View Full Version : Help me stop the squeeking!
EliteConcept 06-13-2002, 11:03 AM hey there ladies and germs
not sure if this is really a problem but lately i've noticed that only when i turn to the right, i get a light squeeking sound from my front driver side wheel.....maybe passenger side squeeeks to but i never sit on that side to noctice.
anything i should check or fix or whatnot?
also a totally seperate matter..
my brakes squeek really bad when i apply them lightly...
The brake pads are fine my dads friend checked them out....is there any thing i can use to stop this sqeeking from going on?
it runs fine! boy runs like its only a few years old instead of 10. *knock on wood*
thanks~
88vert 06-13-2002, 11:05 AM Maybe grease your balljoints?:D
EliteConcept 06-13-2002, 11:15 AM hmmm i see
it would help even more if i knew what ball joints where...
what kinda grease just the black grease?
88vert 06-13-2002, 11:22 AM Have you ever had the balljoints replaced? If not you can not grease them becase they come from the factory non-greaseable,and they could be sqeaking from a lack of grease:(
EliteConcept 06-13-2002, 11:24 AM i've never replaced them, it seems like a costly expense.
i can't grease the balljoints if they are stock?
88vert 06-13-2002, 11:33 AM Stock ones you cannot grease. They are costly at a shop but if you can live with it and they are not shot yet I would not mess with them:D
EliteConcept 06-13-2002, 11:40 AM if they do become bad,
how will i know
is it really really bad to drive if they are bad?
88vert 06-13-2002, 11:44 AM When they become bad you will feel it when you go over bumps in the road, just trust me you will know.I drove on a bad lower for 6 months it did not hurt anything, could mess up your alighnment:(
EliteConcept 06-13-2002, 12:02 PM ah that sucks
i think i read that the ones on explorers tend to not last very long either
88vert 06-13-2002, 12:24 PM Is your ex lifted?
EliteConcept 06-14-2002, 12:38 AM nope she sits at the stock height
88vert 06-14-2002, 12:43 AM ball joints last alot longer when you stay stock height and regular greasing:D
EliteConcept 06-14-2002, 02:10 AM but if i'm at stock height with stock ball joints i can't grease them..
Mbrooks420 06-14-2002, 08:25 AM Your ball joint would have to be REALLY bad to have it totally fail. I had the drivers side replaced, and I think it was about $350 for labor and parts. Mine was a warranty deal so the price was prob. inflated. :D
88vert 06-14-2002, 09:44 AM You can try spraying some wd-40 or some kind of spray lube on them for a temperary fix to stop them from sqeaking. But if your ball joints are stock I can almost guarantee they are dry:(
Rhett 06-14-2002, 02:56 PM WD-40 can be used, but it will wash away the first time you drive in the rain or go thru a creek. Better to use some lithium grease because its pretty resistant to water (i.e. marine). I dont think spraying the ball joints will help just all that much tho...the grease may not get in there where it needs to be..
BTW if the ball joints are bad, one thing that you might notice is that your truck will vibrate around more especially above 40 mph. If they get really bad I would replace them. If you take it to a shop it will probably be a lot of $ because you have to disassemble a lot of stuff on the front end to replace them. Also if it were me I would have upper and lower ball joints replaced on both sides at the same time, that way you won't have 1 side with new ball joints and the other with old...
1991XLT 06-14-2002, 03:44 PM I just replaced all of mine on my 91 and for all the parts
2 upper ball joints
2 lower ball joints
3 drive axle joints
4 drive shaft joints
1 brake rotor
4 wheel bearings
1 set of premium brake pads
note: all of these parts are not needed to replace just ball joints.. but I figured while I had it apart I might as well replace em.. also this is for 1991-1994 so 95 and newer would be different
all of these parts costed me 350 dollars and labor was nothing as I did the work myself..
