View Full Version : Weight Capacity of Cargo Cover, Rolled Up??

Hi! Just a quick question: Does anyone know approximately how much weight can be put on that cargo cover, when it's rolled up? Like so that it doesn't sag, fall off, or get ruined. I don't have one in my Ex, but I was thinking of buying one (they're cheap on eBay) and using it as a Saddle Rack! My saddle weighs about 15 pounds; too heavy? Thanks!

I have the cover (hardly ever use it but it's not for sale). I wouldn't but an object weighing 15 pounds on it. Don't forget, every time time your Explorer bounces, that 15 pounds becomes a lot more.

The cover is really nothing but a roll-up blind. If I would be you I would look into one of those bars people put into passenger vehicles to hang their clothes on.

On the other hand, if I remember correctly from my riding days, saddles don't stay very well on skinny bars. Bet when you accelerate or brake, the thing will fall off.

I used to have fun trying to fit a western saddle into a Porsche. Luckily I didn't take it very far very often. Going to shows, it normally went into the trailer with horse and otherwise I kept it at the stable in the tack room.

15 pounds , must be a english saddle , so if you have the seats down I would think you could hang your saddle off it.

Can you just put your saddle over the rear seat back? I would not trust that cargo cover. it's only plastic thats spring loaded.

yeah, anything more than the weight of a pencil (*exageration*) will make that cover sag. its really not meant for holding anything, its meant to cover stuff.

If I remember right, I did actually bend mine a little bit once. It didn't take any pressure to bend it, nor to bend it back. It still works, but it takes a little coaxing to get it to wind up. I wouldn't use it for anything other than a cover.

15lbs does seem really light for a saddle, and no, it wouldn't stay on a pole while driving. You should try to find or build something wider, at least as wide as the tree.

Okay, so my idea was a bad one. I'd never actually looked at one of these covers, so I had no clue of it's weight baring ability. I was planning on bungee cording the saddle to the cargo net hooks and maybe the door handle(?) so that it wouldn't go flying! Maybe I'll have to do a little work here to make something stronger.

Yes, it is an English saddle, 15 lbs!

Thanks!!
