View Full Version : Imagine Win2k with a problem!!
JoshC 12-17-2001, 09:12 PM :D Anyway, i built a computer last year, it's got a AMD 1G thunderbird and it installed win2k pro and all was good. The case and floppy and CD were old, but worked great. Well, i bought a Phillips CD Burner and installed it, worked great for a couple of weeks and then, i noticed that neither one of them were showing up under my computer. Well, i'm studying to get my MCSE in school right now, so i'm in with the "computer geeks" (no harm i hope because i'm one too) and no one can help me. I've uninstalled, i've slowed my processor down thinking i fried my IDE port, i've changed ports, cables, jumpers, and everything else. Neither one will show up. I can unplug and plug it back up and windows will recognize it and install it and ask me to restart, so i do and when it boots back up i'm back in the same boat. I've tried to fix the registery cause that's the code it's giving me, but that's like walking through fire. So the only thing we could come up with is that my OS is hosed, so i think we are going to back up my HD on my bros computer through the network and the do the ol' format C: number. Any other guesses?? Thanks!!
Happy computing!
ChuckyD 12-17-2001, 09:15 PM You said you swapped the IDE's?
Put the HD in secondary and cd in primary?
JoshC 12-17-2001, 09:23 PM Nope, don't work, i think i'll just put it under my front wheel of my Explorer and drive over it and take a picture of the little bit of flex in the rear, what do you think!! haha. Seriously, i've tried all that crap and nothing seems to work, i don't know what caused it or why it won't work, but man, it's annoying!! I would think that by installing a new copy of 2k and starting fresh would make it all better. I know the cd players work because we tried them in another computer, so  ! hehe!!
Happy computing!
ChuckyD 12-17-2001, 09:26 PM Did the PC boot when you swapped the IDE's.
Do a format... nothing beats a format. Do you have WinXP?
rpenner54 12-17-2001, 09:46 PM Go to www.roxio.com and see what they have to say about cd-burners. They are somewhat touchy. :D If you don't have the newest and greatest software to even write to them it can blow up on you. I run dual boot Win98/W2k just to get by this problem.
However it sounds like a slight hardware issue, here is a thought, a trickyone at that, swap motherboards. See what happens if you try that and then boot. Although your going to get all those dumbass drivers re-loading but if you do that and are able to repeat the problem it sounds like software, if not hardware... More specifically the motherboard. OR try moving that burner over to another system and see if you get the same results.
JoshC 12-18-2001, 08:46 AM Ryan, we did try to put the burner on another system and it worked fine, so i know that rules out a possible junker. I did go to that site a few weeks ago and read some stuff, but i didn't find anything helpful.
Chuck, no it didn't boot because win2k supposubly can only use one channel to boot from because of the settings or something like that, and it has to be the primary. That's what my professor told me.
I do have access to XP but i'm in school working on getting my MCSE (microsoft certified systems engineer) and we are using 2k so i have it at the house so i can do my labs and stuff. My brother has it on his computer on the network and it froze up and he about lost everything, lucky had stuff on different drives. I know it sounds like i'm just shooting your alls ideas down, but i think we've tried everything! Well, looks like backing up my hard drive and formatting might be the way to go!!
Happy computing!
Campo 12-18-2001, 09:40 AM What is your hardware config? do you have one or 2 HD's on IDE0 are both CD and CDR on IDE1
I had a similar prob with a Plextor CDRW and I had to
1. flash the BIOS
2. set the CDRW as primary on IDE1
3. set the CD as secondary on IDE1
4. and HD's left on IDE0 primary/slave...
I think the key to ir working was flashing the BIOS it was and Award BIOS from Jun 01 and I flashed it Sep 01
and It works great now...
JoshC 12-18-2001, 02:51 PM Tony, now there's something we never thought of. I have the config you have and i only have one HD on 0 and the cdr as primary and cd as secondary. I might try that. How do you flash the bios?? You'll have to give me some good detail cause i'm not the best at this hardware stuff!! Thanks!

Campo 12-18-2001, 06:32 PM Go to http://www.wimsbios.com/ it has the links and directions to different BIOS's, MOBO Manufacturer's and Sys Manufacturer's, The way flashing a BIOS works is a little different for each BIOS and MOBO, but basiclly it requires you to get a flash proggie (flasher) and the ROM file (BIOS Upgrade) then put it on a boot disk,
then reboot using the disk and run the flasher it will ask you if you wanna back up you current ROM "ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR CURRENT ROM (BIOS)" then it'll ask you where the ROM you want to use is...let it flash and it will tell you to reboot... remove the disk and your done...
now some are different then other's, even the same BIOS will have different flashers ie. and Award BIOS from a DELL is different then an Award BIOS from Amptron MOBO manufacturer.. so make sure you have the correct one for the sys and MOBO.. just do allot of reasearch before doing it... once you get the right MOBO, revision number and BIOS version, it's pretty easy to do...
JoshC 12-18-2001, 07:24 PM Sweet, thanks alot. I'll have to talk to my buddy and see if we can get that taken care of one evening. I'll let you know how things turn out!!
Happy computing!
