Has anyone ever taken apart their steering column before? How tougb was it to do? I have an annoying squeak that I want to fix.

Are you sure the noise is in the column? I had a VERY annoying noise when turning the wheel that sounded like it was in the column when sitting in the driver's seat. I got down at the floorboard and turned the wheel and it turned out to be the rubber boot where the shaft meets the firewall. A little synthetic (make sure whatever you use does not contain petroleum distillates, which eats rubber) lubricant solved the problem.

John,

I'm fairly sure this gremlin is in the wheel but I will check by the firewall. It's a really funny noise, it's a tiny squeak at idle, but when turning it sounds like aluminum foil being twisted.

Found one of the culprits. The main support for the steering column had on the left side had come totally loose causing it to squeak. I have another rattle that I am still trying to figure where it's coming from in there. Somewhere on top near the key cylinder.
