I would inspect the filaments to make sure they are intact. Then clean them with Fuel Body Cleaner. Next, check all electrical connections to the MAF sensor. Look for any corroded or damaged connections. After that, reset the computer (remove negative battery terminal for over 15-20 mins.) Drive normally for a good 20 minutes so the computer can re-learn and see if the CEL comes back on.

well i just cleaned the MAF about a week ago and reset the computer for a looooong time. by the way.....my check engine light never came on during driving. i just thought i would run it for the hell of it hoping i would come up with a code and here i am.

how do you run tests for codes?

what kind of bad gas mileage were you getting?

Use an OBD I scanner.

Depends on the model scanner,

Any decent mechanic should have one.

Take a look at http://www.autocheckup.com/Default2.htm

since we first gen. X's have OBD-I, we dont have all those cool features of OBD-II. but you dont even need to buy a scanner. you can take a piece of wire and place it in 2 certain connectors on the EEC test plug and watch your check engine light declare your troubles to you in flashing lights. acutally go here! http://www.homestead.com/therangerstation/OBD_I.html

it will tell you everything you need to do. im still getting 10mpg b/c i havnt replaced or investigated this problem anymore. i will do it tomrrow and see whats up.

I'm not sure if ODB-I stores codes like OBD-II, but if the CEL was not on, then that was an old code. If you reset the computer, drive for a half hour and scan for codes again, you should see none.

As for low MPG, I've systematically gone through some stuff to raise my MPG... things like cleaning the MAF sensor, cleaning the throttle body, cleaning fuel injectors, installing a K&N FIPK, exhaust.... Checking spark plug gaps is a must, and I've also heard of fuel pumps running full nuts, thereby wasting gas.
