View Full Version : What year X do you have?

Just curious about which style of X we all have. What are good/bad qualities about the different styles. What model is best for off roading? Older or newer?

04-24-2002, 03:12 PM
I have a 92 I like it becase it is easy to get parts for the only bad quality I can think of is the auto trannys

ahhjaws
04-24-2002, 03:14 PM
I agree. The only problem I have had with my '92 is the auto tranny. It works great for off-roading.

I have one of my ex's set up for off roading but the price to maintain is too high for me:eek:

But at that point, I think I will end up getting a newer Mustang, I miss the handling of a car!

I'd have to say the best model for hard wheeling (if there is one) is the '94 with the towing package. You get a tranny cooler that will save your tranny. You get all the skid plates you need. Plus it's easy to get parts and mods. Dana 35 in front and Ford 8.8 in the rear; talk about easy to find parts!

I think if I could start over, I'd get a sport with the 5-speed. I haven't had ANY problems with my tranny (even after 165,000 miles) but the shorter wheelbase and the lower maintenance tranny would give me more confidence.

'91, and it performs well. I like the look of it (even if it is a little boxy, just throw a pre-runner bumper on there), and it works just good enough :D

I wish I had a 5.0, and I agree with RoadExplorer, I like the looks of those '01 Sports.

'91-'94 Are the best for off-roading
Everything else just looks better :D

I just got my 1991 xlt
It runs like it was new
My only problems were the sending unit inlet tube was rusted thru and the gas tank outer locking ring rusted (necessating a tank change)

And of course the rear liftgate rusted thru around the bottom.

Other than that I Love It!!!

I have a 97 Mountaineer with the 5.0 AWD. The only thing I wish ford would have done is put a two speed t-case behind the V8. I drove a couple of V6 Ex's and just did not like the lack of power.

My 93' Explorer sport has been in the family since It left the Ford lot the first time. 200,000+ miles with only one $500.00 manual transmission repair to the list other than new tires, oil chages, cooling system maintainence, and other normal upkeep. At 200,000 miles it still looks and runs like brand new, except some minor interior scuffs (armwrest support broke, shifter knob loose, and liner under dashboard loose from screws). Not bad for an almost 10 year old truck.

we bought our 97 xlt from my wifes friend for payoff and the only thing i will have to do is replace the motor. the head gasket started leaking outside the block (thankfully), so far none of the coolant is getting in the motor. but it still runs fine. my dad is going to help me build up the original motor once we switch them out.

ive got a 95 xlt, and the only thing i dont like about this generation of Xs is that you cant lift them much.

and i bad thing about all Xs is that it seems like everyone has one!!

RedBeard
06-04-2002, 08:22 PM
Ditto what AQ said. I bought my 96 in April of 2002 for $4700. It needed tires, shocks, unstick/repair rear glass latch, and a DPFE sensor (CEL was on).

So far I've cleaned it up, got a custom exhaust, ordered a K&N FIPK (to arrive tomorrow :D ), and cleaned the shit out of it.

I'll keep this truck forever because as the engine and tranny eventually die, I'll be putting in a V-8 with a standard transmission, and getting a freaky suspension.

i have a 94 xlt with 123k miles on it. i've had it for 3 years and i absolutely love it... no major problems, except the CEL is always on, and the ABS light comes on occasionally. i'm hopefully getting both of these problems fixed soon.

i have done absolutely nothing to the truck yet, since i have no money (you know, poor college student without a summer job yet etc). eventually when the engine/tranny die i plan on a 5.0 swap, and a front/rear dana 60 swap with huge tires. gotta dream big. :D

I bought a '98 Explorer last December. It was just off of lease and looked like it had just rolled off the assembly line. My wife and I are very happy with it in general, but it has one glaring shortcoming and that's the stock headlights.
Mine has the 4.0L standard OHV V-6. It's pretty good in traffic and 0-30MPH, but could use more oomph on the highway.
I've replaced the factory radio with a Jensen AM-FM-CD/MP3 player and that's about the only customization I've done so far. Next are decent speakers and a subwoofer, in addition to a workable headlight upgrade.
So far, this truck has been very reliable, comfortable and effortless to drive (in daylight).
I use it for business, and I keep all my tools in it and often have to haul equipment belonging to clients from one radio tower site to another. The 4WD is indispensible at these sites, many of which are in the mountains and served by a muddy dirt trail that never gets plowed in winter.
I would buy another one if Ford comes up with a much better headlight design.

94 Limited 4x4, love it :D
Has over 100k miles on it, not sure of the exact number because I never messed with my speedo gear. I have had it 4 years, and I got it the last week of my junior year in highschool. Only major problems have been: radiator cracked once, tranny problems 2 times (first time my fault, second time was the mechanics fault who fixed it the first time), a/c broke once (probably my fault), and just a few leaky gaskets which I am working on right now, and some slight ticking. And does anyone else just lay underneath and look around the underbody? I like my vehicle........

offroad vintage models are best. on road the newest models are the best. sophmore models look best to me.

i love them all. even the new ones. never offroad of course but riding in a rental one and in my aunt glenda's the 2002-2003 rides like a Lincoln Towncar. smooth and roomy. still heavy as hell but with 4.6 v8 it is very capable.

even when my 95 was stock it felt so capable offroad. now it certainly is (when its running:D )

Best for on road driving IMHO. VERY smooth ride compared to my 2000 XLT 5.0. Roomier. I don't think it's as capable off road as the earlier models.
Not a whole lot of after market mods available yet

Well, actually we have two 1992 models. Mine is a Explorer Sport and my brother's is a 5-speed XLT. Both were bought with an insurance settlement resulting from an accident that totalled my brother's 1991 XLT, which he had only registered 4 days previous. I really loved that one, what a sweet machine :(

99 XLT 5.0L here. Bought it used, 1 year ago. Has 42K miles on it now. Love it!! Had a '94 XLT before, but wanted more ooomph for towing camper. I've been lurking around and reading all the interesting stuff on this site. Thanks to you guys, I've cut my airbox and got a Magnaflow catback. Love the extra boost, and sound. Also because of reading threads here, I'll be installing Monroe Sensa-Trec Load Adjusting Shocks. Then it'll be the MAC intake....Apten Chip....umm, true dual exhaust. the 32's are labled as 265/75 on the stock 16" rims...they aren't wide like actual 32x12.50's so they don't rub that much...only a little...plus had to do some minor fender trimming to fit them comfortably...

I believe it was 4 wheel & off road or four wheeler magazine that said the 2002 explorer was the worst 4X4 OEM offering they have ever tested followed closely by the chevy blazer. For this reason I will never own one. If I want a car I will buy a car. When I buy a 4X4 I want a 4X4

I love my 92 sport 5-speed. I think that the 1st gens. are the most capable off road. My big problem with the newer ones is the independent suspension nonsense that kills the truck's off road performance.

Another advantage to the 1st gens is the availibility of parts, (except for K&N, they dont make a cold air intake- we should start a petition and send it to them!!!!)

The one thing about the 1st gens that some people may not like is the fact that, on the road, they ride worse than a jeep wrangler, (at least my 2 door does, hmmmm, that may have something to do with the 1500 lb overload springs.........) Being a 18 year old single male, I like the ride!

94WhiteEB
02-23-2004, 02:22 PM
Seriously, I wonder why K&N doesn't make 1st Gens a CAI setup. Only bad aspects of a Gen1: Highway ride and V6 OHV. I would LOVE to put a 5.0 in it.

4 door 92, hey my trans waits a few seconds like 4 before kromping on engagement. is that one of the 92's auto probs? (love my 92 anyway, everytime i see the rear interior of the newer ones i see how much i like mine more):D

Skeets'91EB
02-29-2004, 01:19 AM
If it really is 4 seconds, or you give it gas and the car goes nowhere, then you might need your tranny fixed. Before my tranny was rebuilt, it wouldnt engage and sometimes when stopped in traffic or at a light, when wanted to go again, the car wouldnt move, it'd just act like it was in neutral.

My 98 Limited kicks ass and loaded to the tits. It is black and looks pretty damn sharp. I just picked it up in Feb and it rides perfectly. The only weird thing is the air suspension which seems to turn on randomly and hard to tell if it is actually lifting or lowering. The system check says its O.K. though ??? Other than that, I love it.

i haven't decided how long i wanna keep it, but i'm a sucker for the 1st gens, i would like to get a 1st gen sport with the 5speed

99 XL 5 speed, don't get much choice in Australia, XL Man, XLT auto only and limited auto only, all 4 doors and i don't think i have ever seen one older than a 96 model.

Mine is a 1998 SOHC UK spec, only had it for a couple of months and no probs yet.
It's got to be the most comfortable and well equiped car I've driven shame no clock, the locals have cristened it the Yank Tank and I do get some funny looks as there are not that many on the streets of London or the rest of the UK.

I have a 2003 XLT with the 4.6 and absolutely love it. Especially since I got my exhaust. A Flowmaster 40 with a 3" chrome tip that is about a foot long.

1995 explorer expedition 4x4 starting an engine swap on my return from iraq. pulling the 6 out and dropping a 460 with manual tranny and transfer. Just finished swaping out the front for a dana 60 straight axle with lockers

I have a 93 xlt 4x4 completely stock and I love it. I love the rough ride in the first gens better, the 95's and up just don't feel very truckish to me. I just recently drove a 2003 I think, Chevy trailblazer as a rental and let me tell u that was one sissy suv, that thing rode nicer than my brand new cavalier, I honestly believe that my explorer stock and all would destroy the trailblazer in any offroad situation, Just trying to compare vehicles, sorry for the rant.

wow... i thought the 99-01 group would be doing a lot better. i see so many late model 2nd Gen X's around here i just kinda figured it would be the same elsewhere. looks like in other parts of the country people keep their X's just a little bit longer.
