I have a 99 Explorer Sport with the V6. What type of oil does Ford recommend and how many qaurts? Does anyone know where I can get a manual for this truck? It did not come with one when I bought it. Thanks.

Answers to all your questions.
www.helminc.com sells the manuals or you can get them online at www.ownerconnection.com

The following are for the SOHC (not sure if it is the same for the OHV)
It asks for 5w-30 but many use things like 10-w30
It takes 5 quarts
Also avoid Fram and Pennzoil filters

For better mileage and performance, consider changing over to synthetic oil.

Good luck....

What's wrong with Fram?

Quoting from the site, http://www.frankhunt.com/FRANK/corvette/articles/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html

Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. It features cardboard endcaps for the filter element that are glued in place. The rubber anti-drainback valve seals against the cardboard and frequently leaks, causing dirty oil to drain backinto the pan. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak all the time. The stamped-metal threaded end isweakly constructed and it has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow. I had one of these filters fail in my previous car. The filter element collapsedand bits of filter and glue were circuilating through my system. The oil passge to the head became blocked and the head got so hot from oil starvation that it actuallymelted the vacuum lines connected to it as well as the wires near it.

How can I tell if it is SOHC or OHC?

I guess Fram decided to downgrade their product to make up for the cost of the new SureGrip top :D :D :D

To see if you have an SOHC you can look under your hood. The SOHCs have a plactic cover that says 4.0 SOHC. Also you can look at the 8th digit of your vin if it is an "E" it has the SOHC. If it is an "X" it has the OHV. If it has a "P" it has the 5.0L V8

Which is considered better, the SOHC or the OHV?

The SOHC has 45-50 more horsepower depending on the year. It didn't come out until the 1997 model year so that would exclude your '95. You have the OHV.

The OHV has more history and more parts available. The SOHC is a potentially much better motor, but lacking in parts now

Does anyone know how much oil a OHV holds?

I assume that is with a oil filter change. Does Ford recommend 10w-30? Thanks

Yes, 5 quarts includes the filter, and no Ford doesn't recommend 10W30 anymore. Up until vert recently, they only recommend 5W30 per a TSB they issued that applied to all 1997 Ford vehicles.

Does that mean all 94s are OHV too?

Yup! Ford introduced the SOHC in '97. Since mine is a '96, I have the OHV too.

Alright, cool. Thanks. I've been wondering about that
