View Full Version : Oil very thin, almost watery?

I have an 92 X with 158,000 miles. I recently changed the oil and put 10W-30W Mobil1 Synthetic in there. Put five quarts through and dipstick shows oil above the checkered full line(normal?). I just checked it again (a few days later) after a moderate drive and when I pulled the dipstick out, the oil dripped off the stick and when I looked I saw very small bubbles on the upper end of the stick. Could a few drops of water in the oil cause this? I added some oil (before the change) the other day and it was raining pretty hard.

Could this mean that the oil level is too high, causing it to foam?

If not, does this sound normal?

:nono: I will change the oil ASAP if I were you to make sure.

Smell the oil. Does it smell at all like antifreeze? It sounds to me like your head gaskets are bad or even worse, your heads are cracked.

Well, before I changed the oil a few days ago it did not look like this at all and it wasn't way above the checkered full area on the dipstick. The oil was in perfect condition other than it needed to be changed.

The more I read the more I am suspecting I overfilled it, causing it to foam. Not sure but I think 10W Synthetic is pretty thin in general, right?

Can I just remove a quart somehow, or would it just be better to change it again?

The Mobil1 synthetic oil does feel thiner.

How much oil did you add the time before this change?

Good luck....

Well this is the first oil change I have done on this car. It's actually my GF's car and previous oil changes were done at a local oil change shop. I figured I'd do it myself to make sure everything is going smooth since this motor has high mileage.

Did you change the filter also? if you didnt and added 5 qts your going to be overfull. How far overfull are you showing? a little over the line isnt going to be a big deal on the 4.0.

I would check the oil again on a level surface after it has had a chance to drain into the pan. see what it looks like then. A couple of rain drops in the oil filler shouldnt be a big deal- once the oil gets up to operating temp the water should boil off.

I run Mobil 1 and I think it looks thinner than other oils- thats fine , thats why I got it!.

If you need to remove a quart just pull the filter and replace it with a new one, it holds a bit less than a quart., and there will be a couple of ozs in the adapter that will come out, but its a way to get almost a quart out without draining the pan.

I changed the filter. It's just odd that 5 quarts would show it half an inch over the full mark. Unless there is a problem with the oil draining back down before I changed it.

Is it showing over full now???? If you changed the filter and oil, added five qts, and DID NOT start it before you checked it, it would show OVER. All engines develope some water in them, it is simple condensation from the engine being hot and the air flowing through it being cold.
Check it again, keep an eye on it for a day or 2..If it shows over full, drain some off..Don't worry about the bubbles on the stick, if you are getting water in the oil, it will look MILKY..
If it seems too thin, smell of it..The only way to thin oil is to add gas to it..If your rig is running fine, the chances of getting gas in the oil are next to none.
Good Luck

Check the oil level first thing in the morning after the vehicle has had a chance to sit overnight. Most synthetics will take a lot longer to drain back into the pan because they cling better to moving parts.
