Im thinking of putting some 31x10.5 r15s on my 96 explorer sport with no lift (yet). I was wondering if any one has put 31s on such a vehicle and whether or not they had and trouble with clearance or rubbing. Im also wondering if there would be any issues with the gear ratio with tires that size... i cant imagine there would be.

You'll be fine. They'll fit and whatever gearing you have will be good enough.
Im not sure about gearing id have to check, but does any one have recommendations on some decent tires for less than 125 dollars?

I'm sure you must mean less than $125 each.
My BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO 31x10.50's cost around $112 each.
lol yeah thats what i meant. I was thinking of those too... do they wear well on the road?
I've got 31" BFGs on mine and they're great. I do have a 2" TT/War lift though. If you have 4x4, they'll probably fit but might rub at full flex and/or turning. Mine is 2wd, so it probably sat a little lower than yours stock.
My stock gears were 3.27 and the only reason I was able to put up with them was with the torque from the supercharger. I upgraded to 3.73s. However, if you have a stick tranny, it'll be easier to deal with.

I have 3.55's and they are sufficient enough to turn the 31's. I can remember reading that some people on this board even run 31's with 3.27's.
The BFG's wear quite well on the road. I've had mine for about 10,000+ miles and they still look brand new. The little nobby things are even still on there.
Id go check to see what gear ratio i have right now but i worked 2 shifts and im dead tired.

I hate my 3.55's with my 31's. I have a stick though, so the loss in poewr and torque is more noticeable.
