View Full Version : Explorer roll-Over
sohowcome 03-20-2001, 04:17 PM First off anything in here i say is not Ford bashing at all. I love Explorers with all my heart...... here is my story..... This is a 1996 Edie Bauer almost all stock (some motor mods)....... I have used it for off-roading. I was driving back to bloomington last fathers day when i had a blowout in the front left on a off-ramp of I-74 (this is after i had been driving 100+mph for 1+ hours) I was going the speed limit on the ramp though, but there was to much tire heat so i had a blowout...the vehicle proceed to roll 6-8 times down the ramp and into a ravine where it land right side up. thank God for seatbelts. Under investigation by an investigator the sway bar bolt had rusted off the vehicle. When the tire blew-out there was nothing there to keep the truck stable enough to control. I did receive my recall leter about 4 weeks ago, which was a just a tadge late for my tastes.......... I have always been a ford lover.... everyone can make mistakes is how i view it I do hope they learn fromthem though and I think they have with the newer Explorers. Anyone have any ideas what i can make out of it now ??
heheh anyone need a slightly scratched sunroof??

JDraper 03-20-2001, 06:24 PM Welcome to the rollover club!!! There are a few of us here that have been there (although my wife rolled mine) Hope you got all healed up, and I'm real glad you had the seatbelt on. Yours definintely got it worse than mine. I could still drive mine, but I'm still parting it out. (No collision on mine, and the guy who caused the accident took off). Check out mine under Moron Jeep Owner...
PS. Are you planning on another explorer?? I know you had problems, but I still think they are great vehicles.
sohowcome 03-20-2001, 06:29 PM Yeah getting a new explorer hopefully........
riffy is going to help me with mods...........I am still not sure if that is a great idea but we will see.... *grin he tends to spend a lot of money ----->tightwad
I saw that roll-over very impressive :)
JDraper 03-20-2001, 06:38 PM I was suprised how well the roof held up on mine. I'd heard that the roof came in real easy on the exploders, but it only took out about 6" of the passenger's side on mine. I seriously thought about rebuilding it, but once I looked at the $$$ I went out and bought a 2001 Explorer.
RobbieJ 03-20-2001, 10:59 PM T hose look like firestones to me I'll get some pics of my blow out and roll over due to fire stone up soon. Lawsuit!! Robbie J
CougarX 03-20-2001, 11:23 PM Damn, that sucks.
Lets see, what can be salvaged??
- 2 wheels
- 1 trailer ball
- 1 very lucky driver
Don't you just love Crapstone tires??
jimbo74 03-20-2001, 11:39 PM hey can i join the rollover club? i didnt go all the way over but i did get on the passenger side and no wheels were on the ground. it cost over $10,000- to fix
sohowcome 03-21-2001, 09:27 AM jim,
you got pics of the roll over??? .... I was thinking about making a buggy out of it?? dont know if it would be worth all the effort prying all the pieces off to do it though..........
yob_yeknom 03-21-2001, 11:08 AM All I can say is D@MN you are lucky to be alive!!

J. Kennedy 03-25-2001, 07:07 PM Search my posts for rants on this before.
I replaced the cracked left front end link when I bought my 95 used in 98. I was surpised as it was a soccer moms grocery getter. The new one was different than the old, but the dealership did not know why, and it fit, so I left it.
The drivers front went last fall. I go on dirt , mud and snow covered roads, but never truly "off" road. I went to the dealer to get another one and asked them what the story was. The parts manager insisted it was just a coincidence but the kid behind the counter did not even have to look it up on the computer. He said he sells a TON of those.
So I brought it in anyway when I got the recall notice, bitched, and they replaced both of them anyway!
You think there would be a red Bat phone on the parts counter connecting to the recall department! I mean it is an obvious safety issue!
I love my rig, handles great in the snow, the perfect color & options for me. I hate shopping for cars. I will never buy a Ford again. The customer service gives a bad name to incompitent beaurocracies.
