The system is on my 98 Escort, but air conditionning should almost be the same as Explorer. I dont have the push button like on my 94 Exp, so the damn thing goes ON when ever it wants (defrost) or when I select it. But here the catch, when I put it into vent/floor position, IT GOES ON. I spoke to Ford about this and was about to service it for that problem, but and advisor told me it was normal (dont tell me!). So here my question, how would I go about the system and put a switch to activate the compressor WHEN I WANT.

pretty much all cars are like that, even the 95+ explorers work the same way. the vent position should allow opperation without turning on the compressor. BTW, the defrost position on all explorers should run the A/C too, if it doesn't then there is something wrong at the controler.

I'd put a switch in the a/c clutch power line, it would override it, but you may void a warantee that way

I dont care about it any more, it's out, I have 60435KM and the waranty is for 3 years or 60000KM. I will stil try to hide it because I have taken an extention to 120000KM, but this one is not a full cover. I will make somkind of removable switch, so if ever something break down it can be put out. I will look at Haynes for electrical and finally take control of my car. Thanks

If you're going to switch it, the a/c clutch power line is the way to go, like FordLover said. You might want to check how much power the clutch draws. If it draws a lot of current, you might want to install a relay to isolate the switch.
