Ok all. I am new to 4x4's. have always liked explores, most any year. Money not being a problem, what good used year Explorer do you think would be good to get? Great site by the way, glad I found it.

I think it really depends on what exactly you want to do.

91-94 were very similar, offered the OHV V6. Their are not as many Aftermarket parts as for the 95+ models it seems. I have a 91 and I am very happy with it.

I belive in 95 Ford introduced the 5.0L V8 (302) into the line up. Could have been later not sure. They also offered the SOHC version of the V6 which had more power.

I know that probably does not help much, hehe, but its about all I can tell you.

97 was the first year that at SOHC was available.

I say go with as new as an explorer as possible. Reason being, the newer the vehicle you get, it reduces the risk of haveing problems. Ide say a 98 sport or newer. Why? The back hatch and tail lites are a little cleaner.
And more importanty, I like seeing girls hop out of sports :D
Thats just my opinion though. :D

if money isnt a problem, why not just get a new one?

Typically, try not to get a vehicle the from a year it was introduced, or a change in the design. It usually takes a year for Ford to get most of the bugs worked out.
In the Explorers case, 1991 was the first year and is problematic in small areas that was fixed by '92.

The next year for change was 1995, which was when the most changes took place, so not very good.

Starting in 1996, the V8 was avalable in all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, which was peviosly only avalable in 2wd.

Also, if you like Limited Explorers, they were introduced for the 1994 year.

Rick(creator of the board), says to go with 91-94, but the 94 is the best because by then all the bugs they were going to work out were done. There are more aftermarket parts available for those years. Also the suspension has more possibilities for modifications. 95+ you can do a torsion bar twist with Warrior shackles in the rear for lift, but they have come out with some lift kits finally. However, $$$$$$! These lift also don't offer anymore travel. There is a very limited amount of things to be done with these years as far as getting wheel travel. They are capable though.

91-94s are better if you ask me.... You have a lot of lift kits and aftermarket parts to make the 91-94 the best off road. Not to mention you can get a front locker.
