wondered what the opinions were on the best place to put a gas can. I was thinking of the trunk hatch, but the metal looks kind of thin/weak

You know where the trailer ball would go on the back bumper. Put a tall skinny rectangular gas can there. I've seen it done but didn't see where they strapped it to. Good Luck.

I carry an empty can 24/7, but I fill it up for wheeling trips. When it's full, I strap it to my roof rack. That keeps it away from possible impacts and keeps the fumes out of the interior.
