Here is a pic of a good flex plate on the left and the grenaded one on the right. The smaller circular piece by the bad flexplate is the center section of said flex plate. OUCHHH!!!

Hey Kevin,
Is that something I should be worried about?
Do you know why this happened?
I don't want this happening to me on my way to or from Moab.

The flexplate takes place of the flywheel on automatic transmissions and connects the torque converter to the engine. I would not be to worried about this breaking on a regular basis. Most trannies unlock the torque converter before downshifting (freeway speeds) and my kickdown linkage was adjusted to tight and causing the tranny to shift (mechanical connection) before the torque converter unlocked (electronically controlled by vehicle speed and throttle sensor) causing a very rough shift and thud when it down shifted. Over time and also towing a 3000 lb boat a trailer loaded with about 1000 lbs of crap from California to Washington added to the problem, possibly causing a crack in the plate. Even more time after that may have increased the size of the crack eventually causing it to finally give away.

I am still waiting on the torque converter to arrive. Should be here some time next week, the only problem is I won't. The ship is going through the training cycle now so we are usually gone during the week and only in port on the weekends and I am on my weekend cycle for duty, therefore I only have one or two days in the next month to work on it. Slowly but surely.

flywheel = manual transmission
flexplate = automatic transmission

in the most basic sense they perform the same function.

Kevin I am convinced that your late unlocking converter caused this damage.

I agree. I am going to readjust the kick down linkage so that the torque converter will unlock before downshifting. I should have the parts by the 13th of this month and installed this weekend.

Kevin,
Is that the 91 4.0 flexplate?

The broken one is the one out of my 93. The good one next to it is the one from the 91 for comparrison.
