Just curious about which style of X we all have. What are good/bad qualities about the different styles. What model is best for off roading? Older or newer?

View Full Version : What year X do you have? ahhjaws 04-24-2002, 03:08 PM Just curious about which style of X we all have. What are good/bad qualities about the different styles. What model is best for off roading? Older or newer? 88vert 04-24-2002, 03:12 PM I have a 92 I like it becase it is easy to get parts for the only bad quality I can think of is the auto trannys ahhjaws 04-24-2002, 03:14 PM I agree. The only problem I have had with my '92 is the auto tranny. It works great for off-roading. 88vert 04-24-2002, 03:15 PM I have one of my ex's set up for off roading but the price to maintain is too high for me:eek: ChuckyD 04-24-2002, 03:35 PM I wish I had a newer X with a V8! 88vert 04-24-2002, 03:36 PM Sell that sweet 93 and buy one.:D ChuckyD 04-24-2002, 03:40 PM Not until I graduate College (Dec. 2003) But at that point, I think I will end up getting a newer Mustang, I miss the handling of a car! espnfreak 04-24-2002, 05:42 PM I wish I had a 96 v8 AWD, if i could get rid of my xlt i would get the LTD with a v8. Digger196 04-24-2002, 09:07 PM I have a 95 . love it. only thing bad is that i can't get a lift for it or i would have it on there. RoadEnforcer 04-24-2002, 09:22 PM 2001 sport... the best looking X yet TarHeel085 04-24-2002, 10:21 PM Originally posted by Digger196 I have a 95 expadition model. love it. only thing bad is that i can't get a lift for it or i would have it on there. hey your school is the punks that beat Leesville arent ya! you must die~~ :hammer: :p DarkMan 04-25-2002, 10:53 AM I'd have to say the best model for hard wheeling (if there is one) is the '94 with the towing package. You get a tranny cooler that will save your tranny. You get all the skid plates you need. Plus it's easy to get parts and mods. Dana 35 in front and Ford 8.8 in the rear; talk about easy to find parts! I think if I could start over, I'd get a sport with the 5-speed. I haven't had ANY problems with my tranny (even after 165,000 miles) but the shorter wheelbase and the lower maintenance tranny would give me more confidence. TwoToneX 04-25-2002, 01:09 PM '91, and it performs well. I like the look of it (even if it is a little boxy, just throw a pre-runner bumper on there), and it works just good enough :D I wish I had a 5.0, and I agree with RoadExplorer, I like the looks of those '01 Sports. '91-'94 Are the best for off-roading Everything else just looks better :D Jason_25 04-25-2002, 10:37 PM Originally posted by RoadEnforcer 2001 sport... the best looking X yet I agree. JeffMohr 04-25-2002, 10:52 PM I just got my 1991 xlt It runs like it was new My only problems were the sending unit inlet tube was rusted thru and the gas tank outer locking ring rusted (necessating a tank change) And of course the rear liftgate rusted thru around the bottom. Other than that I Love It!!! :) Dan Whitaker 04-26-2002, 12:10 AM I have a 97 Mountaineer with the 5.0 AWD. The only thing I wish ford would have done is put a two speed t-case behind the V8. I drove a couple of V6 Ex's and just did not like the lack of power. KodeBlu 04-27-2002, 04:25 PM '99 Limited here with all the toys...I love it! Mike_J 04-28-2002, 07:53 PM My 93' Explorer sport has been in the family since It left the Ford lot the first time. 200,000+ miles with only one $500.00 manual transmission repair to the list other than new tires, oil chages, cooling system maintainence, and other normal upkeep. At 200,000 miles it still looks and runs like brand new, except some minor interior scuffs (armwrest support broke, shifter knob loose, and liner under dashboard loose from screws). Not bad for an almost 10 year old truck. Digger196 04-28-2002, 07:58 PM thats right Jason. we beat Leesville. we beat most teams. State chaps! RoadEnforcer 04-28-2002, 09:44 PM dude who the hell are you talking to? Scott_91ExSprt 04-29-2002, 09:54 PM gotta 91 sport, my favorite body style because i like the mor trucky feel to it. its 2wd but holds its own with any 4x4 blazer around here and yes, that is a challenge.;) Digger196 04-29-2002, 10:06 PM RoadEnforcer, i was talking to Jason_25 for his comment above about my HS's team beating Leesville. read above to see what i'm talking about. RoadEnforcer 04-29-2002, 10:38 PM he only posted once in here and he didnt say a thing about your high school, all he said that he agreed with me on the the 2001 sport is the best looking X yet. diablo5969 05-07-2002, 11:04 AM Just to step in and mediate: Roadenforcer, the conversation was: Originally posted by Tarheel085 hey your school is the punks that beat Leesville arent ya! you must die~~ :hammer: :p Originally posted by Digger196 thats right Jason. we beat Leesville. we beat most teams. State chaps! Anyway, now that that's out of the way: I have a '94 XLT and I love it!!! :D leenjen 05-07-2002, 01:37 PM i have a 92 XLT. i havent had any problems with it. but maybe that's because i have a manual transmission. williecume 05-07-2002, 01:42 PM we bought our 97 xlt from my wifes friend for payoff and the only thing i will have to do is replace the motor. the head gasket started leaking outside the block (thankfully), so far none of the coolant is getting in the motor. but it still runs fine. my dad is going to help me build up the original motor once we switch them out. RoadEnforcer 05-07-2002, 10:20 PM Yeah, ya see that one went right over my head diablo5969 05-07-2002, 10:27 PM Oh well, we all do that sometimes RoadEnforcer 05-07-2002, 10:33 PM Sometimes? Man thats a usal for me... Hey being a lineman for Football and giving up my body in Hockey..... I get hit in the head a lot. Me no pick up many things.. diablo5969 05-07-2002, 11:14 PM :D joee12 05-21-2002, 02:02 PM I currently own a 2002 Sport Trac. Someone recently ran a red light and totalled my 1991 Explorer XL, which had 160,000 miles on the original engine with no major problems. drmoore71 05-25-2002, 01:41 AM i have a 2000 xlt 4x4 and my wife has a 1997 xlt 2wd. i also recently lost my 140,000 1995 xlt to a stupid driver. 03ExplorerSPT 05-26-2002, 01:17 AM I have a '03 Explorer Sport with about 300 miles with no problems. AQexplorer 06-04-2002, 04:56 PM ive got a 95 xlt, and the only thing i dont like about this generation of Xs is that you cant lift them much. and i bad thing about all Xs is that it seems like everyone has one!! RedBeard 06-04-2002, 08:22 PM Ditto what AQ said. I bought my 96 in April of 2002 for $4700. It needed tires, shocks, unstick/repair rear glass latch, and a DPFE sensor (CEL was on). So far I've cleaned it up, got a custom exhaust, ordered a K&N FIPK (to arrive tomorrow :D ), and cleaned the shit out of it. I'll keep this truck forever because as the engine and tranny eventually die, I'll be putting in a V-8 with a standard transmission, and getting a freaky suspension. -RB Bashman 06-05-2002, 07:36 AM I like my '93. The only problem with her is she's a ticker / pinger. But thanks to this site, I'm narrowing it down. :D Yahoo! She's ping free now! jme94xlt 06-12-2002, 12:03 AM i have a 94 xlt with 123k miles on it. i've had it for 3 years and i absolutely love it... no major problems, except the CEL is always on, and the ABS light comes on occasionally. i'm hopefully getting both of these problems fixed soon. i have done absolutely nothing to the truck yet, since i have no money (you know, poor college student without a summer job yet etc). eventually when the engine/tranny die i plan on a 5.0 swap, and a front/rear dana 60 swap with huge tires. gotta dream big. :D RichTek 06-12-2002, 04:15 PM 91' XLT with 160,000 mi. Runs great and can climb a tree like a squirrel. :D dejello 07-06-2002, 06:49 PM I have a '91 EB. First vehicle I've ever bought. It's given me a little hell and the A/C just went (DOH!), but I still love her. According to the sticker on the door, I was 9 when this thing was made. Wow.... Body Mechanic 07-17-2002, 06:23 PM Have to agree with roadenforcer, 2001 sport looks best. Jim F 07-23-2002, 11:41 AM You know, 1998's should be in a catagory by themselves since they have the front of a 95-97 but the back door is the new design used on 99-01's. Therefore, I did not vote. dwnthehatch 07-29-2002, 11:40 AM 98 44,700 miles with the usual blown radio display dgibson 07-30-2002, 09:09 AM 93x here, the only problems that I have had are replacing the tranny and the motor on the back of the transfer case. Other than those two problems, the x is great. I have had 4 different vehicles in the past 2 years and the x is my baby. 410Fortune 08-07-2002, 11:54 AM Hey how come 88 isnt listed in the Poll? I have an 88 Eddie Bauer and with 230K miles it's better now then it was the day it rolled off the assembly line Carl D. 08-13-2002, 04:38 PM 92 X Sport- Excellent vehicle and even better off road. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Ok well maybe for a ? 001Edge 09-04-2002, 05:02 PM i just got a 02 sporttrac last night Digger196 09-14-2002, 01:28 AM please limit your sig. to 6-7 lines ahhjaws 09-23-2002, 11:31 PM I guess one of the moderators should change 2002 to >2002 since we will probably be getting some 2003's around sometime. ChuckyD 10-19-2002, 11:33 AM done :D mweiss 11-05-2002, 09:06 PM I bought a '98 Explorer last December. It was just off of lease and looked like it had just rolled off the assembly line. My wife and I are very happy with it in general, but it has one glaring shortcoming and that's the stock headlights. Mine has the 4.0L standard OHV V-6. It's pretty good in traffic and 0-30MPH, but could use more oomph on the highway. I've replaced the factory radio with a Jensen AM-FM-CD/MP3 player and that's about the only customization I've done so far. Next are decent speakers and a subwoofer, in addition to a workable headlight upgrade. So far, this truck has been very reliable, comfortable and effortless to drive (in daylight). I use it for business, and I keep all my tools in it and often have to haul equipment belonging to clients from one radio tower site to another. The 4WD is indispensible at these sites, many of which are in the mountains and served by a muddy dirt trail that never gets plowed in winter. I would buy another one if Ford comes up with a much better headlight design. Sean1973 11-08-2002, 05:10 PM 95 Limited here and love it since 12/3/94 :) 120,000+ miles ,stock and not a single problem besides a few scratches here and there. Chew_12 04-30-2003, 01:51 AM lol two of the same threads going at once, thanks to me! matey 05-01-2003, 03:34 AM mines a 2000 model but i only found that out from being on here because i ordered it in 2000 and they had to send it to me from the states. i got it in march 2001 so i thought it was a 01 model but i looked at the plate and it was built in sept 2000 oh well i cant afford another one Klowns 05-01-2003, 05:39 AM 95 here, haven't had any problems at all with it, other than the ones i created. Thing had 110,000 before i started screwing around with it. Trouble free. FLYIN 5.0 05-01-2003, 05:53 AM 98 XLT 5.0 6" LIFT 2WD LOVE IT!! Limited Ex 05-05-2003, 09:35 PM 94 Limited 4x4, love it :D Has over 100k miles on it, not sure of the exact number because I never messed with my speedo gear. I have had it 4 years, and I got it the last week of my junior year in highschool. Only major problems have been: radiator cracked once, tranny problems 2 times (first time my fault, second time was the mechanics fault who fixed it the first time), a/c broke once (probably my fault), and just a few leaky gaskets which I am working on right now, and some slight ticking. And does anyone else just lay underneath and look around the underbody? I like my vehicle........ tomblin1 05-14-2003, 01:49 AM Rock On With The Classics!!! Lola has 164k and running strong Silver X 05-21-2003, 04:35 PM '01 Sport 4x4. Stock height and stock tires. Only had it off road twice, and it did suprisingly well. Didn't get stuck or stranded. VERY smooth ride compared to my 2000 XLT 5.0. Roomier. I don't think it's as capable off road as the earlier models. Not a whole lot of after market mods available yet Helwig Stabilizer kit Gibson cat back Exhaust FIPK (Aircharger) Shaved roof rack riding on 20's TRENZ grills and antenna OEM Ford clear corners (euro spec) here's a pic (edit: newer pic) http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_a/381000-381999/381350_14_full.jpg Silver X 06-09-2003, 04:40 PM Man, for some reason 20's just don't look that big on the new X's. IMO, they look too big on the older ones, but just about right on the latest model. I think its the huge wheel well openings. 92eddie4x4 06-15-2003, 01:11 AM I love the fact that there are soo many first gens. I think they are the best explorer still. SoBeLover 06-22-2003, 02:24 AM Well, actually we have two 1992 models. Mine is a Explorer Sport and my brother's is a 5-speed XLT. Both were bought with an insurance settlement resulting from an accident that totalled my brother's 1991 XLT, which he had only registered 4 days previous. I really loved that one, what a sweet machine :( But with the bad comes the good and two Explorers are ALWAYS better than one :D arieswebb 09-01-2003, 04:34 PM :exp: :bounce: 97 merc. 5.0 awd http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=415614&make_type_query=make%3DMercury&model_brand_query=model%3DMountaineer&tree=Mercury%20Mountaineer :exp: Alban61 09-02-2003, 05:02 PM 99 XLT 5.0L here. I've been lurking around and reading all the interesting stuff on this site. Thanks to you guys, I've cut my airbox and got a Magnaflow catback. Love the extra boost, and sound. Also because of reading threads here, I'll be installing Monroe Sensa-Trec Load Adjusting Shocks. Then it'll be the MAC intake....Apten Chip....umm, true dual exhaust. Well, it'll be probably next year or so before I do those. Just dreaming for now. :o bndrulez 09-22-2003, 06:09 AM 92 Navajo in the works. Explo01 09-23-2003, 06:28 PM I got a 2001 Sport. I love the 1st gen. The best for off roading and not a bad on road ride. The new ones were built for the highway. I believe it was 4 wheel & off road or four wheeler magazine that said the 2002 explorer was the worst 4X4 OEM offering they have ever tested followed closely by the chevy blazer. For this reason I will never own one. If I want a car I will buy a car. When I buy a 4X4 I want a 4X4 Skeets'91EB 10-29-2003, 06:23 PM 91 4x4 Eddie Bauer 4 door. Its still going strong 12 years later and its in great condition. As far as appearance, Im with Dewgod, Im a fan of the first gens. TRIGGER 11-21-2003, 07:23 PM 2004. Just picked up a Pueblo Gold XLS on Wednesday. My dealer called and offered to pay off the last 8 months of my 36 month lease on my 2002 XLS with no cash out of pocket and a $10/month increase for a new 36 month lease. I think that the 1st gens. are the most capable off road. My big problem with the newer ones is the independent suspension nonsense that kills the truck's off road performance. Another advantage to the 1st gens is the availibility of parts, (except for K&N, they dont make a cold air intake- we should start a petition and send it to them!!!!) The one thing about the 1st gens that some people may not like is the fact that, on the road, they ride worse than a jeep wrangler, (at least my 2 door does, hmmmm, that may have something to do with the 1500 lb overload springs.........) Being a 18 year old single male, I like the ride! 94WhiteEB 02-23-2004, 02:22 PM Seriously, I wonder why K&N doesn't make 1st Gens a CAI setup. Only bad aspects of a Gen1: Highway ride and V6 OHV. I would LOVE to put a 5.0 in it. general x 02-28-2004, 11:08 PM 4 door 92, hey my trans waits a few seconds like 4 before kromping on engagement. is that one of the 92's auto probs? (love my 92 anyway, everytime i see the rear interior of the newer ones i see how much i like mine more):D Skeets'91EB 02-29-2004, 01:19 AM If it really is 4 seconds, or you give it gas and the car goes nowhere, then you might need your tranny fixed. Before my tranny was rebuilt, it wouldnt engage and sometimes when stopped in traffic or at a light, when wanted to go again, the car wouldnt move, it'd just act like it was in neutral. thecause17 03-01-2004, 08:57 PM Bought my '97 Sport SOHC 2-door saturday. (look at the top tail light, and the licence plate mount, I'm sure there's more) '92Bauer 03-19-2004, 02:46 PM I love my 1992 EB 4X4, and i have to say i like the looks of the first gens over the rest. sor118 04-16-2004, 05:08 PM My 98 Limited kicks ass and loaded to the tits. It is black and looks pretty damn sharp. I just picked it up in Feb and it rides perfectly. The only weird thing is the air suspension which seems to turn on randomly and hard to tell if it is actually lifting or lowering. The system check says its O.K. though ??? Other than that, I love it. Ford_Racing_Guy 04-16-2004, 06:08 PM looks like i'm in the winning section 92' and it runs great, has 102,000 on it and i believe it is the stock tranny, it shifts good and everything i haven't decided how long i wanna keep it, but i'm a sucker for the 1st gens, i would like to get a 1st gen sport with the 5speed AussieExploder 06-02-2004, 07:00 PM 99 XL 5 speed, don't get much choice in Australia, XL Man, XLT auto only and limited auto only, all 4 doors and i don't think i have ever seen one older than a 96 model. Just finished swaping out the front for a dana 60 straight axle with lockers camaro_guy_z28 08-06-2004, 09:53 PM I have a 93 xlt 4x4 completely stock and I love it. I love the rough ride in the first gens better, the 95's and up just don't feel very truckish to me. I just recently drove a 2003 I think, Chevy trailblazer as a rental and let me tell u that was one sissy suv, that thing rode nicer than my brand new cavalier, I honestly believe that my explorer stock and all would destroy the trailblazer in any offroad situation, Just trying to compare vehicles, sorry for the rant. LDCExploder 08-19-2004, 07:46 AM 93 XLT- was what I could afford at the time.... wouldn't give it up for anything. raginraj 08-19-2004, 02:06 PM wow... i thought the 99-01 group would be doing a lot better. i see so many late model 2nd Gen X's around here i just kinda figured it would be the same elsewhere. looks like in other parts of the country people keep their X's just a little bit longer. rino351 10-03-2004, 09:58 AM We all know that '94 is the best year!! :p ExplorerSport77 11-13-2004, 09:40 PM 1999 here... joker_sf2099 12-14-2004, 05:12 PM I got the '99 Limited V8.
