I have read some magazine articles recently as well as read some threads on some forums that indicated that the 8.8 in almost all cases is a 28 spline on any axle manufactured before 95 when they got disc brakes.

Is this true or not? Im looking at some 91 and 92 axles with drums but Im not interested if they arent the 31 splined variety.

If both were offered before 95, what do I look for; is there certain axle codes that denote whether or not they are the 31 splines? pls advise. thanks

also, was there any particular year or type of explorer when the 4.10 gearsets were offered? I believe thats axle codes D2 or 42, correct?

Thanks, all-knowing Explorer dudes!!!

I'd like to start off by welcoming you to the site. You'll find any info, on the explorer, or any other 4x4 all right here.

First off I'd like to give you a few names. As of late several J@@pers have been putting the 8.8 from the explorer into their rigs. Take a look for their user names and maybe give them a email. joef753, Jeffh555, satan, Hellbender, and I'm sure there's others.

Now onto your questions. ALL Ford Explorer 8.8 axle splines are 31 no matter what year. Some of the late Rangers cames with a 28, but the explorer never did. You are also correct stating the years they came with drums and disks. Many users have swaped a 8.8 out of their late explorers(91-94) with a newer one with disks. I myself would look around and wait till you can find an 8.8 out of a newer explorer and get the disks, but the older ones are easier to find in the bone yards.

As for the Axle codes and the 4.10. You got it on the D2 code. 4.10 with a limited slip. That's your best bet, although a 42 will work too(minus the LS) The LS in the 8.8 is much different from the factory that many J@@p LS. Ford put a LS in the rear that is built for use, unlike many comments from what I've heard on the J@@p LS.

Any other questions just ask away. We're more than happy to help. :)
