As posted in "Serious Explorations": A group of us just got back from The San Diego (CA) area "Tierra Del Sol" (TDS) Jeep Club's 39th annual Desert Safari. (See the post for the details). The numbers are IMPRESSIVE! Also impressive was the very high level of organization and coordination the TDS club has done for this event. This event requires a great deal of communication, ranging from getting the check points into place, then shut down, the various run trails patrolled, and "swept" for stragglers and lost souls, food and water, and yes, unfortunately dispatching Emergency Medical Care for a couple of unfortunate folks, just to name a few. They used a very efficient asnd reliable radio system: HAM RADIO, not CB. All the "official" communications, between run leaders and "Tailgunners", Check Points, Officials.and all, was handled on 2 Meter, FM Simplex. I monitored the traffic on their main coordinating channel for several hours. Apparently, a very large number of the TDS members, who serve as the Officials for this event are Hams, and this event really demonstrated how well ham radio goes with offroading.
