View Full Version : Winches
RFR2212 03-26-2002, 02:16 AM Which winch do YOU HAVE on your truck. I don't want to hear, "well my friend this, or I heard that" ... What model winch are you running? Any complaints? I have a Ramsey Pro Plus 8000 but it took a shit on me this weekend. I've still yet to investigate the actual problem. The solinoid clicks, but I get nothing... So I'm gonna pull it apart sometime, but if it's a big time part that is shot, in comes a new winch... I'm looking for an 8000-9500lb winch. I'm looking to spend $500-800. I'd love to get a Warn HS9000i or a M8274-50 but they're outta the price range...
Thanks
Pete
mattadams 03-26-2002, 10:52 AM I've got the Warn XD9000.... totally impressed with it, it has never let me down yet... like many things, you pay a bit more for the warn, but you get the name, the reputation, and the warranty behind it.
Dannyboy 03-26-2002, 01:06 PM I have a warn m8000i that I picked up used from a guy along with the 4roller fairlead, a reciever winch mount and a front reciever designed for an S-10 for $300. I got a steal and it has dragged my truck out of the mud three times. It does work hard, but I dont have a snatch block to double it back.

GR899V8 04-10-2002, 07:10 PM I have a Warn 8000i that I can move from the front to the back with quick-disconnects, it has saved me many, many times. I bought the setup the week after a buddy and I slept in the snowy hills, exhausted from trying to use come-alongs to get us out.
madmike 04-11-2002, 07:29 AM I'm running the x8000i on the multi-carrier, have seen though in JC whitney they had the 9000 warn for like $799, shop around but I would stick with the warn.
Ray Lobato 04-11-2002, 11:11 AM I have a Ramsey Platinium Plus 9500. I haven't used it much, but when I have, it works great.

I know nothing about winches, switching from the front to tha back sounds awsome though, you gotta buy a kit like that separate or it comes as one thing?
Another question, do winches have there own battery's run by the trucks alternator or do they work off of the trucks battery?
madmike 05-08-2002, 08:26 PM the winch is seperate and the front carrier is seperate and the cradle is seperat and the quick disconnect is seperate , if you check jc whitney you can get the stuff alot cheaper than from warn, also when you buy the multimount it only comes with the front reciever, and carrier for the winch, here is a pict of mine.
I have the Ramsey Pro9000. It's always come through for me. Just used it the other day in fact :D

This situation makes another good case for electric over hydraulic winches. I was the only one with a winch and I was laying on my side. Now if I had a hydraulic winch I would have been screwed or I would have screwed up my engine by having to run it sideways in order to extract myself... Upside down would be even more fun
As for the battery question. You can run a single battery, the same one that powers your regular electrical system, or you can add an additional battery so you don't risk running down your main battery. That's what I do: http://www.explorer4x4.com/tips.htm

red96camaro 05-08-2002, 09:51 PM Thanks for the answers guys. This board is just too cool :-) When I ever pay off my bills next thing for me is a winch :-)
Gonzo 05-08-2002, 11:54 PM Can you side pull with the multi mount? Also, how do you mount winch on the 95+ with the stock bumper? I have seen a few of you guys on here with them, I think Ray Lobato has one. Is there a grille guard made for the Ex that will hold a winch?
