View Full Version : Keypad Code-HELP
rockwelloh 06-12-2002, 09:56 PM Bought a used 2001 Explorer Sport and do not have key code. I have read previous posts to locate computer module but can not locate it in the jack compartment
Am I not looking hard enough or is located elsewhere on a 2001?
Can anyone give me a detailed location?
aldive 06-12-2002, 09:58 PM On my 99 it is in the jack compartment but way to the front; use a flashlight and good luck.
BT4auBURN 06-12-2002, 10:03 PM screw the key code! All it is is a theft hazard. I found out from some 8th grader how easy it is to break into my X with that stupid key pad. I tried it. And was able to unlock it on the first try. Im bout to be buying a new alarm. However if you still want to know then youre looking in the right place. Look for a 5 digit code facing the jack. Its pretty far back though
is there one generic code or something BT4auBURN?
aldive 06-12-2002, 10:12 PM Thye factory set code is in the jack compartment, I doubt that this is a "universal" code.
Yeah, I know about the factory set code... I had to use that when I bought mine. Thats pretty bad that people can find a way to manipulate these things to open for them tho.
Hartman 06-12-2002, 11:16 PM Another flaw of the keypad is that all you have to do to get the dome lights to come on is press one button. This allows could-be theives to see what's inside.

So does a simple flashlight.
Hartman 06-13-2002, 11:16 AM Yeah, but with my tint it will be harder to shine a flashlight thru the glass from the outside that the domelight eluminating the interior from the inside.

AQexplorer 06-13-2002, 11:50 AM lol, ive probably tried 100 times to get mine to work doing things like that, but it wont....i guess ive actually got an electrical problem with mine, cuz it just stopped working about 2 years ago while my dad was driving it.
Hartman 06-13-2002, 11:59 AM While we're on the subject, does anybody know how to get the plastic trim piece off, I want to paint it.
AQexplorer 06-13-2002, 12:05 PM where exactly is the code, i couldnt find it

If you start at the number 1. and press on it then rub your fingers all the way down the key pad and back up a few times. (maybe 10) then it will unlock the doors. Mine worked after going up and down the keypad 3 times. And my code is pretty far apart. These were 8th graders that taught me this! If our "security systems" cant keep an eight grader out then thats pretty crappy!
Maybe that is because your personal code is set at "1-3-5-7-9"? Mine isn't quite so obvious and this procedure did nothing but make my fingers raw.
BT4auBURN 06-13-2002, 12:15 PM I would hope the Ford people weren't that stupid to make a code 13579. I know my code and I dont see how it would work but I did it and it worked.
AQexplorer: Take off the plastic piece where the jack is. Look in there towards the front of the truck. There will be a black or grey module in there with wires coming out and there is a sticker on it that has a series of 5 numbers on it. That is your factory code. You will need a flash light an maybe a small mirror.

Thats wjen they use a brick.....
Hartman 06-13-2002, 06:57 PM A brick? OK?
m6500 06-13-2002, 07:55 PM If they want it they will get it, as for me, i love the access it gives me without the key.
AQexplorer 06-13-2002, 09:12 PM ok, i got the number, and it doesnt work...so i guess my problem is wiring somewhere, it just quit workin one day about 2 years ago while my dad was driving it.
who knows, i guess ill have to take it to the ford shop and get them to figure it out.
NO!!! That will cost you a couple hundred and cause 10 more problems. I say just live without it.
dazsherm 06-14-2002, 09:46 AM when i bought my x.... the salesman came outside and told me to pick a 5digit number.... and he reprogrammed teh keypad with what i wanted.... dk how he did it, but its possible

Look in the manual...it tells you how to reprogram the code to one that you choose, but you'll still have the factory code as well. Like I reprogrammed to my birthdate so it's easier to remember, but I never use the damn thing. Mine's a '97, if that makes any difference.

rockwelloh 06-16-2002, 10:45 PM Looked and used a mirror. All i see is the side speaker, beyond that maybe a black box but no sticker on it. It is so far forward, almost to the driver door.
What a pain in the ***@@@!!!
Not THAT important. Guess I'll live without it!
Thanks for all the help!
Crankcase 06-16-2002, 10:56 PM I thought if you give Ford your V.I.N. number, they can give you the code for it.
ahhh... a 2001 sport might be a whole different ballgame. Call ford and ask them where to find it.
gijoecam 06-17-2002, 04:26 PM It sounds like the personal code is 13579 or 97531. All you have to do to erase it is follow the instructions in the owner's manual to erase the user-code. A lot of rental car companies use that trick on their fleet vehicles... the first thing they do after taking deliveries is program an alternate code (like 13579) so that if someone locks their keys in the car, it's easy to retrieve them.
As for the location of the factory code, I know on my 98, it's right up inside the jack compartment. It takes a flashlight and a mirrir to be able to see around the corner, but it's there.
As for finding out the code without the sticker, from what I understand, you must connect it to the computer at the dealer and scan the system. The Code is not vin-specific (i.e. the unit can be changed out).
Just my .02

If youre talking about my code, I know my code and it isn't even close to a 13579 or97531 or whatever. My code is well spread out.
gijoecam 06-18-2002, 05:16 PM it's possible that your master code is 3-1-3-5-7, or 5-7-9-9-7... running your finger back and forth over the key pad is like running your fingers over a keyboard... eventually, you might find a user whose password is 'qwerty'... it's not impossible.
If, in fact, it is 1-3-5-7-9 or something similar, it's entirely possible (as I stated before) that someone programmed in an alternate code at one time and it was never erased. In fact, I've programmed that exact code in mine when I go camping just to not need to carry the keys around for the weekend. Of course, I promptly erase it so I don't have to worry about it getting cracked by a 5-year old who likes to push the buttons!
Take the time to erase all the user codes first, then try it and see it 'zipping' the keys still works.
-Joe-
How do you erase user codes?
mikem74 06-18-2002, 07:02 PM BT4auBURN...can you elaborate on how a kid could break in your X with the keypad? My code seems to be unique enough that it would not be easy to "guess" and after a few failed guesses the keypad will not work at all.
BT4auBURN 06-18-2002, 08:21 PM :frustrate
jonny 5 06-18-2002, 08:31 PM Factory code CANNOT be erased and will always be there. To set the personal code, enter the factory code, press one immediately after and enter a five digit code. That five digit code is now your personal code and CAN be reproggrammed, yet the factory code WILL still work.
Hope this helps someone or else it was a waste of my time. hehe
BT4auBURN: no need to repost it. Robert quoted you so its already here. I tried that method on my keypad and it didnt work.
gijoecam 06-18-2002, 09:20 PM Had to try it... tired the ex, tried my f150, tried my mom's Expedition, and tried my dad's Lightning... didn't work on any of them.
I dunno.... fluke?

BT4auBURN 06-18-2002, 10:07 PM I have unlocked my cousin's 97 and a lady at work's 96.
They are all three XLT's. (if that matters)
how many times did you go up and down? I did it a few times really fast and got nothing.
BT4auBURN 06-19-2002, 06:12 AM The first time like 20 Later about 50 times. sounds like alot but it isn't when youre doing it quickly.
o ill have to try that then.
Blake D 06-19-2002, 12:05 PM Can you add these to a vehicle without a code? Like one from a junk yard add to my XLT?
you mean take one off a junker and put it on your X that has never had one? I doubt it. That would require cutting holes in your door and running wires all over. And I'm not sure your computer would work with it unless this is a totally separate system.
