The clear coat on my Green/Tan '91 EB is fading fast and it is time to look at a repaint. The last clear coat painted vehicle that I had redone (back in '92) lasted only three years before it failed.

Have they made improvements in paints/repainting to where I could expect to get 6+ years out of a repaint in such a harsh environment such as South Florida? Or would I be better off just painting the whole beast the EB tan color (non clear coat paint) and going for the rat patrol/military style?

The rat patrol style would give me a good excuse to take FMExplorers 3" body lift and gears. Get some nice black rims with 33's. dual shocks, duff lift kit, winch,..........(aw my wife is going to kill me...there goes her new kitchen)

Best regards.

I don't know exactly how long you can expect the clearcoat to last, but they have made major improvements in it. Back in the early '90s it was still kind of new and wasn't the greatest stuff in the world. (as you can tell) Now it lasts longer and is a lot better than regular paint.

I had mine repainted about 1.5 years ago and where the clearcoat had originally came off, the new paint is fading fast(and in some places peeling off). I got the warranty for the life of the car, soI just have to take it back and they will redo it again. I think they tried to skimp on the sealer and it's smacking them back in their face. Do it right the first time guys(talking to the shop where it was done) or pay for it to be done again. Guess I'll get yet a new paint job this summer too.

Make sure they stip the paint and seal it, then repaint or else you'll be going back like me.

Definitely get them to sand through as much as they can. Down to the factory primer if they will. The less old paint, the better. Don't go cheap on the paint either. Get the better quality stuff they have. DuPont, PPG, and Martin Senour all have had good results on vehicles I have/helped painted.

Thanks guys,

I'm still convinced that a repaint will never last as long as the original shot. I have a couple of estimates lined up over the next few days. I'll see what they have to say, but after playing the redo game (like Goober) on my last vehicle I am leaning towards an all tan old fashioned acryllic. The sun is really brutal down here.

I was originally looking for a white Exp. The EB was just an impulse purchase..

Best regards.

Speaking of fading paint, the roof of my '96 is starting to fade, especially the part between the front of the sunroof to the top of the windshield. Any ideas??
