View Full Version : My (enter your favorite explicit) Check Engine Light

So I finally got around to it. My check engine light has been going on and off for about a year now. It has gotten worse and worse
Only engine mod was a drop in K&N
It occasionaly came on then I added new plugs.
The old ones were gapped totally wrong. So I put in 6 new ones gapped at .054 and now then that stupid light was on more than before. That didn't help, but no performance change
So then I added new plug wires.
That didn't change anything
So then I took it to a mechanic and paid $50 for it to go away for about 3 weeks, he said they tested the O2 and it was OK. With 110,000 miles I should probably change it anyway, but I want to fix this not guess
So I clean the MAF following procedures found here and it didn't come on as quick as usual but still came on D*mnit I thought I had it.
I had it fixed with electric tape over the light for the past 2 months then I figured I should try. try again to make it right.
I am so D*MN confused I dont want to take it to the Dealers
I have these codes though
186- injector pulse width high or mass air flow too low
332- Exhaust gas recirculation valve not opening
(EVP/PFE/DPFE)
that is the crap my mechanic gave me to work on for future reference. I cant believe these jackasses couldnt get it on their first and second try.

just take out the little bulb in the instrument cluster and you'll never be bothered by it again.

What replace these? What will this cost and which first?
I would just rip the light out of the dash, but if It is running rich because of this I am not solving anything
I forgot to mention that it runs ok but sometimes bogged down. After I cleaned the MAF it bogged no more. I also disconnected the battery for about an hour to clear the codes, will that do it?

For the 186 code I really can't help but it does look a little bit like the MAS is on the fritz, sometimes things are just broken and no amount of cleaning will help. There probably isn't much of a chance that you could borrow an MAS?

Look to http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=28929&highlight=EGR for help with the 332 code.

EGR valve is either shot or plugged.

Remove, clean, replace.

If it still does that, replace the o2's.

The mass air flow code is bogus.

You guys are brilliant, my brother has a 93 xlt with like only 60,000 miles. What should I temporarly swap to find the problem?

And does the fuel run rich or is that a myth. I get 9-11 mpg city and I think it should be way better even with my 32's and 100lb. foot

If you are running rich with those codes reclean the MAF cheack the FPR and and /or clogged cats especially with bogging down.

I forgot to mention that the bogging is gone and the truck runs sweet. I think cleaning the MAF helped that. As for the light coming off someone mentioned driving like 20 miles to help it reset. Do I want to disconnect the battery again to reset it 2 days later?
My next step will be to swap MAF's with my brother's but if I am not resetting the computer properly then I will still get the light

Disconnect battery for aboot(I'm watching hockey) 30 mins
Then reconnect and drive under normal conditions for aboot 20 miles.

If you swap out MAF's you should lather rinse and repeat the steps.

Let us know
