View Full Version : Erratic Performance, not urgent, but need advice
Jason_25 04-11-2002, 11:13 PM Ok guys since I got my 95 with 67K miles on it, it now has 93K.
Ever since I've had it, it has done 3 things.
1.Idles rough, not real rough, but enough to make me pissed
2.Every few times coming to a stop it idles down real low and almost cuts off (but never has)
3.Has erratic performance, sometimes it runs strong, sometimes it bogs down, it's so weird
4.Sometimes runs at a normal temp (i.e. halfway, t-stat open 1/3), sometimes runs sorta cool (i.e.1/3, t-stat open almost to the C)
Also, it seems to rev slowly, but maybe that's sorta normal
Things I have replaced so far:
!.Engine (hehe)
2.Both oxygen sensors
3.Cleaned MAF multiple times
4.Replaced TPS
5.Repalced IAC
6.Repalced Fuel filter
7.Ran lots of FI cleaner through it
8.Replaced Air Filter
I am so stumped, no matter what I do it never really changes.
If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be really grateful.
I also have:
2) occasionally engine = vroom, plat, plat, vroom, plat, plat, plat wants to cut off
3) but that is probably in my head
4) most of the time, I run very cool according to the gauge, replaced t'stat many times, same ol' thing
Any help would be great!
Robb

That's exactly what mine does!!
ToneDog 04-11-2002, 11:33 PM Hey fellas!
I thought I was the only one with irratic performance!
I have a '98 SOHC 37k and sometimes "she" just runs strong (also runs smoother and quieter) and sometimes she runs rough (louder, more motor vibration slugish)
If anyone finds anymore info on this I'd love to hear about it !
Thanks Guys

BoatsRcool 04-12-2002, 12:04 PM i have had the same problem with my 92' since last summer to! i have some of those things, and the MAF sensor... it still does it i hav
Lifted95X 04-12-2002, 12:07 PM 2.Every few times coming to a stop it idles down real low and almost cuts off (but never has)
Mine does this too...I want to know how to fix it also.
Jason_25 04-12-2002, 10:14 PM Ok really the only think I can think of is fuel injectors, does this seem like a reasonable conclusion?
BoatsRcool 04-12-2002, 11:48 PM thats what i have been told I should get flushed.. I think its like $80. can i get it done anywhere besides ford.. b/c i hate my dealership.
I know drippylube (jiffylube) does that sorta thing but i would never take my truck to one of those places. if i where to get a fuel system flush id take it to a mechanic and have them do it.
Jason_25 04-13-2002, 01:16 AM I think I will let Ford do it, but not without a talk to their service manager first.
BoatsRcool 04-13-2002, 11:12 AM ok well what do ya'll suggest I take it to... im at 15 year old... they think they can rip my ass off... the guy acted pissed when i came in one day, and ordered coil spacers, and i knew what i was talking about, i was like I have the prices too, and he was like they are NOT $14 they are $15 i was like well ok chill buddy.
TarHeel085 04-13-2002, 11:24 AM i love ford:hammer: i went to look at an FX4 and they wouldnt even give me the time of day! and the service guys think im an idiot and in actuality i prob know more than they do about me car. i cant stand it!:fire:
BoatsRcool 04-13-2002, 11:57 AM well ok, im gonna go to the dealership to get the flush. what do i say I want, etc. I dont want to look like a jackass..cuz they try hard to make me
Lifted95X 04-13-2002, 11:58 AM Let me know if this helps.
Jason_25 04-13-2002, 12:00 PM Just ask for a fuel system flush. I'm sure they'll know what you're talking about. Also, explain your problems in detail. Talk to the service manager if you have to.
TarHeel085 04-13-2002, 12:15 PM do you think the fuel system flush would help my hesitation?
Jason_25 04-13-2002, 12:18 PM Nope, when I had hesitation I had the plugs and wires changed and it instantly went away.
TarHeel085 04-13-2002, 12:33 PM plugs and wires huh? who did you have do it, prob yourself, and where did you get em?
Jason_25 04-13-2002, 12:38 PM Naw I don't mess with changing those spark plugs. For 20 bucks I can have the plugs and wires installed by the local auto repair place. I just got motorcraft platinumns and bosch wires I think.
Ross-N-Chicago 04-13-2002, 02:08 PM Different year but same problem with the hesitation and bogging down with erratic idle. I replaced with Jacobs wires and Motorcraft OEM platinums and she has never idled better. I really believe the better wires made the difference in conjunction with cleaning IAC, replacing TPS. Also ran a big can of throttle body cleaner through it.
