View Full Version : compliments on my truck

i got a few compliments about my truck this week. one was from a coworker who asked if i drove that black explorer. i told him ya. he then asked me how i could afford it. i told him i work here, and i cut grass on the side. He was saying how he liked rims and the way it looked so far with the grille and whatnot. he even made a mention about the new bumper and the intake i have on my truck. i was pretty proud to own a pimped out explorer!

not to be so self centered, anyone else get people who say stuff about their x's? im sure they do, lets post some of it

yeah, since i made a few mods to my X, i've gotten a bunch of comments. guys at the tire place, the ford dealership, valet parking guys, coworkers, random people that i run into... it's pretty cool to differentiate an otherwise common truck.

I have the "mystery" job at my company. Nobody there including managment has a clue as to what I do. However they know I own two explorers and I have heard the comment of I wish I had his job so I could afford 2 explorers. I got great cash deals on both of them and most of the people who dont pay any attention to explorers think my 93 is about 8 years newer than it is.

What I like about mine is all the rubber-necking people do when they see it! I'll be waiting at a stoplight and someone will be going thru the intersection and they'll slow WAY down to get a better look!!!!

Going to Checker Auto or Napa for parts is also a good one for people coming up asking how (and WHY?!?) I did my X this way.

My Boss owns a 2000 Explorer so of course he came out into the parking lot to check it out!!!! I've told him about this Forum but haven't seen or heard from him on here yet.

The really cool thing is the head shaking I see when I tell 'em "It's got it's own Web Site!" I just wish the web site was cooler than it is...Nothing fancy, like some of the guys/gals on here have....(sigh)

my trucks get plenty of attention as well and I love it :). I get more in the Explorer then the F-150, I think thats ebcause of hte awesome lift :). I love taking either of them places to have them worked on it though.
I took my Explorer to Discount Tire to get the tires rotated/balanced. All the people in all 6 bays (including the manager) came over to check out the explorer and continued to check it out until one of the customers started yelling, then they went back to work :). I also took it to Phil Long Ford for my complimentary oil change one time, and same thing, everyone working in almsot all the bays came over to check it out, the different mods, all that stuff.

I too got compliments on the Sport Trac rims and 265/70 tires. Also people ask me how I could afford a new Explorer and I tell them it's not new, thats it's a '95 with 106,000 miles on it and they just stand there suprised. Most say they wouldn't have guessed it was older then a year or two.

Anybody who gets inside usually comments saying how wonderful the inside and outside looks for a '95, how clean and shiny it is. But most of them have newer vehicles that look like crap since they dont take much care of them. But I do get alot of peoples parents that get in it and say "What year did you say this was??" I'll tell them and they'll raise their eyebrows and say "Wow, it looks really really good for being a few years old" or somethin like that. Makes me feel good and push to make it better :)

And now whenever ANY parent or adult sees the subs in back, they freak out. My uncles all stand there and say "What the hell are those?? Grant, you gotta be crazy" And the aunts and other women bug out their eyes and say "Oh my GOSH! Those are huge! What do you need them for?" :D They just dont understand....

my explorer looks stock on the outside except for the tips. but i still get comments on how its a good lookin truck and what not. however most of the comments i get are along the lines of "holy sh*t! this thing is loud"
haha
and when people get inside my car i always get the "wow blue dome light, howd you do that??"

09-10-2001, 04:45 PM
the local body shop said they wouldnt paint my half sanded grille black because it wont work, thats 3 shops already. im bummed, i gotta get one from someone on here then. that stinks

Yeah, I get the comments. People think my truck is only 2 or 3 years old, when it's a 1994. Of course, they are not Explorer people who can tell the body styles apart.

espnfreak
09-10-2001, 11:09 PM
lol there's a big difference between the 95+ explorers and the 91-94 explorers IMO

Goober
09-11-2001, 09:11 AM
I've received a few comments... the most being ..WHY??
I say why not. Why be the everyday truck? Be something different. Besides, it is a whole lot easier finding my truck in a crowded parking lot :)
Others range from questions about the lift, website, and how well does it drive.
The best compliments are usually given when I tell them it is a 1991 with 180,000 miles and the motor and tranny are still original.......and NO, it hasn't 'flipped' over yet! :)

The #1 comment I usually get is "Hey is that a 4runner? or an expedition?" People messing around since i have that big EXPLORER decal on the front windshield. The only other i usually get is it's pretty quick for an SUV and nice system

Dannyboy

Ford dealer- "Don't mind me asking. Does it drive like crap?" while I was shopping for a brand new truck at a sale, needless to say he won't get my business.
Offroad center- "That thing is a glorified grocery getter, and is not ment to be modified." bet he's jealous I didn't stick the money in his pocket now since I see at least 2 other Explorers in town with small lifts on since I lifted mine.
Past mechanic-"You beat the sh*t out of a truck that has piece of crap parts and a weak four wheel drive system in it, and now you want me to replace stuff you brake because it's my fault. You are nuts" Yeah well that is why I don't take my piece of sh*t to your Sh*t shop any more you stupid SOB. This is Murphy's Frame and Axle on Island Street in LaCrosse, Strongly reccomend not taking an Explorer there to be serviced.

I used to turn a lot of heads around here when I first put the 31's on. I've always gotten compliments on how the Borla sounds. It's a small town though, so everybody knows it's mine and it's nothing new to see anymore. When I go to Roanoke and cruise Williamson I still turn some heads though. :D Definite chick magnet! (Until they see my girlfriend in the passenger seat.)

Oh yeah, I forgot. The guys dealership absolutely love my truck. They always come check it out everytime I go there to get something new for it.

I see a lot of people looking at mine because it is in great condition for a 93 (lotta people think it is a lot newer) and because I have a lot of neons in/on it hehe.
I have 2 15" tubes on the inside, plus 10 feet of neon cable under the dash. I also have a 6 inch neon above the head unit, neon "windshield washer lights" on my hood, and neon fuzzy dice :)

I will be getting more looks soon because I'm putting 4 12s in and putting rims on it/loweiring it and possibly paint.

Beetween my dad and I we own 4 Explorers, three identical, one different. We had the three identical ones together at a storage place and the guy asked why we had three and why we collected them. We said why not?

I've gotten quite a few compliments on my truck. Recently I went to get my tires balanced, and everyone that worked there came over to check it out. Even got one guy interested in lifting his Explorer, and he's gonna pay me to do the spacer/shackle lift for him :) Told him about the site, too.

Can't wait to get the body lift and 32's on there, that should make a big difference. I've noticed that most of the people who take a second look at it now drive 4x4 trucks or Explorers. Get lots of looks from guys driving Z71's and such. After I get some clear corners, make my custom safari bar with two 4 or 5" lights, and a roof rack, I should turn even more heads... ;)

Well, I don't have anything flashy on there, so usually, I get more insults from my friends than compliments : ) Although, I have had a couple people do the "Oh my god, you go off road in your explorer?" And the occasional Jeeper saying my truck can't do anything. Oh well, comes with the territory : )

Rhett
10-09-2001, 07:01 PM
hehe. I have a friend with a Wrangler, and he said the same thing ("your Explorer can't do anything offroad").--but then we went offroad one time, and he shut up about it after that, probably because I had to pull his Jeep out of a ditch there.

Low range is pretty nice.

gotta love it when you stop behind a car at a stop light and everyone in the car looks back at you.....A few weeks ago a biker guy told me at a kwik trip to "turn that sh*t down, I can't hear myself think!", he wasn't too happy, I didn't want to get the you know what beat out of me so I turned it down :)
No one even notices my lift unless I mention it or am next to a stock explorer :(
- Dannyboy, I seen that green EB you were talking about during octoberfest. He has to have like 4" or so cuz he was next to me and was still taller. He must not have a computer because who wouldn't go to explorer4x4.com if you had a lifted explorer?
I never liked murphy's anyways, it took them 4 days to order the right rear gears, how can you order the wrong part 4 times in a row???.....morons

Where are those people that think your x is 5 years newer than it really is when your trying to sell it???

'96explorereddiebauer
10-10-2001, 07:40 AM
Unfortunately for me, I don't get any compliments at all. There're too many Explorers that looks exactly the same here (EB). I guess my truck is too "stocky" for others to notice. But when I get glances, it's usually the kind of evil glance that screams "spoiled kid." :(

ExplorerEddie
10-11-2001, 06:23 AM
That's why you have to do some exterior mods like chrome rims... then they will be saying "spoiled brat!"

'96explorereddiebauer
10-11-2001, 07:41 AM
LOL...I already have chrome rims...it comes with them in the Eddie Bauer version. I love them! I have clear corners installed and a tassel hanging from the interior mirror, NC State sticker here and there, an Oakley decal on the back window, NC State license plate. I'm gonna go home from school this weekend for fall break so I'm gonna go get some beads this weekend and hang them onto my rearview mirror. I think it's different...don't you think??

ExplorerEddie
10-12-2001, 05:31 AM
yeah, most people hang dice but that's cool. I've been looking for a place with a garage so I could put some "jack-me" stickers on my truck, but since I kinda live in the "ghetto" that makes it a prime target for break-ins. What about neon lights? those would look great. I got mine at autozone and they were like 25 bucks and with some basic electrical skills you can hook them up yourself.

'96explorereddiebauer
10-12-2001, 07:39 AM
Neh. My dad doesn't let me put neons or any other kind of lighting on my truck so neon will be a nono for me. Fuzzy dice is too umm...ghetto to me. I don't know, it's just doesn't look right, in my opinion, that is. Oh well, I'm not the attention needy guy anyway. The "evil" glances are enough for me. LOL

ExplorerEddie
10-13-2001, 03:43 AM
yeah I bet you paid for your truck though espnfreak! My truck is too old to put one on. A friend of mine that works at a garage said my engine could handle it for atleast 5 years but I think I will wait until I get a new vehicle to put one on.
96-Would your dad let you put a KKM on? Its only $100 and is far better than a K&N.

Explorer eddie,
whats the difference between KKM and K&N? Is the KKM just an open air filter system?

ExplorerEddie
10-13-2001, 07:26 PM
go to kustomz.com and look at the kkm, it is a conical air filter that fits in the place of your airbox. I'm sure everyone one this site that has it will agree it is well worth the money! The K&N is just a better replacement filter and goes in the airbox.

i've never seen an explorer with stock chrome rims.
my mom's 2000 XLT has the polished rims (i keep telling her to get some nice rims ;) ).

Yep! '95 to early '98's Explorers have the chrome steel rims. If you don't believe me, click on the link in my signature. Or ya know what?? I'll post a pic here so it won't be too much of a bother.

Thats what I was thinking it was. I already have the conical air filter in my airbox. I don't feel good having the filter exposed under the hood. I guess it's just me.

ExplorerEddie
10-14-2001, 06:42 AM
why not? no water or anything will get up there, If it does though, your air filter will be the least of your worries.

01EB5.0
10-14-2001, 10:46 AM
Mostly it is the water/sand issue, but the othr is that it will be suckin ghot engine air when it is open air and the airbox sucks cold outside air. Cool are is supposed to be more efficient.

ExplorerEddie
10-14-2001, 10:57 AM
I understand, but even sucking in hot air I still noticed an improvement over my old k&N and I got that about 3 months before. Also gives you a deeper exhaust. That's cool though, its your decision, right!

was your origional K&N the flat kind or the conicle? cause i have the in box conicle and am trying to see if I will even have much of a gain just taking it out of the box?

10-14-2001, 12:14 PM
i havent really ever gotten any compliments.. except at school. haha. i have only had the tires on 2 weeks, and my license for 3 weeks though. espnfreak arent you jason? why did you change your name

ps. i saw some torsion bar flex from a nissian pathfinder with 35s yesterday at the jamboree and it sucked so bad i will never have a lifted torsion bar truck haha, my twin beams were much better.

oh and i just added pics.

ExplorerEddie
10-15-2001, 06:18 AM
oh, mine was the flat kind. would it be similar to the fipk by k&n, if you took it out of the box wouldn't it pretty much be one? Is see no reason why you can't take it out, I'm sure it will breath easier too. I've never heard of one of those before. Do you have a pic? You should do a search and see if anyone has change to the KKM from that specific one, I'm sure there's some one, otherwise a thread will get some attention. I hope my uneducated guessing helps.
