View Full Version : R/C Off-Road..
93Ranger 02-19-2002, 12:28 AM ok, within the next few weeks, i will be buying my Traxxas T-Maxx Radio Controled Car.
most of you have heard my ideas about this, and im planning on nixing some of that due to monetary conditions (im cheap and dont have the money now)
but, if everyone would like, i can keep you updated on my progress and keep up pics if you'd like. it'll be a fun project and it will keep me busy and outta trouble.
so far my definate ideas?
1- T-Maxx
2- Ford Excursion/Ford F-150 quad body, painted Ford Factory blue, candy apple red flames on the hood and wheel wells (most likely tribals, but undecided yet). antenna will be inside body so the car looks semi real.
3- i have several sets of wheels and tires picked out.
engine wise, im going to hold off on the big engine conversion until i get some feed back on running 2 big engines, it'll be difficult to setup, but once it is, im looking at 60+ MPH
im also planning on making some new fender walls like those on Fab-Tech's F-150 quad (theirs are alum. mine will be lexan).
so if you guys want me to keep you updated, then just let me know and i'll make it a weekly or so post in this forum (unless i get cleared to put it in general *wink wink*)
Heath 02-19-2002, 08:19 PM Please keep me updated... What do those things cost anyway, just for the starter kit... I know thy're supposed to be pretty bad right out of the box....
93Ranger 02-19-2002, 08:46 PM woo, im convertin people. T-Maxx = 430 or so, ready to run, pull it out of the box, minor assembly and checking everything and toss some gas in it start it up, and your off, stock top speed? 31 MPh or so.
you can get other kits in the 200 to 250 range, but they wont be nearly as durable or fun to drive, it all depends on whether you want to do off-road or on-road, gas or electric, scale, weight weenie or bigger is better, lots of factors go into your purchase.
i am choosing the T-maxx simply because of the massive aftermarket and it is a great platform for a project truck, something to constantly wrench on.
SCEXPLORER 02-19-2002, 08:51 PM Hey! I was just looking into building my own R/C Do they have explorer bodies out there? Also, where can i look at to get info on offroad trucks?
Stephen S 02-19-2002, 11:58 PM I'd like to be kept updated Phil. Hopefully, I won't be far behind you with my purchase. ;)
expo5.0 02-20-2002, 12:07 AM i have the same truck. and a crappy explorer r/c car body. ooh when i get home i may have my work cut out for me. don't have a pic of the traxxxas but heres the x
ChuckyD 02-20-2002, 12:11 AM Heres what mine kinda looks like... mine is all yellow, everything else is the same though.
espnfreak 02-20-2002, 12:12 AM I got a Traxxas Rustler and a HPI RS4 with the 2 speed clutch and tuned pipe, and a few other mods, that thing cruises at around 50+ MPH! The rustler is a capable offroad truck, but nothing compared to that whoppin T-MAXX
93Ranger 02-21-2002, 09:07 PM steve and I have been thinking about getting some Explorer Sport trac bodies made by Bolink
http://www.bolink.com/bodies3.html#tmaxx
bottom center.
i thought the bolink body would suck because of bolink's reputation of having bodies that fit poorly/look cheap.
i just hope that body is not pre-painted, ive got a killer idea for painting it wedgewood blue with carbon fiber flames on it. yes, i will paint the carbon fiber body my self.
it'll be cool. the body will be about 20 bucks. im going to make some money for the truck by painting bodies and selling them on E-bay, they run for about 80 bucks plus for a good looking body. wee!
Lifted95X 02-22-2002, 01:52 PM I got an rc10gt, with the Novarossi motor...tops out at about 46MPH.... with the explorer body painted the exact automotive paint color as my X. I will try to take a pic today, and post tomorrow.
SCEXPLORER 02-22-2002, 02:01 PM Where i can i get an explorer body cus my local hobby shop doesn't have it?
Lifted95X 02-22-2002, 02:29 PM This place (http://www.pdhobbyshop.com/shop/home.php) is right by my house....the should have them, or be able to order them there.
Lifted95X 02-23-2002, 07:09 AM Welf first...here is my X.
Lifted95X 02-23-2002, 07:10 AM Here is the front of my RC.
Lifted95X 02-23-2002, 07:10 AM and the back.
Lifted95X 02-23-2002, 07:11 AM and of course...the powerplant.
SSIKORA - That is friggin awesome. Where did you find the body?
I too have been contemplating buying a R/C (car or truck) and putting an X body on it, but i cannot find one. I have been out of it for a while but are the car motors the same as the aviation motors? (I have tons or R/C aviation crap). I also thought I might go electric, less crap to mess with and I have an inverter in my X that I can use to charge up with.
But, yes, keep me posted
Lifted95X 02-23-2002, 08:55 AM The motor's are different. I posted up above where you can probably order a body from..I go there quite often. If not from there...let me know...I know one other place for sure that has them.
jimbo74 02-23-2002, 10:16 AM dahms, proline, bolink or parma are the major body people..... the bodys range from $15-40 unless you get a custom painted one.....
i have a traxxas t-maxx...... taking out the spool later today..reworking the suspension too for LESS travel... it has too much and broke a 25 dollar axle.... lots of mods..... will post digi pic later when i get it going and a parts list
93Ranger 02-23-2002, 10:50 AM nice one SSIKORA
i got a honda S2k body the other day for 4 bucks because the wheel well was cracked (part that trim away, so whatever) im gonna practice painting on it, if it turns out good, im selling it on the Bay
my idea? one of 2
either black body with red/light red carbon fiber flames
or a red body with black and graphite carbon fiber flames
which would look better?
Perry 02-23-2002, 12:02 PM This Patrick's truck in Moab. Some of those hills were a little to much for this truck.
Heath 02-28-2002, 09:17 PM Well my wife just bought me a new T-Maxx yesterday... I don't have any plans for it except to drive the piss out of it... When I start breaking things I'll replace them with better parts. But until then I want to learn how to drive this bad boy stock first...
Its pretty quick out of the box... Not much low end, low speed torque, but I may be able to fix that with some adjusting that I'm not brave enough to do yet...
I've been through 4 tanks of nitro so far, I admit I started getting on it toward the end of the last tank... I'm pretty sure I've got the engine broken in, now I just have to figure out how to tune it for the best performance... I'm new to gas RC cars but you have to learn sometime...
Anyway anyone considering the T-Maxx I say get it... It kicks some serious butt...
To bad its dark outside I want to drive my truck some more...
93Ranger 03-04-2002, 12:17 AM UPDATE!!!!!
ok, if anyone wants a Explorer Body, my LHS has them, i would be happy to buy them and send them to you, alls you gotta do is pay for the body and shipping.
the LHS also has the Sport Trac bodies if anyone is intrested, they are pretty trick looking, great by Bolink's standards. they are clear so you need to paint them.
the S2k body got dropped and stepped on :( so its demolished. but im going to buy a BMW M5 body to play around with.
im slacking in the buying of the car department because ive been pre-occupied looking for a new car (real one) and i just blew 170 on a Benchmade Osborne 940 knife.
so... when i get the truck (if i get that, im considering one other model) i'll begin a saga post where everyone can check my progress and post ideas that they would like me to try. also post opinions on my proposed ideas. what do you think?
Peas everyone!!
PunkChild 03-04-2002, 07:38 PM Tower Hobbies has just about every body you could ever want. It's good to see that there are other people interested in R/C's on this board. I have a T-MAXX with a lot of the traxxas and MIP accesories, a tricked out RC10GT, and a electric 4-tec.
93Ranger 03-06-2002, 03:57 PM www.towerhobbies.com
thats the link for whut PunkChild was refering to.
Punk: have you driven a nitro 4tec? those things haul man. but i want the Shumacker Fusion (i think thats the model). under 400 bucks, out of the box it'll run 85 MPH. can we say Tercel beater?
PunkChild 03-06-2002, 08:14 PM No, I have the electric model but it goes 40 easy. I had the three speed transmission for my T-MAXX a while ago that made it go 60. It's a little to scary to have a off-road truck going 60, you can't turn worth a crap.
Trapper14 03-06-2002, 09:20 PM I REALLY used to be into r/c's hardcore, but they are SO expensive! I at one time had a
Stampede: 2wd
Coldbuster: 4x4 BIG tires
Wild Dagger: 4x4 durable
Tao3r: on road car
I love my stampede (which is slightly modded and ZOOMS!)
I got rid of my wild dagger for money purposes( explorer needed a kkm :)
I have some REALLY good mudding pics of my rc in action in mud.... post em later.
93Ranger 03-06-2002, 10:18 PM yea punk, no lie on the having no steering on a truck goin anywhere above 45.
the nitro 4tec is HELLA fast, and handles pretty nicely at speed.
Trapper, the daggar was probabally better to get rid of, they are getting kinda beat looks and performance wise, it was better to keep the pede. the clod is like the original monster truck (okok the USA-1 is, but the clod is still a monster) and they perform pretty well i suppose, i havent had the option to drive one. look cool though :)
