View Full Version : "A4LD X's when did your tranny go?
ChuckyD 12-07-2001, 03:50 PM I understand that the Tranny on our trucks suck.. im just curious when they went out on your trucks and if you drove your truck hard or not. I drive it hard (got a heavy foot) I do try to refraim from downshifting too often though. I just want to know what to expect.
B94Sport 12-07-2001, 04:01 PM How about an "It hasn't gone yet" option also? I have a '94 with the auto tranny, it has 111,000 miles on it and still shifts perfectly. I have had no problems with it (Knock on wood). I do a full fluid swap every 10,000 miles and keep Trans-X in it.
B94Sport 12-07-2001, 04:09 PM :o Oops... This is what I get for coming to the board during the day, when I am supposed to be working!
ChuckyD 12-07-2001, 04:10 PM Im at work too :D
CougarX 12-07-2001, 04:16 PM Mine went at 114k the first time then about 11 more times up until 157k when I got tired of taking it in for warranty and listening to the tranny shops BS about why they couldn't fix it. If it wasn't for that damn tranny I'd still have the 92. Oh well. Life goes on.
BislamJoe 12-07-2001, 04:25 PM Mine's not dead yet! I've only got ~85k on it though, and I feel it coming... Hopefully I'll manage to toss in the 4.9 I6 and AOD before it dies...
Michigander 12-07-2001, 04:42 PM the topic is 91-94 X's, but I think that the 95-97 4.0L use the exact same tranny... mine was around 75K
expo5.0 12-07-2001, 04:49 PM our 91 eddie lasted to 135,000 perfectly until it was sold. and that was with a ton of towing miles, towing a 25 foot arriva speed boat with a awesome built 540ci in it. the tranny was never serviced other than at 60,000 mile intervals as well.
offroadkc 12-07-2001, 04:55 PM What...no pre 60k. That's a little optimistic isn't it?
Mike 92 XLT 12-08-2001, 08:52 PM Mine blew up at 95K in South Central LA. That was fun.
peace

Maniak 12-12-2001, 08:19 PM Our first went at 165k miles.. our 2nd went at 235k miles.. but we had to overheat the motor really bad to break the 2nd one.. actually melted some hard parts at the front of the tranny..

ChuckyD 12-13-2001, 08:47 PM LOL took me to become a moderator to fix my own poll...lol

Almost right. The only difference is that the 4R55E is fully electronically controlled and was only used on 95-96's. Still a piece of crap though.:)
Expoprep 12-21-2001, 04:54 PM You are definatly too optimistic, my trany dropped at just under 40k. Yes this is true, but I don't put things like that past the wonderful people at Ford. They claim to build things Ford Tough and then they use the words "quality" and the name "Ford" in one sentence which really makes me angry, because there cars are far from quality. I believe I am the only Explorer owner and hater on this site.
ChuckyD 12-22-2001, 12:11 AM Well they do use quality, But everyone knows they arent talking about their tranny's...lol
jimbo74 01-14-2002, 11:58 PM 104k and still going... aite bye
dieselrocks 01-25-2002, 01:00 PM On my '92 it went at 75K. Never pulled a trailer or any abusive driving. Trans shop that rebuilt it said it was very common for this trans. After complete rebuild, it went again at 140K. See a pattern here?
X-Dawg 01-25-2002, 02:22 PM okay, Im at 113,000 with not a hint of probs.. I am the third owner of this 94 my Dad had it before I did for a short time.. most of the milage is freeway, original owner made frequent trips to Baja, though apparently not to get dirty.. I am the first to go wheeling with it.. and of course the auto hubs dont work.. sigh.
Oh, about the tranny, good service, easy driving, now I have it.. Im worried..hehe..
I realize a tranny cooler, frequent service and quality fluids help, but besides replacing the tranny with an alternate setup, is there any kit or rebuild or aftermarket anything that will keep this from going so often? I see so many posts about the weak nature of this unit and wonder why there is not better way of takin care of the problem..
Oh wow.. long post sorry..
Ill sit down.. :)
VairKing 02-15-2002, 11:56 PM I bought my X in April, with 135K on it, now has about 153K, it wouldn't shift into overdrive when I bought it, not sure whats wrong with it but other than that it shifts okay.
93'XLT 4X4 02-20-2002, 10:13 PM VairKing:
You may want to do a search under vacuum modulator.
That may be why your trans won't shift into overdrive.
Elder Elemental Evil 02-21-2002, 06:21 PM 205k, and still ticking.
COBRA 03-25-2002, 04:38 PM I bought my '91 X(actually I straight traded for my '81 CJ7) just two months ago. As far as I know, I'm it's 3rd owner. The first owner (Rober Urich) had it 'till about 70K miles, it's second owner had the tranny go out right after buying it. I got it with 134K & the tranny was pretty jacked. Cold it would work very sluggishly through all gears. Once it wamed up, it wouldn't go past 2nd. The previous owner had parked it because he didn't want to drop the $ on rebuilding it again. I asked if he'd tried servicing it & got the usuall "it's a crappy trans. that just dies every 70K or less, you're gonna have to rebuild it. He towed it to my house and we made the trade. "I changed the fluid & filter and it got quite a bit better, but not perfect. I then disconnected the cooler hoses & proceded to run/drain & refill another 6or7 quarts of fluid, magic cure! 2k miles later it's still working well. I plan to re-service it soon & add an in-line filter to hopfully keep it alive. The fluid in it was so bad that it's still dark after all the fluid I've put through it. I'm sure the lack of service cut it's life some, but for now it's running!
flyguy 04-08-2002, 02:01 AM Mine bit the big one suddenly at 80K. No problems till just one day... kablooie.

COBRA 04-09-2002, 04:06 PM Guess I spoke too soon. I thought I'd saved my tranny, but one day I noticed that the torque converter clutch was no longer working. No biggie I thought, just a little loss of gas mileage aint worth a rebuild. Then one day I towed my buddy's boat for him (aprox. 4500lbs.). We had some pretty steep, long hills to clime & like a dumb*&# I put my foot to the floor to show how well the X pulls a load. A few minutes into it I notice a James Bond style smoke screen comming from under the truck, so I ease up on it. When I got home I went straight to the trans. dipstick where I found my just serviced fluid burnt as hell. The trans. was still working well so I thought I'd just change it again. The next morning I jump in to go get some trans. fluid & no upshift! After manually engaging 2nd & getting it up to 45 or so I put it back in D then it went back to norm. I've been driving it that way a couple weeks now. Every time it sits an hour or so, it won't up-shift till I force it, & occasionally sticks in 2nd when I come to a stop untill it warms up. I went ahead & seviced it hoping it would help, NOPE. I'd been considering selling it, now I may have my decider.
DarkFox1 09-05-2002, 03:49 PM I can't vote on this.. I had 1 tranny go out at 45k and my 2nd one is now got 1 foot in the grave and I'm at 67k.... ford transmissions suck.. HORRIBLE for reliability.
plus I have a 4R70W so I dont count.. but I'll give my inpiut anyway, cos....... I dunno..
bowuff 09-27-2002, 09:35 PM 2 explorers, 2 rebuilds. 2 tired of this.
espnfreak 11-05-2002, 05:45 PM My 1996 just went dead at 89k, im not sure it was cuz of the water in the tranny that made it die, but the tech said it had tons of shavings, and the entire thing was shot, and theres no way to rebuild it, just throw a new one in there. So i got the warranty, and i should be getting another transmission installed soon.
Nate1 12-14-2002, 02:20 AM Wondering how the 4x4 '99 4L SOHC (4.10 gears weee!!!) trannies are. They are the 5R55E right? Any input on them is awsome.
jgilbs 01-01-2003, 05:31 PM my car has 133k miles on it. about a month ago, no problems, then all of a sudden, i let my foot off of the brake at a stop sign, gunned it and VROOM!! the tach shot up to 5k but the car sat there and did nothing. im rebuilding it myself in a week
JWood 01-02-2003, 07:48 PM 1st rebuild at 87K...2nd rebuild at 137k...now have 168k and it has a slight 1st gear slip occasionally. So, what have I done...well I bought a 2002 XLS and am really happy with it!
SaleenEXP 01-02-2003, 10:09 PM 110,000 on my sisters 94', was mine, driven very hard and still on the orginal trans with no slipping at all. Another friend has about 160,000 miles on his 94' with no slipping on the original trans and he does some offroading in Maine where he lives and drove down here for school. knock on wood lol!
dgibson 01-10-2003, 01:31 PM First time was @ 110k, and again about 18 months after that at @ 120k. Having probs again, but it is still under warranty now.
MagicMan 01-10-2003, 02:24 PM mine seemed to start slipping around 170k and then stopped. just now started to stick in first gear unless i ease off and then it will shift. probably lost 2nd gear from what i can tell but i havent gone to a tranny shop yet. I'm expecting to need the "R" word sometime soon.
dgibson 01-22-2003, 04:12 PM Mine usually sticks in the morning unless I let the x warm up for about 10 minutes
I didnt see the option for "I own a 5spd i dont have to worry about ford's crap transmissions" :D
boostranger 01-22-2003, 11:19 PM 156,000 and still goin strong
MichaelM 01-25-2003, 12:18 AM 92 Xlt. Transmission slipped in reverse gear at 140K. Rebuilt and is still going strong at 250K.
jon42 01-25-2003, 07:33 AM I am possibly the 3rd owner of a 91 ranger with the a4ld. It tossed its front seal at 125K and puked all 11 quarts out christmas morning 20 miles from my brothers house (an 45 from mine).Good hitching on christmas bye the way.My rebuild (yeah....me...i rebuilt it) lasted 150 mile....thats..."one hundred and fifty miles".Tommorow i take it out again and see what went wrong. It slips in all ranges.Moves when its cold but slips to the point of immobility when warm. Anyone got a clue as to what went wrong...feel free to email me at ....jlieurance@hotmail.com
csxtrainman 02-15-2003, 11:11 AM Mine just ate the overdrive clutch's at 71,000. Very low mileage for a 91 X. Im only the second owner and this truck has sat so much in its life. So now im gonna rebuild it myself:eek:...fun for me!
Jon42
I think your problem is the seals in the pistons. Inside of each drum there is a piston that activates the clutches. If that seal is not in PERFECT condition it will cause it to slip in every gear especially when it is warm. I just finished rebuilding my trans and missed one of those seals and it cost me another rebuild kit and ALOT of frustration  Good luck!
jon42 02-15-2003, 04:00 PM Hmm...ive torn down the trans and found the no.2 bearing between the planet and sprag completely annihilated.found rollers in the sprag clutch possibly inhibiting its grabbing capability.I replaced the piston seals in my rebuild but didnt inspect them as i stopped analizing when i discovered the disintergrated bearing.Think i will explore further.Have new planet comming from texas and centershaft from alabama.Found its cheaper to shop for these parts nationwide .The planet was $93 at one outfit and $50 at another.Would think that a wrecking yard would sell a guy a scrap a4ld to scrounge parts from but ,all i found was 1 core for $250.Since a4ld,s bugger the planets often this didnt seem like a good bet.A trans place called makco and one called S&K transparts were the most reasonably priced. Still wonder tho what caused the bearing failure.Didnt change the thrust washers so i dont believe it was ecssesive thrust....hmmm.
ekesz13 01-06-2004, 06:27 PM 182K and still going....
Stic-o 01-06-2004, 06:49 PM 5R55E....113k:( and $2650!
yosh18981898 01-25-2004, 11:16 PM Moral of this story: don't get an ex with an auto tranny!!!!!! The manual version is funner and better anyways!!!!
SoBeLover 01-29-2004, 10:26 PM 110,780 miles and still kicking a@@
dgibson 02-18-2004, 04:10 PM must be nice
Albino 94LTD 02-27-2004, 11:06 PM 124,000 and still going. seems to get hot when I tow the boat.
97LTD 05-16-2004, 07:29 PM 1993 LTD 2WD tranny still orignal at 212K highway miles, I drive easy and it still shift smoothly. I serviced my tranny a couple times and the tranny never strand me yet.
mrboyle 06-05-2004, 10:22 PM Mine finally went at 202,200 miles.

Well, since I posted that my tranny has given me a few problems, it still runs well but when it gets overheated it spits tranny fluid out the vent pipe. Someone where I work is going to look at it and see what's wrong but it looks like time for a replacement :(
boostranger 06-06-2004, 11:04 PM 182,??? still no probs... but this supercharger may change that:)
