 to 4K just for the drivetrain plus time was short. Lotts of overtime at work(7 days a week)with a one hour commute. I oppted for a Mercedes 300SD(a perfect commuter car). Maybe someone will pick up where I left off. I sure would like to see that Explorer with a 4cyl Cummins.

They have window stickers Cool how do I get 1? My wife and I allways wanted an Explorer. We even test drove the first 1 at the local dealership when they were released.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago. I just bought an 99 Windstar SE for my wife to replace her aging Areostar. We been using it for people mover transport hauler just general work horse. Now I needed to have my SUV to pull the Mini to my events. My bud at work had now mine 91 Explorer Eddie B. A little money changed hands an now, well I'm here. the funny thing is I'm not to keen on air bags and daytime running lights. My 91 was from the US so it dosn't have either.

Now to start upgraiding/ repairing. The 91 came with an 4 lt ,auto JBL system, leather, sunroof ect. I pulled the "factory cassette deak and replaced it with an Pioneer head unit. An push button starter alarm combo was next. I'm looking into an chip upgraid, cold air box and clear front marker lights. Any ideas! Cost is allways an issue. This is my every day driver so street is more than the off road type.

I was looking for an Explorer Club in the Bay Area and I couldn't find one so I searched around for something related to Ford Explorers so I came along to this site.

I found this site from a friend but I love this site a lot I get to chat with fellow explorer owners and ask them questions and they respond back to your questions.

So as soon as I got home I went to google typed in FORD EXPLORER PERFORMANCE, and I clicked on this site. I bought the truck for my wife as I saved money to buy another beloved Jeep. When the FORD DEMON punctured my brain with love for the damn thing. The truck is mine now, she can drive the mustang. Then in attempt to please the DEMON like I did with the mustang. I used the interstellar acquisitioning portal (internet) to locate a power source of pleasure goodies to offer to the demon. I searched long and hard (clicked on google) with despair. Then as I was at wits end, I found a forum where other have been persecuted with the atrocities of the Demon, named Explorer. I have learned the tools and add-ons it takes to pleas the demon. Her cry is for a lift. Then tires.....

Have a 98 Bauer w/tow pkg. Bought it new, have 126k miles. Found this website looking for info about my Exp. Trying to find out what to expect in terms of longevity of equipment. Only very minor repairs so far. Had the tranny flushed at 85k. Regular service at the dealer. I'm thinking of driving it to Az this winter. But nervous about the reliability of the vehicle. Runs great. By the way, the antenna no longer goes down, and the digital display on the radio only works when it's been on for about 6 hours. Anyone know about reasonably priced replacements? It has the Mach(sp) radio. Just found this forum last night.

Red, red, I like red..great vehicle so far, looks brand new. Thought I'd go back and see what the group was all about and so far so good. I found this site Googling for Sport Trac sites. To tell the truth, I have been a GM guy for years, but we now have a grand daughter and it was difficult to get wife, grand daughter, and me in in a regular cab S-10. Extended cabs were really no option. We were looking at Sport Tracs, Avalanches and Nisssan Frontiers. Could not find a V-6 Avalanche, did not really want to buy a Nissan. After test driving several of each, we decided on a 2001 Sport Trac w/57,000 miles. We like it, alot. Just put on the Ford step bars, (wife is 5' 2"). I hated spending that much but could not find the "titanium" color anywhere else. I am waiting for my factory mats to come in and am bidding on a console bag now (seems they are the first thing removed before a trade-in). I am a "big blue oval" guy now! Looking forward to getting some good info from here. Next acquisition will probably be a tonneau cover. Thanks, good to be a part of this.

Got here after a LONG web search for info on 1991 Ranger v6 3.0L EFI "check engine" light, the dreaded trouble code 22 & the "that year does not HAVE a MAP sensor" conundrum. This is the only place found so far where there is a solid hit among all the garbage search results.

Typed something like "explorer automatic transmission fluid disappearing" in the Yahoo search bar, and this forum was like #2 on the list. When I hit the link, the threads author had the identical problem, and there was a step by step fix that I never would have figured out, or known how to fix.
A big thanks to all who take the time to post solutions and how-to's. You've already saved me a big bag of money on repairs.

I am a 30+ year licenced professional collision/quality custom metalwork fabrication and repair technician, that spent many years in the professional racing industry.
We received a 2002 Sport Trac in my insurance "write off" files during building a new collision shop, an expansion of a full service parts and mechanical repair facility already here for years, which I manage part-time.
This SUV/Truck was a relatively light hit with frame damage in the left rear box area a couple of years ago, and the shop owner plans to make a showpiece of it.
It was written off because of the remote Arctic location, Baffin Island we live on, combined with not having a professional collision shop locally at the time.
I found this forum by way of a search on the internet.
Hopefully I can ask worthy questions of those in the know as to how I can swap this 4X4 into a 2wd, and correctly fit a supercharged 5.4 powertrain, along with the front suspension, brakes, and required differential into it.
Thanks for the opportunity to learn from those who have done so.

I'm sorry if I've offended anyone with my first post, but being an American,
it just came out! Anyway, hello, and I hope you all aren't asleep, I probably should be. I was searching the net for a rebuild "kit" for the 5-speed that came in my '94 Explorer Sport XL 4WD, it's currently a 2WD with the 5-speed from a '95 Ranger and a $160 custom rear driveshaft. I was browsing Jeff's Bronco Graveyard for parts for one of my other 4x4s when I came accross a "Master Rebuild Kit" for an M5R2, for a price that seems alot less than the total will be if my local Ford parts man gets me the pieces individually. I was thinking the M5R2 was the tranny I have. I know it's not a Mitsubishi 5-speed like the one in my '87 Bronco II XLT. My problem is, I can't find ANY internal parts for Explorer 5-speeds on the Internet! Body parts and custom junk is EVERYWHERE, but the closest I get to internal tranny parts is the clutch & pressure plate set.
I was hoping someone here can help me, although I see alot being written about automatic transmissions, I didn't see much about manuals. Hopefully someone can help with my explorations into the world of gears and syncro's!
Thanks

I needed, and It helped a great deal when my brother and I put the 98 ranger body lift on my sport. I ordered the summit brand and it worked great for only $121. believe it or not everything went off without a hitch, just had to make my own rear bumper brackets, but I knew that from info. I got on this site. Once I figure out how I'll post up some before and after pics.

HELLO ALL!!!

Moved to Prescott, Az a year ago and have been driving a used 2002 Honda Oddyssey since 2004. I'm a sales rep for a major Distributor of Janitorial Supplies. The Van has filled it's need 140,000 miles but have been a true Ford family man. Always loved the design of the 2001 - 2005 Ford Sport Tac and thought that reading up on the Forum of Ford Sport Trac will give me an owner's view before I make the plunge to the purchase of a used / low mileage / late model.

Howdy, I have a 97 eddie bower that I am slowly upgrading. My daytime running lights would not turn off and during the google search for answers I found this site. By the way my solution was to disconnect the 15 amp fuse in the #8 position under the hood. That also took out my fog lights but plan on replacing them along with the bumpers anyway. I expect it will be much cheaper to run an independent circuit than to replace the DRL module. Now I need advice on replacing the rear shocks. The top mount looks like a real bear to get to.

I found this site when I was looking for some info on the 94 xlt that I got for free(can you beat that?)and I haven't been able to stop! I now want to put some height in my suspension, put a set of 35s under it, and possibly go SAS! (just in case my wife asks, I'm blaming it all on this site!) I haven't done any serious modding yet, but I've replaced/somewhat rebuilt my tranny using mostly the information that Glacier had in his threads,(awesome write-ups, by the way Glacier) and I think that's what finally gave me the bug that everyone refers to when they talk about starting their project. When I finally get started on it, I'll make sure to do a step-by-step with photos, so that maybe I'll be able to help someone, too. I reccommend this site to every explorer owner that I run across. Keep up the great job!!

Hey guys, first time poster here, I had a 92 Navajo my Sr. Year of High School and loved it right up until the week before graduation when it was totaled by a truck that failed to yield at a left turn.

Now, almost 8 years later I find a 94 Navajo with only 54K miles on it, and bought it just a couple days ago. I typed in my SUV's make model followed by the words air conditioner, and this was one of the search results generated by goggle, it was also the most useful. I book marked the result and returned to the same place today to read more and only then did I notice it was an active forum. I also noticed it was a vbulltin format. I am already very familiar with this format, I already know the codes and how to do this that and the other, I am a long time member another on-line community {actually make that two vB communities}.

With the fan motor being ruled out as the culprit last week end I am still engaged in my week end quest to figure out why my auto air suddenly decided to quit working {besides the fact it is August in Texas = when else would it} I figured suggestions searches would be quicker from the inside as opposed to the out side. Not as exciting as some previous responses but the truth none the less.

My dear friend Sabrina (Gotford here) was flirting with a Ranger owner who was about to paint his truck and mentioned how her friend had "just had stripes painted on her Explorer"... he told her about this place and she sent me the link. To say this board has changed my life is a GROSS understatement :D

The very first Explorer I found near me was identical to my own, right down to the stripes... except it was lifted. The rest, as they say, is history ;)

Slightly irregular huh? Cables & springs. Shaved handles, :nono: for what?

I always drove a F150 but as I got older I wanted something a little more comfortable and car-like. Now I have a 2002 Expl XLT and I love her! She reminds me of my old cuttin' horse -looks pretty and cuts tight corners. Hope to learn more about her from you all.

I have to say that the thread on "Hercules" is the funniest thing I have ever read in my life. There was a link to it posted in the YotaTech forum. I had no idea what I was getting into when I clicked on that link.

Gerald, I don't know ya, but I swear we have to be kin to each other! I had a similar experience sitting on a car battery while working on a carb. Battery sized blisters on your butt isn't to funny either unless it is someone else's butt that's blistered.

Thanks! When I fix my Explorer up, I'll post pics. Right now, it's pretty rough. The fuel gauge doesn’t work, to start the thing you have to push a button under the hood, the fuel pump doesn’t always shut off when you turn the vehicle off, the front driver side brake sometimes locks up for no reason, none of the electric seat adjustment switches work, and it's stuck in 2WD. :(

To be honest, it was probably about 8 years ago when I found this site. I originally owned a 2 wheel drive 1999 Ford Explorer Sport. This site seemed at the time more of only for the off road enthusiast. So I actually sold that explorer about a year ago and purchase the on I have now. I have I always been into off road, and kinda wish that I read up a little more here, I now no I could of converted my older Explorer to 4x4 with a SAS. Well the harm done though, I really like my 4dr with all the options and is a little more practical with having a kid.

My Explorer stopped idling yesterday. Doesn't start without depressing the gas pedal and dies when you let off instead of idling. I Googled the problem and this site popped up. I see a lot of posts about the IAC which I suspected after looking at it this evening.

I use similar forums for my Ferguson tractor and Venture/Macgregor sailboat. Places like this are great for sharing knowledge. This seemed so good for the problem I have that joining is the only thing that makes sense.

Thanks to everyone who has already contributed to my problem. Now, if it only turns out to be what needs to be fixed!

John

How can this be? Do you mean to tell me there are others who won't think me...well, ODD because I have such a deep appreciation for my truck? Cool.

I found this site while looking for a mild lift kit for my '92 Sport.

While I'm here, though; anybody else wonder about the connection some people have to their vehicles? I think much of it has to do with the circumstances under which you found and acquired it. I had just moved back to Colorado (9500') when I bought my truck. It had 54K miles on it and is now over 200K!
That's a few adventures!

In fact, there was this one time when....oh wait. Family site.

Searching for Ford Automatic transmission advice is how I found this site. I've rebuilt engines and transmissions for many years. I haven't been in a Ford 5r55e so I had questions. Now after a dynometer test, I had more questions. Since this is a carry in bench rebuild I have no way of actually knowing what occurred with the failure in the vehicle. After rebuild, I had no 4th or 5th. solenoids and wiring all tested good. Checking out the valve body and will have tranny shop air test plate the trans with valve body off. No real major internal damage of hard parts found during first tear down. Just the usual burnt clutches. No blown valvebody gaskets. Wrecker service that removed trans said the vehicle was making a metal to metal sound. Replaced torque convertor and shop will flush or replace cooler on vehicle. So this site is a very helpful site for Ford information. Keep up the good work people!!!

I did a search on google for "1993 ford explorer specifications", trying to figure out how much oil it was using, i was 16 at the time, and wanted to do my first "real oil change", you know, where you crawl under it, do it all yourself, and i didn't want to put to much or to little oil in it.
