View Full Version : Expeditions? Tommy2000 03-12-2001, 11:09 AM Anyone know anything about Ford Expeditions? I need some more room than my Sport has, and thinking that a lifted Expedition would be really kicka$$... Any input? mattadams 03-12-2001, 02:47 PM I've seen some lifted expeditions and they are SWEET!!! I almost got one but couldn't justify the difference in cost between the F-150 and the Expedition, especially since I'm single with no prospects and no kids or family that would ever need rides or anything. Jefe 03-12-2001, 03:13 PM My dad has owned two expeditions, and the only thing I don't like about them is that the 2wd (not sure about 4wd) suspesion is so car/minivan like, even after he put KYB shocks on. I have yet to see one lifted, but I know there are lifts out there, and I think it'd look great. Ricardo Miramontes 03-12-2001, 03:30 PM Lifted Expeditions look soooooo sweet!!! I've seen so many here in San Diego California that they're becoming a trend now. I kind of consider the Expedition like the Explorer's Bigger brother who'll back up the Explorer when needed. They look Massive!!! Flounder 03-12-2001, 03:52 PM When it's time for the Explorer to go, I think I'm going into a F-150 Super Crew. I like the four full doors while maintaining the basic Truck structure. And the 2002 Explorer isn't going to keep me loyal to the Explorer line, and while the Sport Trac is nice, I am not over zealous about the looks. A friend has a 2000 F150 SC Lariat, Wedgewood Blue with tan accents, interior loaded (leather, moonroof, 5.4L V8, Off Road and Towing Package, CD changer, 3.55LS), 4x4, everything but the rear entertainment center (LCD screen, VCP) since it's either that or the moonroof. I've seen a few lifted F-150s and love the look. I like the idea of a Super Crew lifted, and it would look just as nice as an Expedition. It'd look even nicer with a PIAA air dam and lights like Matt's. :) If I were you, I'd go Super Crew if you want to keep the 4 door integrity but have a "rugged" look. I think that the Expedition, while rugged, has been somewhat lowered in its appeal (at least to me) since it's now a minivan-Suv for most people, like the Explorer. But, I guess give the SC time and it, too, will be soccer-ized. Tommy2000 03-12-2001, 03:54 PM I went and drove a 97 Eddie bauer at lunch today, with the bigass v8....Man, that thing was way faster than the 4.3 or whatever other v8 they put in 'em....really nice ride with only 51k mi on it...kinda thinking about geting it...I wonder what insu is like on them? Stephen S 03-12-2001, 03:55 PM I really like the look of a lifted Expedition. There's a nice lifted green one with a roof rack, guards and lights on it around where I used to live and it looks great! I like them! Pemerling 03-12-2001, 08:35 PM its a 5.0 V8 TheMissin'Link 03-12-2001, 08:43 PM There's an Expedition that is constantly parked near where I work, and it is AMAZING! It's a really nice royal blue color with some pretty heavily tinted windows, and then it has a lift with 33x12.50 Thornbirds on it!...It looks awesome! I know that if I had the money for something like that, I would do it in a second. The other cool thing that i noticed were some pretty heavy-duty skid plates that this guy had added. It was quite obvious to me that he did some offroading with it, so it seems to be a pretty capable vehicle. My vote is deifnitely in favor of the Expedition! mattadams 03-12-2001, 08:44 PM well actually the expeditions come with either a 5.4L V8 or a 4.6L V8 or a 4.2L V6 engine. My 2000 F-150's got the 5.4L I LOVE IT! Power comin out the ass... or exhaust as it were :) Dannyboy 03-12-2001, 09:00 PM The only thing I have seen bad about Expeditions is rollover. My buddy drove through a snowstorm in Iowa. There were tons of cars in the ditches and the only rolled were Expiditions, two of them. I have seen pics in a Performance products catalogue with lifts they look good. Prices are about $1500 for the lift go off road 03-12-2001, 09:04 PM I guy at my work has a super charged 5.4L Expedition it is one bad truck, it will keep up with a Power Strokes and Dodge Ram V10s pulling hills and towing. They are very cool trucks. Wade Pemerling 03-12-2001, 10:55 PM i was talking about the explorer Tommy2000 03-13-2001, 08:35 AM Well, I called my agent yesterday, b/c I am kinda leaning twoards getting this Expedition, and the insurance is actually not that bad at all...It ends up bieng like $200 more a year or something...that is not too bad, considering... I am gonna go drive it again at lunch, and see what I think...again :D: I was looking at the Performance Products catalog last night to see what toys I would not be able to afford, and there sure are a lot of them... bluethunder 03-13-2001, 08:51 AM i think that lifted expeditions look REALLY good, so i say go for it!!! you could probably fit some pretty big meats under one of those with a nice lift. Tommy2000 03-13-2001, 08:57 AM That is what I was thinking...one of the main reasons I kept my explorer so long is actually this site. Bieng in software, I feel that support is so key, and having a resource like this site to come to is huge... So how the hell am I gonna find out what size meats will fit on this thing? It comes with 17" rims, would it look stupid with 15" rims? 17" tires are about a million dollars each... mattadams 03-13-2001, 09:02 AM Not only would 15"s look stupid, you won't be able to put them on. You'd have to put on 16"s if you wanted some huge ass tires since no one really makes much for the 17" rim (I know, I've got it on my F-150) but you can fit about 33" tires with no rubbing at all, you could put on 35"s with a sligh body lift or some minor fender trimming. I say good luck with yoru Expedition! By the way, f150online.com is a great resource for expedition info (since expeditions are basically f-150's with a cab, all the other components are the same). I think you'll like it! bluethunder 03-13-2001, 09:48 AM why wont 15" rims fit on there? mattadams 03-13-2001, 09:53 AM because the brake drums are bigger then 15"s as I recall... a 15" wheel isn't even an option on the F-150's and expeditions are either 16" or 17" rims. I think a 16" would be better then a 15" anyways. gijoecam 08-03-2001, 08:41 PM Bump-itty-bump... they're 4 wheel discs.... have been since 99, I believe. The smallest OE rims on them I believe are 16s, but I think they make aftermarket 15s that will fit and clear the rotor... I've seen them.... What did you end up getting? Just curious.... -Joe- Tommy2000 08-03-2001, 11:19 PM What a trip to get an email about a thread I posted so long ago!!! Well, so here is the story... I **DID** end up getting a '97 Eddie Bauer expie, with the 5.4L engine... I also ended up trading my 93 Sport (more on that below), as well as a '91 EB Explorer. (more on that below also. I absolutely LOVE the Expedition, but it is a different animal... It is not a perfect product, however. For more detail, read on. CAUTION-I am about to ramble, so click outta here if ya are not interested. Here is the deal. I strongly feel that the explorer is a far superior product for many reasons, some of which I will touch on. For one thing, the seats are just plain not as comfortable. This is a common complaint with expie owners, I have found. I also think that the fit and finish is better on the explorer line, but this is not to say that the Expedition is not a good product, it rocks! Just like the explorers, the stock shocks are junk, drive it home and throw them away. ( I have not replaced mine yet, and I cringe everyday when I drive it). The 5.4 L engine is a monster...you won't win many races with it stock, but throw on a cat-back, a chip, and an intake kit, and you are good to go! I LOVE the extra room; it is so cool to be able to load up for the weekend, and have both dog kennels in back (with rear AC, mind you) and all my tools and the cooler etc etc etc and still be comfortable... In low gear 4x4, you could possibly pull anything out of anywhere, man what a grunter! These things weigh a lot. Period. So, here is what happened. The fiance wanted a truck, b/c she is driving a little honda 2 door shitbox, even though it is new, is still a shitbox. (Anything I can drive over without a lift kit is a shitbox!:D ) So, being the good guy I am, I go out and find a nice used '91 Eddie Bauer Explorer, one owner that needed a little TLC. Well, waaadaya know, she doesn't like it 'cause the shocks are worn out etc etc and she ends up driving my '93 sport. Well, that got old quick; I LOVED my 93 sport, and I miss it a lot! So push comes to shove, and I traded in both Explorers in on the Expedition... So, what I have learned is this... I get 12.5 MPG, regardless. I have tried driving differently, highway, added an Airaid intake kit yadda yadda yadda. This seems to be about the average from the folks I have talked to that own these. My salesguy lied, and I am sure he will burn in hell for it, but my point is that this is lower than the 17 I got in my sport. So that sucks. Insurance is just about the same. So that is cool. People move the HELL outta my way now, when they are poking along in the left lane and they see me coming...I think that is worth my 5MPG that I lost! :D This is NOT an offroad vehicle. Not stock anyway. Too damn big, and too damn expensive. This is one of the main reasons I miss my 93 Sport- That thing could get through anything around here, and the paint was all off-road-scratched anyway, so who cares if it got scratched more? Also, total replacement cost on that thing was way less than this vehicle...So needless to say I had more fun in it... My fiance used to encourage off-road excursions, now, no dice at all. So, in a small nutshell, that is the deal. I think all in all, if you have an explorer that you have tweaked, and that you love, stick with it. Both of my Explorers had almost 200, 000 miles on them and they were fine...If you need the room, or make a lot of roadtrips, or have a long drive to work, however, an expedition may be for you. Also, aftermarket stuff costs more for this rig...can you believe that a stupid lift kit is like $1500??? And then you have installation on top of that. Needless to say, that blows. Well, I think that is all of my 2pennies worth... T Epilogue- I bought 16" rims and I plan on putting at least 33" ATko's on them... The fiance, (who originally thought they were the ugliest vehicle on this plannet), now insists that the SportTrack is the wourlds coolest vehicle, and she must have one... kickass!!!:) Miracles never cease! My buddy just bought a '98 with the smaller engine...WHAT A SLOW DOG!!! So, I give him crap all the time about that. Hey, email me with questions, if ya got 'em. T Oh, we are getting the Sport Trac this fall for her. ;) Tekeman 08-04-2001, 07:04 PM They rock, but here's why I didn't get one - went with the X instead, Cost, Couldn't find anything under $20K Mileage, 16 in the x is bad enough Insurance, not really a factor bu tmay be more Size, felt like driving a schoolbus looking in that rearview and don't know if I really need that much size. it does piss me off, though, that there are so many aftermarket parts avail. that's just the F150 platform for ya BislamJoe 08-05-2001, 03:31 PM When the first Expeditions made it to the local dealership, my mom went and looked at one. Bought a tan XLT 2wd with the 5.4L, towing pkg. (reciever hitch, 3.73LS i think), 6-cd changer, a couple other goodies. I learned to drive on my '93 Explorer and that Expedition, so it doesn't feel too big to me. We've put 109k on the Expedition, and the only trouble we've had is the tranny. It needs rebuilding. But that's my fault, since in my stupider days I'd race friends with it on days when mom gave me the keys to "the big truck" and did a couple of neutral drops, probably tore it up. But it seems to handle pretty good and it's pretty quick for something that big. I'd like a slightly built-up 4x4 Expedition. Great vehicle though. BTW - We usually get about 18 mpg with it, just running regular unleaded. Hell, we've gotten as good as 32 on the highway when it was about 6 mos. old.
