Hello everyone. I recently purchased my first Ford product and am satisfied so far. I currently have a 95 4wd XLT 4 door with the regular OHV 4L engine. I would like to pull it out and install either the the more powerfull SOHC or even go with a 5.0.
If I decided to go with the SOHC could I use the same ECM, tranny? Are there any other things that I would have to change, modify or fabricate to complete this swap.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Welcome to the site!
Here are my suggestions: either get the 5.0 or put a blower on your 4.0 OHV. If you're already going to do an entire engine swap, the 5.0 will be the more worthwile project. The SOHC would need a new ECU and tranny, and doesn't justify the swap as much as the V8.
Your other option is to put a supercharger on your OHV. I'd recommend the BBK Instacharger kit. I have one, and it works great! I have it tuned up to 200+ rwhp and 250+ rwtq. This equates to 260+ and 320+ at the crank respectively. That's about what you'll get out of a lightly modded 5.0 that you swap in, but with great (30 mpg hwy) economy, reliability, and comfort. This will also come out cheaper than the 5.0. The entire project, including other recommended mods (headers, exhaust, throttle body, intake kit) will run about $5000. If your engine has less than or around 60k miles, I'd definately do this. If the OHV engine has more miles than that, I'd definately give it a VERY good tune up and gasket overhaul before the blower.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I am a little hesitant on putting the 5.0 in due to lack of space in the engine compartment, I don't want to have to pull the motor out every time I change plugs and wires.
My current engine has 100k and I don't know the life expectancy of the 4.0 thats why I was inquiring. The superchareger sounds like the better option ( i'd be doing it on a fresh motor with a mild cam of course). How is the low end torque with a charger? Do you think it will give me enough low-end grunt to make it through rough terrain.
