I sometimes have a rattling sound coming from my engine when i accelerate hard. What it does is get up in rpms then before it shifts it makes a rattling noise for about 1 or 2 seconds then it shifts. Anyone have a suggestion to fix this and is this sound what is known as knocking? What exactly is happening when i hear the sound? My dads 96 bronco with the 351 does it sometimes but its under regular acceleration and lasts alot longer. Are there any parts that i can replace to help prevent this. When i get the money i am going to replace to cam and put on some roller rockers in 1.6. from what i have heard those are the size to use. Thanks, Major

thats called pinging/detonation.

Try a better grade gas.

Try to clean your MAF. That will probably help.

I have the same sound in mine. Premium gas helps some but it still pings. I have heard that there is a computer fix for this from Ford but I really don't want to spend another $100 deductable to have them possibly fix it.

Does anyone have any solutions for this?

Sometimes it sounds a lot like detonation but sometimes its lighter like worn lifters or something. I have heard that late model 5.0Ls wear out lifters quick. Is there any truth to this? Its possible that mine is pinging and tapping lifters. If it gets much worse I'm going to take it to Ford and push for a new engine :D

That would rock if ford would give us new engines but i seriously doubt that would happen. Maybe Mikke will have good news for us when he gets the service done. only bad thing is if it is a internal problem and they will fix it we have to go without the explorer for a couple days. what does it take for ford to replace a whole engine? That deal about reprogramming i read about somewhere didnt help mine. I took it in to get some work done a little while back and they reprogrammed my explorers computer and it still does it so in my case it didnt fix it. Major

5.0L engine is hydraulic roller cam, there is very little wear on the lifters if any.

This pinging is most likely a tip-in problem. Something that could be cured with a custom chip from Autologic.

the 94/95 mustang GT's suffer a similar problem, ford made some changes to the eec those years and I'm sure some of that programming carried over to the 5.0L explorers.

You might also try fuel injection cleaner. I tried some of the Valvoline cleaner that is $4 per bottle at Walmart because it was recommended by one of the employees who used it himself. You might also change the fuel filter. Often, when an engine is starved for gas it can knock too. rc
