View Full Version : Torsion bars unequal

I am a new member and the proud new owner of my first Explorer, a '97 5.0 AWD , stock with 56K miles. Before I took delivery from the dealer of this used vehicle I requested that they take a look at the slight list to the driver's side. They agreed it was listing somewhat and worked on it. When I picked it up, the list was gone. They had adjusted the torsion bars and then did a front end alignment.
Later while inspecting my new prize in my garage I noticed that they had cranked the driver side t-bar adjust bolt to full lift and backed the pass. side one out most of the way. This seems unusual to me in that I would expect them to be somewhat even in adjustment.
It drives fine (most excellent road feel!), and I see no evidence of accident repair. My gut feeling is that they compensated for a weak driver side leaf spring and therefore had to crank the t-bars opposite to get a satisfactory look. Would this make sense? Perhaps a weak driver's side t-bar?
I would love to just not worry about it but hope to hear from some of you with your thoughts on this before I do.

Thanks.

Welcome to the site!!! You'll find lots of useful and interesting information here.

You might want to do a search on threads about it. I vaguely remember one where someone had a truck with the torsion bars installed wrong. One of them was installed with the torsion bar rotated by one flat. They took the bar out, rotated it, and reinstalled it, and then the torsion bolts were about equal. It's possible you have this problem, and instead of taking the time to fix it properly, they just cranked down on the adjuster.

Jeff, that was Gerald Jarrett that had to do that to his truck. He explains how he did it and the reasons for it in his registry thread...second post. Plenty of good info there.

This is an awesome group here. I have spent quite a few fun hours reading and I can't get enough! Every thread has something new, useful and sometimes laugh out loud funny.
Most excellent info. It seems the left rear sag is fairly common and I can live with the fix and even check to see if the bar is installed one notch off.
Thanks for the replies to my first post and the welcome.
