alright, this just started this morning, so let me give you as much info as I can. Generally the weather in chicago is 60s in the early morning, 70's 80s or 100s in the day. This morning was low to mid 50s...

anyway, i start up my truck to go to school, and I have the radio on, and as im listening to the music I hear this loud ass whirl (or whine) coming from my car, I turn down teh radio and listen and it seems to be a loud whine, it raises in volume/pitch as I go faster.

Well, I figured I would press the 4x4 button for a second to see what it was.. I press it.. the typical clicking goes on, then the thunk, and then the whining just stops. (the engine was running a bit loud today too though).

anyway. I go pick up my gf, and head over to my friends house, and it does it again. a loud clunk, and then a whining sound.

Skip to after school, I back out of my parking spot (4x4 off of course), put it in drive, go maybe 25-50 feet and then I hear that loud whine again.. I stop the car completely (didnt shift to park or anything), hit the gas again and it was gone.

I did this one more time about 30-40 after I got home.

The tranny just had an overhaul from a dependable guy about 3k miles ago, so I dont think thats it, and pressing the 4x4 the first time made it go away.. so im wondering whats up, and how much?

depending on the tone of the whine it could be several things. I have no clue as to why you choose to engage the 4x4, but this gives me a clue. If you still have auto lockouts, they make some wicked noises when they are shot. No big deal because the manuals are cheaper and far stronger. I know this because 1 week after I bought my explorer in 98 I blew a lockout and it was locking and unlocking and just all out FUBARED making tons of noises. The weird part is that when I changed the lockout the noise stopped. A similar thing happened to me about a month ago. I had a tick tick tick coming from the front tire. When I engaged 4x4 it would sometimes go away. Well I took the wheel off, inspected the lockout, and put it back on and Kazam, no more noise and 4x4 still works. I have 4 auto lockouts I am waiting to roach 3 of them and then I too will be converting. I hope this is it as it would be a great relief

I've heard the same noise from my '93 on occasion. I believe it's the hubs. The noise has been very intermittent, no particular circumstances or explantion as to why or when it happens. It hasn't had any effect on the operation of my 4wd.

Since the hubs work on centrifigual force, I try to disengage 4wd while moving in reverse. That way the hubs are less likely to hang up moving forward.

All-

Any idea if the noise I just started getting today is the same thing?
