has anyone thought of putting the 4.9 six from the f150 in the explorer. i dont know how much longer than a v8 it is but if it fit all you would have to do is reprogram the computer for a straight instead of a v and you get almost as much displacement as the v8.

i dont know much about inline six's but i always thought they were longer than most v8's. if your gonna go throuhg wiht an engine swap you would be doin better to go with a 302, from what ive heard its not that hard of a swap

put in a 351 instead. it uses the same block as a 302

The 4.9L 6 is a long engine! Not worth the thought either. Its much more smart thinking just to go with a 302/5.0l. I used to run a 4.9l in an old F150 I had, strong motor, but freaking huge!

A 300-6 would be a great off-road motor because it has gobs of torque and a very flat torque curve. It's almost like a small diesel. Just keeps on pulling. But to put one in an Exploder you'd have to relocate the radiator and hack the radiator support to make room. On a ranger you could put the radiator in the bed but I don't know where you would put it on a Expy.

does any one know of the actual length of the block?

The 4.9 liter V6 is too long to fit into the explorer with out some major modification. It is not worth the effort unless you are a wiring genius and just want to be different. Just put a 302 in it , it is easier and you can make more power with it. Also for the guy who said the 302 was the same bock as a 351 you are wrong. It is totally different and about 2 1/2 inches wider with heads on. It will not fit right with out as many modifications as as putting a 4.9 in it.

i said it. and the base block i believe is the same. the heads are not part of the block.

Hate to prove anybody wrong but...
The cylinder deck on the block of a 351 is 2.5" taller. This is where the extra displacement comes from. It also make the block wider and slightly taller. The heads on a 302/351 are the same size as well as the intake.

thanks cougarx. for some reason, yours post did seem so insulting to me as the other guys. just bruised my ego a little bit.
