View Full Version : Is it all in my head?

I might be going crazy, who knows. But all of a sudden my X has been acting up. First my breaks gave out, not completely; they just went soft on me. Then when I was drifting down the road, not accelerating or anything I heard an odd sound, like a twig was clicking again my wheels. But after carefully examining the wheels I saw nothing that could have caused the noise. Under the hood there is water (at least I think its water, I dare not taste it) that has condensated around a black pipe, something I hadn’t noticed before. Also there is a large amount of heat being thrown out of the passenger side of the engine, something I also hadn’t noticed. Now this could just be all in my head, but then again my X could be dieing. Please someone tell me, am I going crazy?

How many miles on the truck?

Everything just doesn't die at once. It's probably just gotten to the point now in which you can't stand it anymore.

Everything just doesn't die at once

This is true. Things die sequentially in the Explorer. Once you fix something, the next thing dies. As soon as you fix that, the next thing goes. Etc, etc, etc. At least that's the way I feel about mine.

peace

Well I just took it in and it turns out my brakes had gone. The disks were totaly worn out. It's got to be the 100 K mile curse. My gas guage just went, now my breaks. What's next.

Were you running the AC? If so, the condensation and heat are normal. Water condensates on the AC line that gets real cold. The other line, which gets really hot, puts out a lot of heat and is on the passenger side.

I have a '94 Ex with about 80,500 miles, and I'm having kind of the same problem. My gas guage died a couple thousand miles ago, I rely on my odometer. And my brakes keep going out too. I'm told my car is just messed up, because what happens is the brake pads wear incredibly quickly to the point where when I try to brake it's metal on metal. I had my brakes redone in June (which was the first time this happened) and I just had them replaced again a couple of weeks ago (under warranty). I went to Just Brakes both times, I'm getting the idea that the first Just Brakes I took it to, the guys were just incompetent. Hopefully I will have no brake problems. Just wanted to let you know I feel your pain.

I had my brakes only replaced 20,000 miles ago. I guess they wear out much faster as time goes on. Which really sucks seeing as they cost so much, expecially with the 4x4.

What happened with me is that one day the brakes just became really, really, really rough, and didn't really stop as well as they should. I ended up driving about another 100 miles on them that day, and I know that didn't help the matter. But I finally took them into a brake place and they said that the pad was gone, it was just metal on metal, so I got them replaced. This was June 13, I remember because it was the day after I got out of school and I kept falling asleep in the waiting room because of the fact that I had been awake for 40 hours straight (and a great party too. But that's another story for another time.) Anyway, so on October 17th, I had to go back to the brake place because I had the same problem. I went to a different place this time. The guy said that the first place I went to didn't even check the back brakes, and because the back brakes were pretty much non-working, all my stopping power was on the front of the car, which really screwed my front brakes. But now that problem's fixed. I hope
