hey guys since we are moving my mom decided to cancel the cable internet service.....and go back to the "slow internet" aka dialup....so we have to return our cable modem and stuff to our local cable company

heres the thing..i can buy cable modems off the internet to own..

heres my question.
If i buy a cable modem of the internet...and install it in my computer...WITHOUT subscribing with the cable company....Will i get the internet to work?

basically if i buy the cable modem off the net, will i get buy paying monthly payements to someone?

help asap!!

thanks

Yes you will still have to pay... the cable company has to register the modem and open the line for you.

You can get the modem but you'll still have to pay for the service... just like old dial up.. you can buy the modem but have to pay for service to connect...

[EDIT] what ChuckyD said.... he beat me to it...:D

these guys are right, you still gotta pay, but you have to pay less than normally - its a reduced rate since you wont be renting your modem from them. heres the thing, when something happens to the rented modem, they replace it for free; when something happens to your own modem, youre screwed.

That also depends how you get your service... i payed for the modem upfront and they gave me software, wires and other stuff. If i cancel the modem is mine... but if something is wrong with it they will replace it.

No, you won't have acess to the internet. That's just like having a dial-up modem without an ISP.

I guess buying the modem is a bargain if you are planning to keep the connection for a long time. I'm paying about $10 for the cable modem retal every month.

Just keep in mind that not all cable modems and carriers are compatible ;)

no you will not be able to gain access to the net by plugging in a cable modem. each cable modem has a MAC address and the cable company has to enable that mac address on their network in order for it to get access. there have been people who have gotten in and added there own but those people are hackers and know their stuff.

Do you have a next door neighbor you can split it with?

It is more logical to purchase the modem ... because it pays for itself after about a year or so. If you add up the extra fee.
